  1. You don't actually need to pull out the glovebox (or in our case, any of the dash trim)

What you can do if you're flexible enough is recline the drivers seat fully, then lie on your back with with your head facing upwards under the dash. You'll then see the black knob which you twist to remove the microfilter. It will most likely come out in bits, that's OK. Give the recess a vacuum to remove any other leaves etc in there, and then install the new filter. Finally, call a chiropractor ;)

You can buy the new filter element from BMW.

    Good luck

Cheers GB, i'll claim it on ACC.... :P

  2. Hi All,

My wifes E36 318is A/C Fan blows bugger all air through the cockpit, even when on maximum. A mate of mine also has the same problem on his E36. Someone once said to me it was a filter behind the dash? Is this true or is it something else? We're moving to CHCH in January, so obviously going to want it for the summer, but more important the winter when i freeze my balls off i want the heater to work very well!

    Any ideas?

  3. The clutch master cylinder is faulty

Thats for that information. unfortunately this morning it played up to the point i couldn't drive it, so it is now in with Ernst being looked at. Whats the repair cost on the master cylinder? so i have some idea before he rings me and dont fall over from shock!

  4. hey all,

Every now and then when i first get in to the car, and depress the clutch, it goes straight to the floor, and slowly comes back up as if the hydraulic pressure is building behind it.

is this normal?? its a E30 318i, manual conversion done by Ernst and Rob at Bavarian.

The reservoir fluid is fine, and the clutch is firm and positive once the pressure is up.

  5. Mine have never worked and I don't know of anyone's E30 tilts working, ever, just recently removed the mechanism from my car and the fluid didn't seem to be anything special.

cheers mate, might go see ernst see if he has ever got them going. otherwise i'll rip 'em out.

  6. sounds like the e30 ones are different...the e 34 are mechanical, there isnt any fluid involved...Ian it doesnt need to move much..but i can see definite movement in mine..i will do an experiment and tell you how much movement there is parked say 1 m from a wall....

Yeah the E34 ones are electrical (i had a e34 525IASE Motorsport). and yeah you can definately see the difference in them.

these ones are annoying me though, cause i keep having to screw them in and out manually. and its not so easy to do when its dark!

  7. I think you should make custom kits instaed or replicas. Now that I own an M325i I understand what people were talking about when I brought a Tech2 kit for my old pre F/L 318i. It will make the genuine Motorsports look like part of the E30 mob instead of being their unique selves. And run of the mill E30s like Motorsports. I dunno, my views have changed over the last few years.

its not any different to E36 Owners putting M3 kits on they're cars. at the end of the day there is a real market out there for people wanting Mtech II Kits. not everyone has the luxury of owning a Motorsport, but they can make their's look just as good. i do agree with you that there is a heap of Beemers (not just E30's) out there with Motorsport kits on them, but at the end of it all, you can still tell a real motorsport apart from an replica. and then there is the pleasure of knowing you can leave any of them for dead!

  8. Before you paint anything, try covering what you dont want as black with a thin layer of vaseline.

I havent tried it myself but I understand you can then just wipe it off once the paint has dried and there is no need for you to sand back the paint youve just put on.

yeah MP grease works well as well (use it on aircraft when pinstriping) but the problem is because the surface has to be warm the grease/petrol jelly melts and gets into the paint while you're spraying.

but if its cold it works well!!

  9. buy black wrinkle finish paint (from repco)

make sure that when you spray it the air temp and the temp of the rocker cover are above 21 degrees c, i used a heat gun to warm up the rocker cover and i also used the heat gun to dry the paint, it produced a nice fine wrinkle finish.

then use a file or an orbital sander and a sanding block to sand the embossing back to the aluminium.

if you are fussy you can put a clear coat over the lot, but i didn't bother. it looks tits though!

thanks guys, i'll use all your tips and will take photo's once it's done. i remember ernst used to sell them for a small price + the swap of your old one. but i'd rather do it myself.

as for red..... hmmm not too sure on that! i thought about blue pearl mica once... but i think i'll stick with the good ol' black

  10. I got a can of black heat paint (Hardware/paint store) + primer + sand paper of fine grit

Then I preped by getting the shizz off with critrus spray to break down, then a wire cloth or rag or something on a battery gun to get it off. Just faster then straight sand paper. Then I cleaned with thinners, so I had a good clean surface, then primered (following instructions on can), then dry, wet sand, dry, primer again if needed, or first coat of paint (lightly), then second coat, (again, following can instructions).

Then to get the embossed BMW and stripes up, sand (I used an orbital - a non circular sand better), of highish grit to remove paint (may pay to put masking tape on the dried paint to stop scratches), then a very high sand to remove any sandpaper marks and you should be done!

thanks for that bud, great help! will give it a shot this weekend!

  11. thanks ill have them looked at.

my car is doing the same thing, FL 318i. i've checked for vaccum leaks and didn't find any. mine is doing bascially the same thing. start it up, it runs beautfiully. next time you start it up while its warm, it won't idle.

Tomo: let me know how you get on and where you go to get them looked at. :)

  12. I agree, all the world rally cars make the same noise (due to straight cut gears)

That 320 has the engine from Johnny Reids French Touring 320i in it. And yes it is the gearbox, a more interesting fact is that the gears must be replaced after every 2nd race due to wear. i have a DVD at home on BMW race cars (starts from the early 3.0 CSL Le mans car till now) and this exact video is on it. it also has another one of the car at another Dutch track, and he is hitting upwards of 320-330km/ph. another one is Hans Muller's Works M3GTR round the nurburgring, racing a GT1 Porsche. its a sight to see, especially when the GTR gets sideways.'

Check it out its called Bavarian Speed: BMW Race Cars 1972 - 2006

its all in German but is subtitled.
