  1. Do they carry sniffers with them in the mine? I was wondering the other day.

    At work, whenever we enter a fuel tank we have a little yellow box on us that measures O2 content, and gas volatility, got an alarm etc on it. Id imagine they would have something similar?

    Yes we have hand held gas detectors that monitor O2, CO and CH4 and they have alarms etc. Pretty much all of our machines have them too and will shut down if in an area of >1.25% GBA of methane. No Canaries, sorry :P

  2. A sad moment indeed.

    Being a coal miner myself and knowing how many safety systems are in place I never thought New Zealand could ever have another explosion. The cause of all of this had to have been complacency on someones part, as it has been in the past. Pike River was not a big place in mining terms and I can't see how they could have missed something like a heating. Bearing in mind that they can be incubating for a few days to a few weeks before combustion can occur and if the various gas monitors throughout a mine don't detect it, then someone walking near or past it will because of the smell.

    I had to work underground on Tuesday night. Imagine how uncomfortable we felt when we heard dayshift had been evacuated from the mine because a heating had been discovered underground in an old working :S

  3. I have a BD5 RS manual and find it's better on gas on long trips (the same, if not better than my e36 318) but once I start giving it the berries on backroads the gas just disappears.

    I like how responsive it is for round town driving but that VOD at 4k rpm really just kills the buzz a bit.

  4. The Gearbox Issue for the VH41 is not as bad as one might think, People seem to think of a W or R series toyota gearbox as being the only worth while unit with a remove able bell housing that can be adapted to other engines.

    Borg Warner T5 Gearbox from a Mustang / Camaro / Holden /Ford

    Has the remove able bell-housing and could be adapted to nearly anything with a lot of information available for it.

    They are known to take substantial abuse behind v8 engiens they were factory fitted behind, dont be fooled these gearboxs may sound old school but they were put behind many OEM brands and produced right up until the late nineties

    there is normally one or two on trade me for a good price the newer versions have a higher torque capacity and are cheaper to upgrade or rebuild.

    I think even latter day XR-6 turbos use the T5. Failing that, You can probbaly buy a trans adapter to mate an RB25 or VG30 box behind them (both engines may use the same box?)

  5. Fairly heavy and growly but you can understand them. Try an album called Dethklok from Metalocalypse.

    Also, download a song called Ride the light by Mortification. It's just an awesome song to crank and mosh to when you're on the piss. :banghead:

  6. Here are the answers you wanted

    1)used factory toyota ecu/loom.all bmw systems are separate,just needed to have tach modded to work and temp gauge changed as is controlled by bmw computer which no longer exists.

    2)the only mod in the engine bay is to move the abs pump.I also used a custom sump.

    3)passed cert no probs with standard brakes,i have uprated the suspension and lowered car.

    Any other questions just ask

    Robert

    Cool, thanks for the reply. Talked to an auto sparky mate of mine and He's going to sort my wiring. Just a couple more questions;

    i) Engine mounts. I'm going to make mine out of mild steel. I want to have an RHS middle section, ends cut to the right angle with a bracket welded on each end. One bolting to the engine block and the other bolting to the existing rubber/steel mount. Will this work?

    ii) How is your diff/driveline holding up? I'll probably have to upgrade mine to a 6-cylinder unit or something aftermarket as my car's only a 318iS.

    Thanks again for the answers. My immediate plans are on hold for now anyway. Have to save some money up just incase our workforce goes on strike in March.

  7. Hey there guys, sorry to bump an old thread. Just a few quick questions;

    i) Did you use the factory Toyota ECU/Loom and if so, did it affect any other systems?

    ii) Did anything have to be modified to accomodate the engine? (i.e steering rack etc.?)

    iii) Did you pass the certification with standard brakes/suspension or have they been upgraded?

    Thanks in advance if you're able to lend any advice.

  8. Heya people I have a '97 E36 318is that's been off the road for a while but will be recommissioned in the next few weeks to roadworthy status. It's black with an M3 kit, sunroof, black leather and some 17's that I think were dealer optioned with a BMW centre cap. (five-spoke bent tuning-fork style if that makes sense?).

    Anyway, I was wondering if it would be worthwhile doing an M50/52 swap with manual gearbox? Bearing in mind my particular example isn't worth a hell of a lot so selling and buying a 328i isn't really an option. The current engine as you may have already guessed is an M44B19. Is any fabrication required? or can i just buy mounts, engine, loom trans etc and fit it all up?

    What are your guys opinions? If this doesn't work out I'll probably just end up saving for a while and doing a 1UZ swap.

  9. Hey you guys just wondering if anyone would have any idea as to what the problem with my E36 is.

    I have a 318is with the M44B19. It makes a loud ticking noise that gets faster as the revs rise but you can't hear it after about 3k rpm. I found a similar topic about this but the guy said His noise was coming from the alternator. My first guess was noisy lifters or something but the noise doesn't seem to be coming from the head. It sounds like it's coming from somewhere under the inlet manifold. Doesn't seem to be the belts or anything either. Could it be the timing chain tensioner? I've heard they make a similar noise when they need attention.
