  1. On a cruise from Mercer (fuel stop - car and containers as we can’t buy 98 here) to Whangarei at motorway cruising speeds and occasional outburst on the open road, around 230 kms, wait for it, 8.4.  But, short trips around town, plus thrashing it sees that rise to 12.

  2. Shuey’s guide to buying an E92 M3.  Do the research, do a lot of research, find the right car (not so easy now, took me the thick end of three years), if and when you do find the right car, buy it!  You won’t be disappointed.  2010 NZ new Competition Pack, 53K kms now.  Owned it for just over a year and have no intention of ever selling it.  DCT with GTS software upgrade (super quick gear changes and no problem with reverse), EDC, etc.  Love it.  Don’t daily it and don’t care about fuel consumption.  Mine sits on late 11’s to early 12’s. I am not known for having a light right foot.   Have owned E36 M3’s, not E46, but I have driven E46.  Great car.  But, for sheer driving pleasure, sure footed handling, an engine sound to die for, it’s E92 all the way for me.

^ can you elaborate on that

What’s there to elaborate on?  If you drive the car every day, then use Gull 98.  If you don’t, and I don’t, then use Gull 98 at your peril.  The ethanol coagulates and causes grief to engine components and parts.

The local Mobil did advertise the 98 as a  ethanol blend. Was written on the pump. I think they sell both but I no longer use the brand..

i did try running my e46 m3 on it. It seem to engine knock more than normal 98 so I stopped using it. That was before I discovered the issue with the bike.

ive since learnt that Ducati still recommend that you don’t use it on bikes. It was causing the plastic fuel tanks to bulge and swell.

BMW saying ok to use after certain dates but I’ve lost trust in it.

The good thing for myself was my bike no longer started which I thought was just stale fuel. I might have ended up with high pressure fuel being sprayed over my lower body and engine exhaust headers. Could have got very nasty quickly.

    Normal 98?

You can run 10%, it isnt high ethanol %. Stock fueling can adjust for 10% but 30%+ is a problem on many cars without a specific tune.

So can I run Gull 98 or not?  Not interested in the science.  Just want to know if I can use the stuff I can buy down the road or if I need to keep buying Mobil or BP out of Auckland.  Cheers.

Ran Mobil 98 in. Car and bike for a few years.

Didnt ride the bike much and had in the tank too long. Tried to start bike ( Ducati 748r) no go.

left it for a few months more and then got dealer to pick up.

basically fuel lines had turned to a snot / marshmallow substance, fuel pump fckd , sender stuffed. Basically $1400 in parts.

i won’t use ethanol blends again.

Are you saying Mobil is an ethanol blend?

Gull 98 is Gull 95 with ~10% ethanol.

~80% gasoline, ~10% ethanol, ~4% Toluene, ~3% Benzene and ~3% proprietary 'performance additives'

Yes you can run it all day long. The issues with ethanol on modern engines isn't generally that it corrodes anything, its that it has ~30% less energy than gasoline for a specific volume and has a different ideal air fuel ratio - in high ethanol percentages the ECU is unable to adjust fueling to compensate risking detonation.

So, you say yes I can run it all day long and then you pretty much say no I shouldn’t towards the end of your post.  ??????

  8. Sounds awesome.  All I really want to know is can I run my E92 M3 on the stuff.  If I can, then I can buy it here, instead of what’s happening now - mercy dashes to Auckland to pick up 98 fuel for my M3 and my mates M5.  Cheers.

  9. Hi team.  Is Gull 98 ok to run in E92 M3?  I have heard no.  Today I was told yes by someone who runs his F10 M5 on it all the time.  Would be great if it’s ok as can’t buy 98 in Whangarei (except for Gull) and continuously dragging 98 home from Auckland by the 20 litre container.  Cheers.

  10. To all those who don’t believe in the E92 M3 and those contemplating buying one, just do it, after you find the right one of course.  Searched for almost three years for my NZ new Competition Pack, found it, bought it, love it.  I have just completed a 2200 kms road trip in 96 hours around the North Island.  Loved every second of it; main roads, back roads, cruising, hooning.  The car is capable, quick and an absolute pleasure to drive.  The last sector of my road trip was Mercer to Whangarei - 215 kms at cruising and ‘slightly’ over legal speeds.  18 litres of 98.  Unless I’m mistaken that’s 8.4 l/100kms.  That is hard to believe from a car with grunt to burn, a noise to die for, and an M3 badge on its tail.  Don’t know anything about the 335i but this I do know, as my BMW mechanic tried to push me that way as well, a 335i is not and never will be an M3.

That's pretty respectable, my 335i was definitely worse than that.  Well, I've taken the plunge and just bought an E90 M3, see I'll find out for myself soon enough ?  Not a big issue for me as I'll be averaging down with the Polo daily.

Well done.  Love mine.  Don’t daily drive it though.  Have a 530d which is quick and cheap (well it used to be before the pump prices went ballistic) to run.

Oh the V8 is much worse, I think you'd be looking at something like 15l/km, so for daily that's not great. But if you aren't using it for your daily commute then that probably isn't a big deal.

My M3 is sitting on 12.4 and that’s after some “spirited” driving and it hasn’t been on a decent long trip for awhile.  All the research I did pre purchase pointed towards 14 but haven’t got anywhere near that yet.
