I'm no expert but I had the same problem recently - putting the car into reverse would stall it 60% of the time and also just waiting at the lights the lights would cause the idle to fluctuate resulting in a stall (embarrassing!). I fixed the problem by taking out the ICV and giving it a really good clean, as well as cleaning out the hoses and connections to it. My stalling problem is gone and the car runs great now...

It is one of the larger hoses - not the one which connects to the top of the radiator, not the one which connects to the bottom of the radiator, but the other one. Thanks for the replies. Not fixed yet - waiting on the oil pressure switch to arrive before they can start it up again. Fingers crossed though!

So I've never had any issue with my car and oil (1988 320i manual) since I've owned it. It gets regularly serviced and never seems to burn any oil. Anyway, I got the WOF without problems on Friday, was driving it around on Sunday and noticed the oil light come on. Pulled over at the next service station and checked the oil - it was extremely low. Thought this was a little odd but it was getting dark so I filled it up and drove the rest of the way home. Left it over night, checked in the morning and underneath it looked like an oil bomb had been let off. I took it in to the local garage to get checked (I initially thought it might have been the oil pressure switch after reading these forums) and they said it looked like it was going to be a bit of a job to find the leak and fix it. To diagnose the problem they had to spend a while removing parts of the engine (radiator, cam belt) so I just went ahead with them and told them to fix it once they found what the problem was since they had it in pieces anyway. It was apparently 3 seals which had been slowly leaking but one finally blew. After replacing all of the seals they started it up today and within minutes the oil pressure switch then blew...exciting! They've apparently: - replaced all seals (5 of them?) including rocker cover gasket - changed the cam belt, tensioner belt, some other belt in that area, and also a tensioner pulley (figured I may as well get it done at the same time since they had to remove them all to get at the oil leak) - replaced oil pressure switch - new antifreeze - oil change - leak stopper Total bill came in at around $700 for parts and labor. My question is this a relatively good price for the labor and parts? I'm heading overseas at some point and will probably have to part with the old girl so if anyone is interested she's had a good bit of service done recently

No I'm not 100% sure but everyone who has more of a clue than me seems to think it's the diff making the noise (not wheel bearings). Any suggestions for taking it somewhere to get it reconditioned? Thanks

I've got an 88 320i manual and yesterday a little light popped up on the dash which has a small clock and the word "inspection" lighting up. I am going to assume this means it is time for an inspection? If this is the case is this just a reminder for a general checkup a "xxxxxx" miles or is it likely to be something more serious? Any recommendations of a relatively inexpensive place to take the car to in Auckland city? Thanks.

The thing is it doesn't appear to be coming from above (i.e. the trunk seal). It is trickling down from that small gap I described. All of the lining in the trunk remains dry when it rains, but it is underneath it that the water pools. I have also sat inside the trunk when it has been raining and watched it come out from that place. I just have no idea what is actually behind that wheel well or where it could be coming in from. If a picture would help to show exactly where it is coming out from I can borrow a digital camera and take a picture. Any advice would be appreciated.

Hi, I've got a water leak in my trunk and have plugged about 4 holes already (leaking through aerial points, taillights etc) but I still have one more I've yet to trace. The water only leaks in if the car is parked on a downhill slope and is angled so the left wheels are sitting higher than the right (water then pools towards the upper right-hand-side of the trunk lid. If you're looking inside the trunk the water seems to dribble down from the small gap between the right-hand-side of the car and the enclosure the wheel is sitting (underneath) in. I have tried the usual (blocked drainage pipes from the sunroof) but have no idea where that small gap leads as it's a difficult angle to see at. Could it be a cracked drainage pipe? The water running underneath the right-hand corner of the back windshield? Any ideas appreciated. The panel beaters gave me a refund as they couldn't be of any help with their water tests. //Jono

Hi, I was wondering where the best place to get some BMW parts for my 88 E30 might be. I am looking for a hydraulic stay which holds the bonnet up, a 3 i/o 1-way valve which connects the wiper pump to the water jets (it'd be nice to NOT have water spray inside the engine bay whenever I try to clean the windscreen), a new rubber boot seal and a couple of other small parts.
