  1. Hi All,

I have two cars (an E46 race car and an E30 road car) that I am wanting to get painted in the next few months.
Both cars will be stripped down (E46 is just a shell and E30 will have all lights, trim, bumpers, glass, interior etc... removed) and both cars will be getting a complete colour change and have very straight bodys. The plan at this stage is to paint the E46 Alpine White 2 and the E30 Lime Rock Grey. I'm looking for recommendations and rough costs for car painters in the Auckland region - Happy to do some of the prep work my self to save costs but I understand some body shops don't like this.

    Thanks in advance.

  2. Little bit of progress made recently - Paul has had the car up on the rotisserie and has stripped the underside, the rear guards have been 'radiused' to accept the wide body rear fenders and the air jack mounts have been installed. Next on the list is to mount the fuel cell, engine and gearbox before painting the floor.

Awesome build Shaun!! Can't wait to see it finished and racing.

do you know where your old WTCC car ended up, haven't seen itn around for a long time?

    Thanks Jon! Me too!

I sold it to Andrew Mackenzie and now its owned by Aaron Black in Dunedin

  4. We're going to run the same wide body and splitter as the WTCC car as well as centre lock hubs and 270 slicks so Paul hung the fender on the car and test fitted a wheel he had lying around with spacers to emulate the centre lock adaptors - It looks like it should be a perfect fit once we align the car and add some camber. Paul also started to fabricate some of the carbon panels we are going to be using starting with the roof. In other news I managed to pick up a 6 speed sequential Quaife gearbox as well as a M3 subframe and diff which is currently being built by Kayne Barrie Motorsport.

  5. The car came back from the cage builder a few days ago and is looking great. I still had the FIA Homologation papers from my WTCC car so managed to replicate the cage exactly (we added in some rear subframe bracing due to the HP/TQ we will be running and the fact that this is a weak point in the E46). We also managed to test fit the seat, pedal box, carbon dash and steering column - I'm 6'2" and should be sitting in line with the B pillar.

  6. Hi all,

Im currently building an E46 to race in the North Island endurance series and thought it may be a good idea to document it here.
My plan is to build a 'replica' of a WTCC car I had a few years ago but with the engine, gearbox and brakes from a V8 Super Tourer creating an unholy love child of two of my old race cars.

I'm hoping to have the car weighing around 1,200KG and putting down about 650HP - for reference a standard Super Tourer is around 1,440KG and 550HP.

Below are a few pictures of both my WTCC car and Super Tourer as well as a rendering of what the final car could look like (Excuse the poor quality).

  7. Hi Guys,

    Thanks for the info!
Sounds like I'm on the hunt for a manual conversion and a donor car!

Exhaust I used an M44 header and had no clearance issues around the steering (manual steering for me).  This will be easier to find than M42is manifold and looks like it might work better too (not tested).

My engine has ITBs off an MR2, with wasted spark ignition and a Link computer.  I made a custom wiring harness for the Link  by hacking up an old M40 e30 harness to tie into the car as plug and play (I wanted to be able to put the old engine back).  If you need help with the pin-outs for the C101 etc I have that info somewhere.  It was pretty easy but time consuming.

If i could give some advice it is make absolutely sure you invest the time to do the wiring to a really decent standard so you don't have to chase hard to find faults in the future.  My car has been raced like this for three years and I have had no issues at all.  I have raced cars and boats and proper wiring is critical for reliability (and sanity).

The M44 header sounds like a great option.

Sounds like a beasty little motor!

I'll definitely take my my time on the wiring - electrical gremlins have left me on the side of the track more than a few times!

If you haven't already seen my thread have a look, It should cover most of the general stuff. I would try and find an M40 manual conversion first it will make it much easier, then just find and m42 from an auto.

I used the 318is manifold as I knew it would fit 100% like OEM, I have also heard that that the M44 will fit but I have never seen photos of it installed.

This is the guide I used for COP http://bmwz3diys.weebly.com/coil-on-plug-conversion.html, I may also have a spare COP bracket for cheap.

Your stock diff will work but RPMs will be higher, the ratio you need will depend on the gearbox you go with, a 4.1 is  good with a E30 m40 gearbox. AFM to MAF is not going to happen unless you go aftermarket ECU. Most M40 flywheels are already single mass and will install without modification.

I would look for a crashed car from turners or manheim. Even running a driving 318ti's are worth bugger all.

Thanks for the link it will definitely come in handy! Sounds like M40s with ticky tappets are not uncommon.

If you do have a COP bracket for sale that would be great!
I'll stick with the AFM in that case but good to know about the M40 flywheel!

I'm keeping an eye on the auction sites - hopefully something pops up!

    Cheers,
    Shaun

  8. Hi All,

This will be a strictly street car/bit of fun. My racing calendar is looking pretty full for this season!

I'm using Adobe Illustrator CC to draw these up - It's great for vector Illustrations but is quite expensive and takes a bit to learn.

I love both the B&H livery and all the art cars (the Warhol M1 would be my pic!) but I think seeing that the body/paint are in such good nick sticking with the blue base may be the easiest option!

    Cheers.

  9. Hi all,

I’ve recently acquired a Lapisblau (navy blue) E30 as a bit of a project. I’m looking to sign write it with a (preferably period correct) livery and would like opinions on what everyone thinks looks best! Cheers!

P.S I’m leaning towards the M1 Pro-car inspired Hugo Boss Livery.

    Cheers,
    Shaun.
