If it has one the battery sensor is more to do with charging side of it so having it unregistered shouldn't affect starting. Have they got good charge? Good idea to get the battery load tested before buying a new one given they aren't cheap.

Id check all the battery and engine ground cables are in good condition and tight then try tapping the starter motor with a hammer etc and try to start

Thought it might be the case for only charging it, he already has the new battery and it's tested good to be sure, can't tap the starter though it's a bit out of reach

I wonder if its related to this, http://response.bmw.co.nz/battery-terminal-recall or the other (overseas) recall for the battery cable.

I suspected that too, tried jumping the car from the terminals under the hood with no change sadly, and the connections look brand new and are tight, so it's unlikely to be that I think, when I can I'll find a long bar and tap the starter to see if that helps any, if it's the starter then I'll have an interesting time getting to it, not used to the n52 engines, only the m50-m54 :S

  2. Hey all, My uncles e90 started cranking slowly recently, he thought it was his battery so bought a new one, but now the car wont start at all, with either the old or new, just makes a soft click and nothing else when you press the start button, is this because the battery needs to be programmed to the car?? or just that the starter has just died?? It would be annoying if it was the starter though as the car only has 70 thousand kms

  3. World Radio Pulled from a 2002 e39 m-sport Flat Pin connector, Looks to be in good condition but is untested.

These usually go for stupid amounts on ebay, but as its untested im open to offers around $300, Located in Papakura, Auckland

    Loose spark plug???

Checked that today, there was a bit of oil down cyl 4 so i cleaned that up and retorqued the plug, no change, changed the water pump too, No change, with the belt removed no change, so im starting to lean toward a sticky lifter i think, most people on the internet recommend seafoam, but i dont think we have that here??

  5. Hey all, got done today replacing my broken radiator shroud coolant and also resealed my valve cover gasket, however now at idle ive got this weird sound that didnt exist before, if i bring the rpms up ever so slightly the noise goes away, so im not thinking its the lifters, and ive gone over the car with propane and not been able to find any vacuum leaks, and ive tested my pulleys and they feel and sound fine too, this noise is there hot or cold, im a bit stumped as i cant pin point the noise other than being around the middle of the top of the engine?
Ive also checked my DISA valve, its fine, I cant think of anything else i can check?
Video of the noise is here:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4GkdmZojhpI

and no, the  noise does change as its just idling, it sort of sounds like something coming through a pipe??

    Car is a 2001 e39 525i

  6. To update it, ive been watching lots of youtube vids, and found it could POTENTIALLY be water intrusion from heavy rain, since my bmw lives on the road ill assume it was that as it hasnt done it since and hasnt really rained since, ill keep an eye on it, though im still a bit paranoid that not all the power is there that should be , Ill try new Cam position sensors some time soon though

  7. Tested Fuel pressure the other day, Solid all the way through the RPM range,
This morning however, i fired her up and she was misfiring REALLY badly, scanned her immediately and got p1350 and p1342 so a cylinder 1 and 5 misfire, which.. shouldn't be happening as Ive Literally just replaced the coils, plugs and rocker cover gasket + other stuff , after about a minute she started to idle ok , still no check engine light, but she also is idling louder than usual now...
Either im missing something or I still have a vacuum leak???

Not sure what BMW spec but it sounds reasonable. Key on and off a few times may have brought it up to 50. Did you check the pressure when being revved, like 2-3k. Did you disconnect the fpr via vacuum hose in engine bay and check that.

no, only idle and off testing, didnt disconnect the FPR either, Ill give that a go though when i have time

Sound like you have not scanned it yet or reset adaptions? Cleaned the MAF sensor?

Ive scanned it, I havnt reset any adaptations,Not sure how I can reset adaptations? Ill have to look it up, and not touched the MAF, No codes other wise, I only have a bluetooth ews2.7 ODB scanner and its a "fake" one so i know some apps dont work with it

     525i M30b25 1983.

Ok it will move slowly off the line, but it gets to 100kph eventually and won't budge over 3000rpm. When driving the pedal to floor vs feathering throttle have the same feedback, kinda nothing happens.

Throttle position sensor? Air mass flap thing?

Possibly unrelated but the instrument cluster needles (fuel and water temp) bounce all over the place when anything electrical is used and the Odometer doesn't work.

Is there a catalytic converter on your model? a plugged cat would do something like that for sure, if it does, disconnect it, tie it up to one side and take the car for a spin ( probably a loud one! ) it might be a night and day difference, if not then im fresh out of ideas

  11. Hey all, I have a 2001 e39 525i that I recently acquired with a few things wrong, I recently had to replace the intake elbow, the CCV, rebuilt the VANOS( one that seems to be leaking out of the housing now, frustratingly) , replaced the plugs and coils, replaced the DISA seal and rebuilt it ( the plunger holds vacuum ) and now she starts and seems to drive just fine, HOWEVER, today I popped her into sport mode ( tip-tronic ) and noticed that she doesn't feel as fast as I would have thought she should be and after 4 krpm she seems to surge in power ? its not a heavy cut in and out kind of power more so like a soft boost in power while revving that seems to come and go? ive been scratching my head on what it could be and the only thing I can think of is possibly the fuel pump is slowly on its way out? or the Fuel pressure regulator? she idles dead smooth and starts easily every morning, and unfortunately I haven't been able to monitor short term and long term fuel trims to see if something is up, is there something else that I could check?

  12. nicely specced too, only the very last of the E34s had airbags both passenger and driver, wider grill on all models, facelift, usually premium audio standard etc.

if you were in the market for a 525i this would be the one to get.

Yes indeed, Im a bit sad that I need to sell it, I took the price from 3500 to 3000 and only one persons enquired so far, so im a bit puzzeled as to why no real bites, I also have Pioneer Bluetooth radio in it, its great for streaming music from the phone while also being hands free , leather seats with arm rests right around, Its a bit hard to keep it clean when your works close-ish to a train rail though, dust accumulates on it quick, but I do try and clean it regularly, barley any paint imperfections, only a bit scruffy on the bumpers, and No Cat converters so its got a Great exhaust note on the standard exhaust
