Hang On, New NZ Speed Restrictions!!!

Recommended Posts

fully agree, @Herbmiester.  Mine listens on the band they're broadcasting on, alerts me of revenue gathering and prompts me to check my speed.  My preference is to concentrate on the traffic and road conditions around me as my active contribution to road safety, rather than constantly checking my speedo and using the brake for compliance correction.

This just emphasis's the need for a Radar Detector, not so I can do 130kph but so I dont get an unnecessary ticket for doing 106kph when traffic is flowing smoothly or I am on a clear road in perfect driving conditions. Mine has save me form this fate on so many occasions now it has paid for itself many times over.

This.

I've never been big on radar detectors but the first time I get a ticket for <5km/h I'm going to get one.

recommendations please, has the technology changed?

Id be interested to see crash data with tire info - some of my mates freak when they are passengers with me not because I speed but because I take a 65 corner at 90 or 100 if I know it.

I didnt really understand the issue for years as I had always bought pilot sport or similar max performance tires (PS4S in the c63 now), then I drove a mates shitter 1996 civic to diagnose a noise and got loose on the first roundabout I came across, land sail or some such hilarious brand tires. 14x165 and $60 bucks each apparently. They weren't tires those were ice skates and apparently they sell in droves.

The stopping distance from premium and even mid range tires to ultra budget are huge, one comparison I saw was 62m for PS4S , 70-80 for mid range tires and 103m for some popular cheapshit tire.

Two things I never skimp on - tires and toilet paper, im sure theres a skid joke in there somewhere.

Just fixed 3 cars at work last week for a local panel beater here, a E87, Evo4 and Sirion. All 3 had taken a hit to the front left requiring replacement steering racks, knuckles and bearing to be fitted (for insurance). Naturally all sporting some sort of Chinese flavour of the month, but crashing ain't enough to stop people buying on price it seems.

Shityres as well as old should be banned or just for “competition use”

See it alot on High performance cars “New tyres” in the forsale ad seems to hold as much value as “timing chain no cambelt”. Or cambelt changed but not the wp, idlers, etc ?‍♂️?‍♂️

I recently put a set of 33" ATs on my 100 Series Land Cruiser.

Was gonna go with Kumho at around $360 each but read several owners reviews of them being sketchy in the wet. That coupled with the price put me off.

Went with Goodride SL369 AT at $190 each and no complaints. Currently commuting up and down SH39 in the Waikato which is pretty slippery in the wet thanks to tar bleed and I haven't had any moments. Good ride quality and quiet as well.

Surprised tyres on the market here don't have to adhere to some standard or regulation that vehicles have to.

I'm still using the BELtronics version of the Escort Redline.  There are newer detectors, though not with the extreme range sensitivity.  Newer detectors have location muting and online connectivity features... someone with the latest gear will be along soon, no doubt.

I thought Snow tyres don't pass a WOF now.  And if that is the case they should not be passing compliance.
In Canada and no doubt some northern US states you can get a fine for running tyres outside of the season they were made for.

Bad Tyres, Bad Roads, Bad Drivers.  And it is only getting worse as people hold onto their poorly maintained econoshitters for longer and longer.

Snow tyres still pass a wof if the tread depth is more than 4mm. They should be banned or "off-road only" as there is no reason for a road car to need them in NZ, yet I can walk passed the local 2shitcars dealer and spot a bunch with snow tyres.

That's crazy.  Their performance is so poor outside of cold weather.  I didn't trust them at all in DC when it wasn't snowing.  In Quebec they were amazing though.

I could count the number of accidents which involved excessive speed or speed not appropriate for the conditions on one hand with most fingers amputated.

Note there is a significant difference between speed not appropriate for the conditions and speed not appropriate for the condition the vehicle and capability of the  operator -   the police do not draw the distinction as it would wreck their argument about speed.

This is the sort of thing the "speed kills" advocates just don't get.

Driving faster than an arbitrarily posted speed limit, especially the 100km limit, is not necessarily dangerous. However, doing so will now get you stopped and fined.

Driving at a speed higher than appropriate for the conditions yet lower than the posted speed limit attracts no attention of recrimination, but is significantly more likely to cause an accident than simply exceeding a speed limit.

@3pedals attended crashes. I didn't do much of that, but did work with the TRL in the UK for quite a while. The reports we provided were often ignored, or presented (with exclusions) in a way to meet whatever criteria were required. Typically that criteria was about a war on speed.

I was going to buy a radar earlier in the year but with this new update decided enough was enough. At least it's something anyway, went for the Escort Redline EX, seems to be pretty nice, GPS locations of fix cameras is a nice touch, as is the long open road range. Probably one of the better value for money units out there.
