  1. Gidday. I used Ray of HELLBM (sponsor of this site) for my second hand inner tie-rod, after having failed a VTNZ check. I payed $50 (incl courier delivery to South Island). My mechanic fitted it for around $100. Buying new parts are obviously always going to be the best option, but quality second hand parts are perfectly acceptable in some cases. It has passed subsequent VTNZ checks too.

    Aye!

  2. Hi I need a spare key. At $364.84 plus GST (Keyless Entry) and 105.26 plus GST (Standard) from Dunedin BMW dealer I decided to hold off, as I am off to France for a month in a few days. I wonder if anyone has purchased a key from an European Dealer (outside of Germany - i.e. France). I am taking my VIN number and will try anyway, but just wanted to know your thoughts...........good or bad idea? I know I can't control exchange rates, but even so I wonder if it would be cheaper?

    95 e36 323i. Thanks in advance.

  3. Gidday. I have a 95' 323 E36. As already said - make sure it has been serviced and generally looked after and for about 5K you will be happy. I have nearly 200k and will be putting it through the second (BMW) inspection soon. I have had no problems so far. I have the Jatco auto jerk too, but won't bother about getting it fixed as I found how to ''drive around it'' It has a bit of power too. The 323 has the same engine as the 325......brrrrrrrmmmmm! Buy a 323i say ;)

ps. This site has been valuable to me (especially as a newb)

  4. Gidday. I am away overseas for a month. I wonder if there are any ''care'' tips for my 96'e36 323i (odo.196k).

It will be parked outside (off street) my flat. I live in the Southern Lakes area and will be away from 1st OCT for the month. Anything useful appreciated. Thanks in advance.

p.s. .....Because I love my baby!!

  5. Just a 'shout out' to Ray for great service. I am able to carry out some repairs (change a windscreen washer pump)but I do not have access to parts etc...I am from the deep South Island (nearest dealership 350kms away). I didn't require brand new parts and was pleased to be able to resolve my latest problem with good second hand parts from HELLBM.

    Cheers Mate.

    dave.

  6. Gidday. To pass my WOF I need to source a r/h steering tie rod and the pump that pushes the water to the windscreen is dead. I live in Queenstown (nearest dealership Dunedin) and would prefer to spend less on this project.

So any good second hand parts that will suffice would be ideal.

    Thanks in advance.

  7. Gidday. To W.O.F. (recheck) my 1996 323i (e36) I need to attend to a worn R/H steering tie rod and the windscreen washer is not distributing water to the screen. When I pull the activator arm on the steering column there is no sound from the washer motor and no water comes out. I have checked for blockages in the hoses and jets. I have also checked for blown fuses. I don't want my mechanic to begin a wild/golden goose chase. Has anyone else had a similar repair task? Any suggestions on how to save time in diagnostics are welcome. Would a scan maybe pick something up?

    Thanks in advance.

  8. Gidday. I would like to replace a lost key. I have a 1996 e36 323i and it is was a keyless entry key. I live in Queenstown and have no dealership. Meantime I do have the spare. Thanks in advance for any advice i.e. price and process.

  9. Blown bulbs maybe or a loose connection?

I no that Yuen on this forum has a pair going for a very fair price.

I find the spotlights on my e36's make a big difference to driving at night

Cheers bro. I already had them removed and re-checked for WOF. I know that one is buggered due to cracked clear lens/plastic and has let in water. The other probably just a blown bulb? But not fussed at the moment. Looking forward to the new look with my cavity design. Aye.

  10. 1. Do you have a sticker somewhere in your car (usually windshield) that says what oil was used at the last oil change? Going with the same type would be fine. Otherwise - you are free to choose really, whether you want to go with normal oil or synthetic. I changed my car (1991 E36 320i with the M50 engine) over from normal oil (Pennzoil) to synthetic (Castrol R Synthetic 5W30, now Castrol EDGE 5W30 at 140,000km. No problems at all. I have read that it's not a good idea to change to synthetic if your engine has done higher KMs though, as it may cause engine oil leaks. Maybe I was just lucky? YMMV.

    2. I'd explain it but this one will do it better. http://www.pelicanparts.com/BMW/techarticl...-Oil-Change.htm

    3. Around 6.5L.

For future references, check here: http://www.bimmerdiy.com/e36. It will have instructions for most jobs you do.

PS: Remember to reset the oil service lights after you do the oil change. You should be able to find the DIY on the page above.

Will do and cheers completely Yuen.

  11. Thanks heaps for all the great info...so far (including reseting my service indicator lights).

I would like to DIY my oil change. Could anybody share their secrets? I serviced about 3 varieties of cars (non cartridge filter) about 20 times, but never a BMW.

    1. Which is the correct oil to use for this engine E36 M52 @187km.

    2. Where is the cartridge housing/filter located.

    3. Things/tips I should know i.e. Volume of oil to replace.

    Thank you in advance. V.

  12. Wow! cool info on reseting the service indicator. Yes I think I will tackle the oil change myself. Could anybody tell me:

    1. Where is the cartridge filter located.

    2. Which oil product should I use.

    3. The quantity of oil to replace.

    4. Any other handy tips or things to avoid/watch out for.

    Thanks in advance. V.

  13. They drop off at an even rate, for me about 2,500 to 3,000 km per light

Thanks 3pedals. I wonder.....if I were to service it at @10K travelled (with some green lights remaining) do they have to reset the computer? As I am not sure of travelling a full 12500 - 15000kms between services, or is this the accepted mileage for this type of car?? Further, I do not know of any dealer for appropriate service in my immediate area (queenstown) either. Regards V.

  14. Gidday all. The green lights on the dash still have 3 to go till the recommended service, according to the computer. I bought it with 180000km (all 5 green lights on) and since clocked up the total to 187000kms. Do these lights drop off quicker as the service draws closer or are they not very accurate? Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

    1996 e36 323i (jap import).

  15. Has anyone here ever done it?Thoughts?Tips?

I'm gunna print that off and give it a go on the weekend.

Mine faded for about 2 months, before coming back nice and bright like the rest of the displays. However the check control display has always been bright but with only 30-40% readable info, as mentioned by another. I am just going to leave it all as is. 1996 e36 323i (j/import).
