E39 530i Automatic Transmission Filter and gasket

Recommended Posts

Hi guys. I'm just wondering if anyone had done the automatic transmission filter/gasket change before on e39 and what would you recommend to get? I've ordered one (wrong one...) but had to return as my transmission is ZF not GM. And the supplier did not check properly. Any suggestion or advice much appreciated!

Hi Eagle. Thank you very much.

Sorry to be pain but what is FCP?

Also I'm finding a lot of suppliers sell paper-ish style gasket. Is that normal for e39 automatic transmission or is there any silicon/rubber/stainless steel like type of gasket somewhere out there?

Give me a call, O3 4555133, business hours

E39 is a 5HP19 so gasket and filter is less than $170

The gasket works fine. I use a light coat of RTV to keep it attached to the pan when installing so it doesn't move

Yeah but what brand is it?. I can get cheap ones thru work also but there is no way id risk using one for a job like this. $100 is cheap insurance.

I have used them for several years in my own car and my wifes.

If you are paying $170 for a supposed "ZF" part or some other brand name part then someone is making a bloody good profit because I can buy ZF branded ones for substantially less than that here in NZ.

Please enlighten me as to what your experience and knowledge of Auto transmissions is??

Also where do you work, would like to know so I avoid buying anything from there if they sell low quality cheap parts.

Still haven't said who makes it so why would anyone take your word and buy a unknown product just because its a little cheaper?. Its common knowledge some aftermarket filters have qaulity issues. If you actually viewed the link you would see that it is a filter kit with a known quality gaskets and new plugs, the filter itself is $50 NZD (it you can get it for that then awesome)

I don't sell parts i fit them for a living. We buy all sorts of parts off known reputable companies with actual warranties and not random internet shills.

You should really find out who you are calling a "shill" before you do so.

I've been rebuilding transmissions for over 30 years and only do quality work with warranties, and the price I gave was my cost but I can sell a genuine ZF pan gasket and filter to you for $170 complete with both drain and refill plugs, I'll even pay the freight.

With your claimed use of RTV for transmission gaskets I wouldn't even hire you, and you come across as a person who knows everything and can't be taught anything.

But who am I to try and correct a keyboard warrior and self proclaimed expert like you.

Self proclaimed expert here is clearly yourself. Ive never claimed to be expert so you are just making assumptions about me over the internet. Ive been  been ordering and fitting solely BMW parts for over a decade, so of course I'm going to question when some random business tries to sell some unknown offering with zero info and blind trust.

If 30 years of experience means you can't answer a simple question without getting offended then that's on you.

You are the one that called me a "shill' without even knowing who I am. Yes I am an expert in diagnosing, repairing and rebuilding transmissions so what is your point?? Or are you inferring that I'm not??

Prior to becoming a transmission specialist I worked for a BMW dealership, which doesn't mean I know everything but obviously with almost 40 years in the Auto Industry I have more experience than your "over a decade".

I've actually owned BMW's longer than you say you have been "fitting solely BMW" parts

You are not the person who was wanting a pan gasket and filter, Arata was, and you had to jump in and start "confronting" me when it obviously had nothing to do with you, obviously you lack civility and humility and come across as a bit of a bully.

I asked you to please enlighten me as to what your experience and knowledge of Auto transmissions is, you didn't answer the question???

You expect answers about items you have no intention of buying yet can't answer questions yourself, and instead attack the other person. Speaks volumes about you.

I asked a simple question which you interpreted it as hostile and offensive, it really wasn't, maybe its you being a newbie here or reading it wrong that gave that impressions but that the internet for you sometimes. You questioning where i work and my skills was you insult to me tbh. You know could of handled it better also.

Im quite sure ive never questioned anyone on this forums skills. All information ive posted is for the most part my own experiences. You may well of had good intentions by offering but your post came across as shilling to me , your presence on this forums is basically none, no one to my knowledge has vouched for you and you provided little information that left it open to interpenetration. I gave a known recommendation from the very trusted source and you discounted it while putting forward your offering. I don't you

I admit i was probably a bit ott on the shill call but I don't work on blind trust\information and always question anyone unknown offering anything, that''s just how i operate. When people pull the patronizing card when questioned by someone with less perceived knowledge over simple things then i lose respect for them.

As to your question - Ive already answered that above but that there are plenty of areas that are simple enough in this world that you don't need decades to knowledge to grasp or make the safer call.

I honestly hope the OP buys the ZF kit for less than $170 that should of been offered at the start so everyone can win.

Hi. Kiwi_BMW.

Thank you for info. I need to know what brand it is. I had looked on tons of website and obviously there are cheap ones and expensive ones. I'm trying to find the ones that is at reasonable price and reasonable quality. Unfortuantely 3 places I've ordered from were all poor quality I've spent between $30 ~ $100 and one of them came in ripped gasket which I was very frustrated. So at the moment I'm after for greater quality. $50 does not quite music to my ears. Again thank you for your info much appreciated but I have to say pass on that one.
