  1. Got my E30 up for sale. I replaced the steering rack as is was groaning with a trademe buy and it failed a WOF on play in the steering rack so I've decided to put it on trademe to see whether it'll sell as I'm getting married soon and don't have the time to swap another rack. The power steering shop quoted me 450-500 to recon the original or BMW do a seal kit for approx $250

    Check out the listing

    $4000 o.n.o

  2. Hi there,

So the rack in my E30 325i was making horrific noises so I sourced another and installed it. Everything

went swimmingly until I came to putting the column linkage back on. Its the type with the two universals and

the rubber disc in the middle. The new rack came with the same linkage but upon trying to refit it it seems to be

short by about 20mm. I measured the length of each linkage old and new and from the top of the spline to the cross member on each rack and they're the same so I'm stumped.

    Any ideas?

    Cheers

    Tim

  3. Hi Guys,

I've got a 88' 325i that strangely cuts out on bumps. I'm not entirely sure what causes it but I replace the ECU with a 173 a couple of months ago thinking it'd cure a common ECU fuel problem but apparently that wasn't the problem.

Any ideas what it could be?

    Cheers

  4. all these things can be intermotant

    fuel pump dying??

    faulty ecu relay??

    faulty fuel pump relay??

    crank sensor??

    alarm wiring??

need to find out when it dies , does it still have spark???

then start looking at fuel stuff .

if no spark then the electric side , lie crank sensor and relays and power supply to the ecu etc

Sweet that sounds good. Like you said its intermittent and doesn't usually last long enough to kill the motor but it has a couple of times. I think but I'm not sure that its a fuel issue but I'll keep watching and if I discover what it is I'll post back

  5. Hi Guys,

I went to drive the 325 on Tuesday after it had been sitting since Saturday and the clutch seems to have mysteriously lost 80% of its travel. Originally it started to engage near the top and had quite a long stroke but now I've only got about 2cm of travel right at the bottom.

I say it doesn't feel like a fluid leak because the travel it does have is real solid. Could something have seized to cause this. Its been pretty cold and wet lately

    Cheers

  6. dry solder joint is generally a hairline crack that appears around components on any circuit board over time, can be caused by heat expansion / contraction over time, poor quality solder

resolder with a bit of additional solder usually resolves most dry solder issues

Sweet thats what I was hoping to hear cheers

  7. Hi there,

I've only owned the car about 3 weeks and on Saturday and last night it cut out intermittently. From what I've found on the forum it sounds like a smoked capacitor connection in the ECU. I don't understand what is meant by dry solder join but could I just get in there and re-solder the capacitor?

    Cheers

  8. Hey guys,

So I hope I'm not being a complete mug but I was trying to remove the tie rod ball joint from the hub on the weekend and I assumed its a taper fit like my Mini. When I put the taper break on it and wound it up I was expecting it to release. To my surprise the pop wasn't the taper releasing but the solid cast iron taper break snapping both arms.

Just want to make sure it is a taper fit and not threaded in or something else

    Cheers

  9. Hey folks,

Just got myself an 88' 325i Coupe, 5 speed manual, lsd, Alpina rims. Somewhat of a longterm goal to own an E30 but I got sidetracked by a Mini and seven years later after first looking at buying one I've got one.

Look forward to hearing from you all and racking your brains for any problems I might have although avoidance is the goal

Quick pic for interest. Some of you might have seen the car around
