  1. Thanks all.  I ended up with the Provident one from the dealer.  I have 4yrs coverage in total.  It's an interesting set up as the dealer gave me 1yr and this 3yr one starts when that one ends.  So the 1 year could possibly be like a trial.  If they wrongfully fail to payout in my first year, then I will try my best to have the other 3yr contract which hasn't started, to be cancelled (maybe that is futile but could get a lawyer mate involved).  I have gone through the fine print so I don't get caught out.  Just had a reputable euro shop do full service, the works, and will have all of the policies requirements signed off in the booklet for this service and keep invoices.

  2. The only one I see is on ebay:

$345 !?  Does anyone know of a parts dealer that is more reasonable?  Another option would be the GPS method but having trouble finding much there as well.

Usually once a repair has taken place, all faults codes are cleared so they can ensure it's been fixed. So anything in the memory currently will have occurred since. It records the mileage it occurred, and how often.

Who is your warranty with and how long have you had it for?

Dealer gave me 12 months and I am looking at an additional 24 or 36 (2010 120i E88), but I see mixed reviews over these warranties and sometimes people having trouble getting paid out, but dealer seems pretty solid so far and seems they'll stand by their warranty.  They are a main dealer here in Dunedin, not a used car dealer, and ppl rate them highly.  I'm discussing the car history with them now.

  4. I'm looking into this due to ppl grumbling about N43 engine reliability so am looking to get a 2-3yr warranty on a 120i 2010 w/47,000 kms.  Wondering if many here have extended warranties and are happy.  Have your claims on any major N43 breakdowns been met satisfactory?

dealer is offering 24-36 month (on top of my 12 months at purchase) for $1695-$1895 (underwritten by provident insurance) and excess of $400, unlim kms

based on internet discussion of this engine, many things might need work costing a huge amount (new injectors, timing chain blowout, etc).  So I feel it would be crazy not to go for this.  Assuming what major faults I encounter will be honoured by said warranty.

I wouldn't mind hearing from some N43 owners who have had very little trouble, because the more I go online the more paranoid I get.  At present car runs great.  I don't drive the car hard, very chill with it and I plan on maintaining it to a high level.  Main use is to work and back (10mins each way) and the odd errand.  Is it possible those having huge problems are racing around and pushing this engine super hard?  If well maintained and baby'd are they still faulty as hell?

Well you can get Goodyear Eagle F1 Directional 5 instead for $725.

Triplemax's are probably fine for the average person especially compared with your average Chinese etc crap, but depends on what your expectations in regards to performance and tire life are. I say the majority here favor performance and would spend the few hundred extra.

Top of my list so far...

  6. Size of current tyres: 205/55 R16

I see no reason to use a different size.  I bought the E88 2nd hand so it has a mix of tyres on it, 2 of them are cheap crap.  Other 2 are older, so am looking to get 4 new tyres.  Run flats look insanely expensive so I will pass on that + I have road side assistance.  But maybe I will get a little donut wheel for the boot.

    priorities:

    comfy daily drivers

    grip

    good in wet

    quiet on motorway

I'm trying to find a good deal, hate to spend too much but want solid quality tyres

also open to suggestions on where to go (dunedin), bridgestone, tony's, beurepairs, etc ?

    Cheers!

  7. Hey, dealer has given me 1 yr warranty.  But I can tack on additional warranty, was thinking of getting the 36month, unlimited kms.  They're a main official euro dealer in Dunedin, they're service has been second to none so far.  I feel like these guys will look after me and the peace of mind of having 4yrs all up is tempting.  deals below:

24 month warranty is $1695.00 and 36 months is $1895.00. These give you unlimited km’s and have a maximum claim limit of $10,000 per claim.

You can get 24 month warranty $1495.00 and 36 months $1695.00, unlimited km’s with a $5000 claim limit

Or am I better to just go 3rd party?  My concerns with 3rd party are, dealing with claims etc vs. just towing it to the dealer and they sort it out.

**edit this is in New Zealand so NZD = 1200 USD

read up on the N43 engine, not the greatest engine from BMW but given the mileage you do per year it should be alright.

Also, dont ever think that 20,000km service interval is good enough. stick to a 8,000-10,000km routine and get it scanned for fault codes etc.

1 year warranty is nice but if you are planning to keep it a long time I wouldnt rely on it and maintain it best as possible. or keep it for a year then sell it

    Cheers!

Nice pickup... it's always nice when you're satisfied with  purchase. ?

Unless you have the service history it might be a good idea to take it to an independent BMW specialist (there are Dunedin members here that will be able to provide recommendations) for a full inspection and service... things to consider will be brakes (easy inspection), oil and filter (almost mandatory), cooling system check and flush/replace coolant, power steering check, air filter check (probably replace), code reading (for any hidden faults), check plugs and leads (probably fine)... probably some other basics I've missed.

    Oh, and welcome!

Thanks!  I'll ask in the forums for some Dunedin recommendations :)

  10. Hi all,

I found this gem and could not resist.  2010 and it's near show room mint with only 47,000kms.  It drives like a dream.

The engine bay is also spotless, looks literally brand new.

Whole car seems lightly used and garaged.

So, my only concerns now are preventative maintenance.  I don't want anything to bite me in the arse.  At 47,000 kms is there anything to worry about much yet?  The dealer gave me a 12 month warranty as well.  I picked it up for just under 14k which considering the new like condition felt a good deal.  The ragtop is also flawless and looks new, and  I am heading to supercheap auto today to investigate some ragtop treatments to keep it UV and water protected.

I notice the car has a clear wrap around the bottom edges and 1/3 front bonnet (what is that wrap called?), one spot is slightly bubbled so curious who does these wraps and where I can get it mended in Dunedin.

For the most part it's a daily driver, my work is only 7mins drive + the odd errands.  I doubt I'll put more than 5-8,000kms a year.

I'm thinking to be safe, I should have a full service done on it at the dealer?

    Cheers!
