  1. Hi  my 328  I  s  manual     dies  once engine is  up to  temp   &  wont start    cranks OK      will start after about 2  hours   & runs fine .   no   fault lmessage on the dash  & i dont have a scan tool .  Mech friend  suspects  crank angle sensor    common fault on other  EFI  cars .  Is there anyway i can test it without   getting it to  dealer    or    buying  a  new  1   & hoping it fixes it    


  2. E30  325   flywheel    just been machined   with  brand new Sachs plate    &  clutch  cover in   resonable condition  couple  hot spots on it  Wrongly     Sold to  me as replacement for  the dual mass  flywheel  /clutch for my  328  .  doesnt fit   .        $  350   lot

Tried him didnt reply  .  Its an after  market   liteweight  steel    motor     sport  flywheel  ex USA   ,  bought new  clutch cover &  plate from  Auto  Brake &  Clutch  . they   identified the  flywheel      & now have    fitted  a   new   slave cylinder but   . still   has  fairly long pedal travel   .


  4.   Well bit of a mission   turns out my 328Is  has a  nice  lightweight  solid  flywheel    mech   thinks its   origonal  .   The  E30   f wheel   & clutch press  plate   & new   clutch  disc     bolt up  BUt  its smaller  & ring gear teeth dont mesh with the starter  . So went to   Auto  Brake &  clutch   &  bought  new kit      but  its  for  dual mass  f wheel so  had to get  another  separate    plate as well .  replaced    release   bearing too .&  skimmed the  f wheel    On road now. But the  clutch is all at the bottom of the  pedal    ,mech     says  may have to  make a spacer  for the release  bearing to  engage it   earlier  .  This car is a  96 328 Is  sport   , second 1 ive had  but its  different    , has a spoiler at top of  rear wnidow & a  wing  ,   dual airbags  &  heated  seats  . different     climate controls     .  . Although   NZ new i wonder if its  a   Sth africa  assembled ?      Ill put the   325   kit inc new plate  on Tm & the   dual   mass  plate for the 328  ,   hope to off set  the costs 


  5. Well    the box is  out & its got a lovely  clean    solid  mass  flywheel      disc is worn  cover is ok  . Its done  just on 200 k &  NZ new  so it  would be origonal .    So the   mech is  going to locate a clutch plate or get it  remade  . Guess I should have waited  for the box to  come out before buying    solid  conversion kit  .  So much  forl 328s   ALL having dual mass   f wheel  .

Im in the process of renewing clutch on my  328 Is  , told all328 s  have dual mass flywheel   &  complete  replacement is around $4000 so bought a  E30   325 used    flywheel  &clutch  pressure  plate  &had  f wheel machined&  new   clutch disc . BUt  now  the box is out  found it has  a solid  flywheel &  its  bit larger than the 325  i bought   , so   wksp is trying to find me a new  disc  for it   although all supliers inssit they onl y  stock   dual mass kits     So   may not need this  & will be for sale 


  7. ^^^    Turns out its an after market  clutch  for  M43/M44   engine  Sachs  product  supplied by  Clutch Systems   flywheel   &pp   currently at the  engine reconditioners  getting refaced     ,   no  numbers on the disc    cheer                     sJust to add  the  old disc is  215  mm diameter  &  inner flywheel   srface is  220  mm diameter    is this standard size    for E40  E43   engines   ,   dont want to  geT  wrong   plate  & be stuck with it  .   cheers          (new price for  dual mass   f wheel&  clutch is over  $40000   !!!!)

  9. Where to get new  clutch  disc  for  my E36  328    coupe  .  The   stuffed   dual mass  flywheel is  being   swapped  over for  a  conventional  l i have  just got  C/W   pressure plate  . BNT say only have  the  disc for dual mass   type  which is different  doesnt have the anti vibration srings in it     yet wksp manual says   this model  had either  type  . 


  10.   Seems  BMW fitted  bothDMW  &  standard    cast   FW to  E36  s    any way of telling externally which  it has   ?   Certainly  put me off buying a car with DMF from all the    problems ive read about  it Ddid they  continue  it with the E46  ?


  11.   Friend   has offered me   97  a 328  IS    coupe  manual     , lovely  condition  but it has a stuffed  dual mass flywheel &  cost of repair almost  value of the car .   Can it be replaced with a standard   flywheel    ,  assuming could find a  used 1  ..


  12. Update the head is salvageable , was 6thou out of true & skim has trued it up & the softness was within limits , providing it doest get overhot agian . Now the cause , ALL the water holes (except the big main inlet ) were blocked by rust formation on the head gasket hole & eaten away under the head so it meant the pump was only cavitating & the water in the head eventually boiled off . This explains lack of circulation . Strange as always had castol anti freeze /inhibitor in it for last 5 years & replaced every 2 . No corrosion of the head or block no sign of it leaking between cylinders or oil gallery & piston tops ok . The gasket was origonal . Anyone ever seen this before ?

Malcolm, with all due respect your proposition that its a BMW fault that happens at 200,000k is unlikely, appreciate you may be frustrated but many of us have more than 200,000 k on the same engine . For you to have 4 various engines do it is highly unusual. I suggest it is sabotage from your landrover

    Actually got a classic range rover now done over 300 k , takes plenty of abiuse in the bush but just keeps going & can fix it with a cresent & screwdriver ...mmmm wionder what those supercharged mercs are like like the look of the CLK 230 its about the same power as Bm328 Time for a change ? .


  14. Well head is off & went to machinists for test & its warped & gone soft . This is 4th BMW to do this , started with 1980 323i then 82 635 CSI , 85 325i & now 96 328i . Yet i maintained them all fastiidously with good quality products . Seems to be once they reach the 200 K mark they have reached the end of life . No more BMWs for me .


  15. ^^^t Ive had it for 5 years regular serviced no additives just antifreeze & was a 1 owner . Mech now wonders if part of the old plastic rad tank has lodged in a water passage , told they go brittle with age the top hose connection broke off when I took origonal radiator out so guess its a possibility done 220K . See what today brings cheers

Well its got mech scrating his head too done Tk test & comp test ok ,problem is , just wont pump any water hot or cold out heater hose inlet or out of top rad hose with t stat in or out . he back flushed system from heater & block ok , brand new metal impeller pump , This is weird guess next step is to take head off yet motor runs fine .. no smoke or vapour .


  17. Ive bled it till the cows come home both cold & hot definatly circulation problem ran it last night without thermostat still did it . . . It isnt gradual it sits on midrange for most time then just goes up to red & its definatly very hot not circulating open bleeder & no water only steam & header tank only warm . guess next is new pump looks ok but ? The first time it happened I was driving & done 40k before it started


  18. can run it up to operatiing temp in the garage for about 15 minutes but soon as go for a drive after 10 km it seems fine then just shoots into the ted . ive replaced thermostat & housing & new radiator had water pump out & it looks & feels fine . I bled air out , compression test Ok no water in oil n or oil in water , no white smoke & engine runs fine . & aux fan only comes on breifly ,rad doesnt seem that hot & when i stop & open bleeder only get steam cant get water . this is wierd What next .


  19. Did they change them later to remote header tank on later models , I just bought new aftermarket rad for my 96 328 manual & its totally different wider & no header tank , mine looks same as 320 318 4 pots . so having a bit of a row with the seller about returning &replacement ?
