OK, have just looked up the master key and I definitely don't have one of those - do I have to order one? -

Sorry, crossed posts. @M3_Power I'm not sure what the master key is sorry - I was just given two IR remote keys, how can you tell which one is the master? Cheers -

Trouble programming IR keys for E46 316ti compact

OK, so I found some info for an E39 which states that the driver's door must be closed or it will prevent all further programming. The first time I tried it, I'm pretty sure the driver's door was open - so I guess I've locked it out if the E46 works the same way? Is there a way to get the car to programme new keys using the original key (which still locks/unlocks the car)? -

Thanks heaps for the reply but I'm still having trouble sorry - I tried this: Insert key and turn to position 1 Remove key Simultaneously hold the unlock button for 15sec and press the lock button 3 times within 5sec After letting go of the unlock button pause and press the unlock button once Do you have to hold the unlock key for 15sec or more then 15sec - maybe I'm holding it down for too long? When I release the unlock key (after pressing the lock key 3 times) the light blinks and if I then press the unlock key again, nothing happens. Do I have to pause longer until the blinks stop after releasing the unlock button maybe? Sorry if this is easy but I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong. -
Hi There, I've replaced the batteries in one of my keys and am trying to programme it using the various guides I've found but am having no luck. This is the procedure I've tried: Insert key and turn to position 1 Remove key Simultaneously hold the unlock button for 15sec and press the lock button 3 times within 5sec After letting go of the unlock button the doors should lock and unlock to confirm it’s programmed Immediately follow the same procedure for all keys until all are programmed But instead of the doors locking/unlocking after step 4, the LED on the key starts flashing and the key doesn't work - I can confirm that both keys start the car. I can't find a manual for this car so the info I have may be incorrect - can anyone see what I'm doing wrong? Any pointers in the right direction would be much appreciated. Cheers Ben

BTW, I saw this excellent RF conversion post: http://bimmersport.co.nz/topic/50157-diy-e46-retrofit-infrared-to-radio-frequency-remote-control/ Will think about that in the future as well!

Thanks for the replies, @Rubix - yes, I saw those on TradeMe and have been wondering about them but the more I research, the more I realise the Compact M Body kit is actually fairly rare (even though I've seen plenty on recent imports). @tim 325 - those look to be what I currently have (although the Compact versions). The car I have is in great condition (besides the paint) with low miles so plan on keeping it for the next 5-6 years which means it's worth spending now to get the body sorted - it's also a company car so everything is claimable. Will contact some wreckers before looking at a couple of overseas options where I'm sure the shipping will be eye watering! Cheers and thanks heaps for the replies. Ben

Hey Allan, Thanks heaps for the reply - good advice. I'll do some more research before buying - are your side skirts standard or the M Sport versions? And do you know of anyone that might have a kit for compacts? Ideally I'd like Topaz Metallic Blue but I have to re-paint the current bumpers so I'm OK with painting new ones. Cheers Ben

Hi There, I have a Japanese imported ti compact (with only 12,000kms) but after two years, the clear coat on the bumpers is peeling off so I'm looking at various options including upgrading to the M-Tech bumpers/body kit. Obviously the front and rear bumpers are specific to the Compacts but does anyone know if side skirts from M-Tech sedans/coupes will also fit the Compacts? As far as I can tell, almost everything up until the rear wheels is identical (besides the front bumper and bonnet). It also looks like I need the following parts to switch the rear bumpers as well: Guide Left: 51127894799 Guide Right: 51127894800 Sorry if this is obvious but there's not as much info around for the Compacts - any help or info would be much appreciated Cheers Ben
