  1. Hi all,  looking for recommendation which PDR company to use, in the Wellington area.

There are a few out there but since thge last time I needed one was almost 15 years ago, things would have changed by now.  Would be good to hear your experience and recommendation.  Prefer a mobile one and can work from my garage.  I've only got one dent to take out at the rear quarter panel of the Boxster. Thanks

How many K's on your 116i? just so I know when to expect this perhaps.

    59900 kms, 2013, NZ new

In actual fact, while buttoning up everything, something else was leaking coolant.  There was an O ring under the turbo that also leaked.

I suspect it's the age of the car where everything starts to leak.

Annoyingly, there was no indication that anything was wrong apart from the one "engine temp' message that flashed, and the fact that the reservoir level was down below the Min level.  The engine's response itself was restricted by the ECU, but there was no code, no warning light, nothing, nada.  But without any code you would think that the car had always been that 'slow'.

This is my son's car and he's just got back from finishing his year-long TI at another city so I'd just been able to drive his car.  Don't know how long this had been an issue.

Not at the back but a few more around the engine. My old work place we stopped doing jobs like these because they all tend to start failing one after another, aka game of wack-a-hole. Most owners understandably don't want to keep spending 1000's on these sort of repairs.

Understandable, especially the value of these cars drop by 50% every 3 years, and before long the cost of one repair is about 10% of the value of the car.  Unfortunate, as I think these are good cars and I'd rather drive a 6-7 year old BMW rather than a 2-3 year old Mazda.

  4. Thanks for clarifying this, in realoem it is shown as #1 - which I didn't spot until just now.

There isn't anything else at the back of the engine that's called 'housing' and can leak, is it?

Unfortunately the job sheet isn't very clear on whether the cost is part+labour or parts only.

"approx $805 for replacement housing and seals. Labour content is approximate as access to housing will require some disassembly of other engine components"

Hence I wanted to know which part will cost $800 that can leak.  Based on the information you have helpfully provided, the costs is a total of labour+parts and not parts only.

Had that one on my watchlist too for ages. Was wondering why it took so long to sell as it didn't even seem that badly priced, especially as it was NZ New, manual, under 100,000km and an interesting blue over tan colour combination. Was wondering if it potentially had some issues as I had watched the Boxster market all year and many other examples came and went except for that one. However, I believe it has finally sold in the last week or so.

Hah, at last.  I went to take a look. Front bumper has different shade to the rest of the car.  Front radiators half-blocked by rotten leaves. Interior hasn't been looked after so it was dirty-brown.  Discs badly scored all around and they didn't want to negotiate on the price.

  6. Price is roughly at the right level for the mileage.  There is.a NZ new 987.1 with 90kms in Welly for $29k, been sitting for months now.

Unless been refreshed, suspension will likely due soon (any clonking noise?), as well as reservoir bottle (they crack from the ongoing cycle of hot and cold).

GLWS, I think I have it in my watchlist, and good on you for putting the wheel cap(s) the right way!

Yes it is a 987.1 S so bore scoring is definitely a concern of mine. Will definitely look out for it - I saw a 987.1 Cayman S 2 weeks ago up for sale with bore scoring, and there's currently a 997.1 911 with bore scoring for sale at a dealer in Wellington - seems to be more of an issue than the famed IMS?

Yes that's right, bore scoring seems to be the main problem especially for 997/987 gen 1 while IMS is the main issue for 996/986 gen 2 mostly.  Hence I got rid off my 996 as I didn't want to spend $5k for IMS Solution then having to fork out another $30k to remediate the cylinder walls. Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be a pattern that people can use to determine whether a vehicle will have bore scoring in its later life or not.

I was looking for 987.1 non S or .2 - mine came up for sale for a good price, so why not eh.  Manual is fun but my wife wouldn't want to drive it.

I wish at least one my Porsches is not grey or black, but beggars can't be choosers....

  8. Hey congrats from another Porsche owner.  I bought my 987.2 back in Sept. to keep the 997.2 company.  I remembered someone said that you can't have too many Porsches......

If the Cayman is a 987.1 S, watch Jake Raby's videos on .1 S cars, and check for bore scoring.  Remediating M97 engine costs around $30-40k, easily.

Where's the commitment?! 😊  I go there from Wellington, such is the quality of work.

Haha, my son isn't that interested in cars (yet?) - he'll do the minimal to get the job done which is not a good thing for a car that we've had in the last 5 years and carefully maintained.

You should consider Begley Motor Works in Marton.  Excellence personified.

You can get Jon on ‭021 651 591‬

Thanks, might be too far for my son, would need to organise transport there and back ... although he lived in Marton a couple of years ago and commuted to Palmy for his summer research project

  11. For the 2013 116i, my son has it now and don't want him to go into a random place for servicing and WOF.

Looks like Manawatu BMW is a good choice, I wonder whether they offer drop-off in the morning, he's based at the hospital which is not too far but not too close to the dealer.

  12. Have just received service parts excl. oil filter for my F20, ordered on the 5th, arrived on the 15th.  Cheapest overall for genuine BMW parts.  Unfortunately, they don't have oil filter for my 1-series.

bmwpartsonline's pricing was a little bit cheaper but they didn't have the spark plugs.
