Do they like.. Explosively decharge while driving? Wasn't aware that it was a usual issue

So my 330i just... Broke down badly and is stuck on the side of the road with barely enough power to operate the locks. If anyone is able to help out by scanning the ecu or anything it'd be hugely appreciated. Its just off Mays Road if knowing the area helps... I'll copy and paste the details below of what happened as well so if anyone has any experience with a similar issue that'd be great So after my 330d got carted off to the mechanic, my 330i failed to start. My mum had driven it earlier in the day and said it ran perfectly. I got home and tested it, electrical ticking kind of noise and the battery was registering 11.77V; flat battery symptoms. Jumped it off my dads Prado and it started first tick and idled perfectly. I left it idling while I packed up then took it for a quick spin round the block to give it some juice. It was about 80% of the way to the middle of the gauge so I decided to put my foot down. I was at about 5500rpm when I feel/hear a loud thump followed by a squeak, like a tyre squeal. I lost power, a big array of lights came on the dash. I freewheeled round the corner and pulled over. There's barely enough power to operate the window; it painfully squeaked up. Same with the door lock stalk thing. Angel eyes (wired to auxillary power) won't work. It won't even attempt to crank. I have power to the dash as that still works. I had also noticed that when i was driving the abs light and a couple of other lights (can't recall offhand sorry) were coming on when I was braking. I haven't a clue what is happening so please help! I now have two broken down BMWs today was not a good day

This is what I'm leaning towards..there is still the same old turbo whine noticeable, it is just overshadowed by the whooshing. As best we could determine it sounds like it's coming from the turbo area; is there a commonly failing pipe in that area?

I have one of two. Anything above 1500rpm and the car bogs and surges and won't go anywhere. Below that and it feels 100% normal. No clouds of smoke other than what was blown out when we started it, which was blue I think. My car still has its usual turbo whistle (that's a good sign that its not blown right?) Hmm that could be a wee bit of a long drive with no turbo Haha I just bought a cheap $30 one off trade me, it connects over Bluetooth to my phone (sometimes..its pretty crap). Very handy though, I can read and clear fault codes as well as read all the sensors etc.

I'm in Christchurch... I'd say I'd meet you halfway but that could be difficult haha. How about you? Not too sure sorry; I'm using the Torque Pro for Android app and it has a boost gauge in the app (can't remember the exact name they've given it). I've tested it before when the car is moving (got ~17.5psi) and I'm fairly sure my idle results are consistent too. In this case my car was on axle stands at the front and being revved in idle, and the app's gauge was registering a changing turbo boost, varying up to 5psi with the throttle I used.

Friendly little whistle sounds basically like what I have/had, you're probably ok. The noise we're getting from my car is distinctly unhealthy sounding, a load whooshing noise when revving and my very own blowoff valve when changing gears. Also, this talk of blown turbos is getting me paranoid. I connected my OBD scanner up and was monitoring the boost while revving it in neutral, and it registered up to 5psi with the throttle I gave it - surely that's saying that the turbo is still alive and well?

Is this a whistle over and above your standard turbo whistle? My car (the one this thread is about) always had a very distinct turbo whistle from about 1500 -> ~3000rpm, give or take... I'm hoping your going to say that's all yours does too

I've had this car for nearly 2 years (this December) and I'm selling because I want to free up some cash for living costs. This car has been very well maintained, serviced by Jeff Gray and Action Automotive (BMW/Subaru/VW specialists based in Christchurch). It has had the ignition coils, valve cover/rocker cover gaskets and power steering pump replaced (they have released a newer, stronger pump which is now installed). It has 4 near-new tyres which have been replaced during my ownership. More work has been done and is in the service history provided. I've done my best to look after it with regards to cleanliness. It is almost always stored under a carport at home. I've had the rims refurbished to remove all signs of curbing (none has occurred since), I've replaced the BMW roundel on the bonnet and all 4 BMW center stickers on the wheels (they seem to fall off ~100,000km). I have installed aftermarket LED angel eyes in the style of the newer BMWs, as can be seen in the photos (fully legal, never had any issues, they function as daytime running lights). These will come with the car unless otherwise requested. I've had the CD changer disconnected from the back of the stock BMW headunit and an iPhone adapter fitted by About Sound, a Christchurch company. It charges and plays music through the otherwise stock sound system. This does not work with the iPhone 5. This is can be easily reverted without hassle or any harm to the car. The gearbox has recently had the transmission fluid changed and shifts smoothly. I drive regularly on the open road (Akaroa and back, etc) to make sure it stays in good condition. It is a heavy car with a powerful engine so round town fuel consumption is not great, a typical value of 12-12.5l/100km with 100% round town driving can be expected. Open road is amazing, with 4 people and a full load of luggage I managed 7.8l/100km from Wanaka to Christchurch.

So I was driving along, heard a loud clunk, power steering gone and now it's been diagnosed as a broken power steering pump. Got a quote from my mechanic for $828 + gst for the new pump and 3 hours labour. Just wondering if anyone else has had this done and comment on whether this is a fair price or not?
