My NewToy 635CSi

Recommended Posts

Had the opportunity to purchase this, 1986, two previous owners. It is very original and complete and I am very pleased with it.

Fantastic looking car - assuming a ‘who you know’ sale?

Have not seen one of these up for sale for a while.

An off-market transaction, you might say.

That is gorgeous, especially in that color. Any interior shots?

Not a garage find as such.

I will get some more photos when the whole family is home.

Ah, was wondering if it might have been the one Barry pulled out of a garage in Wellington a yearish ago. There was a Dixi article on it and the restoration he was doing.

Nice car, hope to see it in the metal at a club meet someday.

Would that be in Arctic blau? Lovely colour.

Yes, Artic blau.  It is a much lighter colour than some of the photos show but looks great in the flesh.

And yes, I will bring to a club meet soon.

Me too.  For some reason they seem to be a love or hate style. I have grown to love them.

Very popular colour in their day. The other colour which was similar but darker was royal blue. Arctic was more metallic.

Seen a few M635csi's in that colour too. Beautiful. Nice to see well preserved sharks today. They were my first love.  I was smitten as a teenager, and vowed to get one - one of the prettiest designs BMW ever penned in my opinion.

so, have been using the car a bit.  Up to Manfeild, where it met its sister, an E28 in the same Artic Blue Colour

And just last Friday a trip to Castle Point with a group of enthusiasts, was a great day with sunshine and some fabulous roads.

Image preview

But sadly, the car has started using water - lots of water, and there is a film of oil in there too. I did not mean this car to become a project, but looks like that is the way it is heading.  I thought the stories of M30 engines running to 500km were urban myth, and this just proves it.  This engine has only done 486,000km! Even if it is just a head gasket, starting anything on this engine would likely result in a full rebuild being required.  Probably not an economic proposition.

Still have my de Joux to finish so that will have to take priority at the moment.

Can't see the bottom end needing any work if its not using oil besides a possible oil pump refresh. Still could see the honing marks on my 450,000 and 550,000 M30B35 when i did the headgaskets.

Hmmm, interesting.  I guess we will see when the head comes off.

So, it has been a while since I posted on this thread.  Took the head off, found gasket had blown between 5 & 6. Head components were worn beyond reasonably re using. Looked at various options (including buying a parts car - but that is another story...)and decided to keep this car original and to rebuild the cylinder head.  Big thanks to Jon at Begley Motor Works who has completed the rebuild - new valves, guides, rockers, camshaft, seals etc - virtually anything that moved was replaced.  Bottom end seems to be all good, as Jared suggested.

Car is now back and running sweetly, and hopefully I will take it to the BMW Nationals in a week or so.

Meanwhile, I have purchased the parts car, only to find it is too good to wreck, so another unexpected restoration project about to begin.
