You need NCS Expert and a k+dcan cable, then you have to change the Vehicle Order to include  644. It's pretty easy to do once you know how to use it. It's also useful for coding other features into your car as well. You can download NCS Expert for free. It's part of the BMW Standard Tools. Here's the link.

All this sounds WAY above what I am capable of sadly. I wouldn't even know where to begin with parts to purchase. Might be easier and safer for me to try  an AUX bluetooth adapter and hope for the best. The use of steering wheel buttons would be nice though.

  2. Thanks for the outline! that's actually super helpful. I think I'm going to run a cheap aux-bluetooth dongle adapter for a while and see how it goes.

That link you posted is awesome but like most of the DIY posts I've seen, that car doesn't have Idrive. I was wondering if there's an easyish way to link into the Idrive system to enable bluetooth handsfree.

It seems that its not super straightforward and a aux dongle may be the way to go.

    Thanks for the info!

Might do this to mine, is it easy to ensure a nice gloss black finish?

Maybe I'll just pay a body shop to do it, should be a simple job for them.

If you take the grills out and take them to a shop I'm sure they would do a reasonable cheap and good job of it. But this is a very doable DIY job. there will be heaps of YouTube vids on how to get a nice gloss black finish on plastic

  4. I have recently bought a 2007 e91 325i with idrive.
The speakers work fine and I can plug into the aux cord in the centre console to play music, however I can't use handsfree that way and I have to physically plug my phone in every time I get in the car. I am wondering what options are out there for upgrading to a bluetooth system. I have seen upgrades from just a bluetooth AUX-USB plug in to people doing full apple play installs. Has anyone done anything similar or have advice for what I should do? I'm basically interested in being able to play my music/make phone calls without having to plug my phone in.
    Thanks in advance!

I've attached a photo of my dash because it seems that every vid I watch has a different dash setup

i ordered some off aliexpress for $45 shipped. gloss black. will post photos when it arrives.

at that price its not even worth the hassle of painting them imo

yeah fair enough! I probably would've done the same but my budget was $0 and I had paint lying around. Hope shipping doesn't take too long!

No unfortunately. That would most likely be the fob itself or broken wires in the tailgate. The wiring for the radio receiver for the central locking runs right next to the tailgate hinge in a corrugated rubber boot and flexes everytime the tailgate is opened and then ends up breaking the wires over time. It can also effect the number plate lights and other lights in the tailgate.  Do both keys not work?

ahh bummer. yeah both fobs are not working. I've replaced the batteries in both. still nothing. This seems like a bigger job than getting a new battery.

No worries. I think the issue is caused by the battery being in poor condition. Does the clock in the car keep resetting? If so i would replace the battery.

Yeah actually it does. Would that explain why my key fob doesn't unlock my doors too? please say yes haha

Have had this issue before on Jap imports that have been converted to NZ. Try navigating to the language selection in the idrive and select English UK. Has worked for me. Let us know if it works.

So I actually disconnected the battery and left it for 30 min or so. reconnected and the issue went away. however the next time I turned the car on the issue came back.

I have just now done as you said and changed the language to English UK and the issue resolved itself immediately. Thanks!

Hopefully this isn't another short term fix.

    Appreciate the advice
    Thanks heaps.

  9. Hi,
My Idrive system seems to be playing up and the menus are all different to what they are meant to be like. When I first start the car the menu looks normal with the labels saying "climate, Entertainment, Navigation and Communication" but within a few seconds it changes to say "AC, AV, NAVI, and TEL". this wouldn't normally upset me but when I select one of these options the follow on screens aren't as they are meant to be either. They have limited options compared to normal and won't let me select some things.

I have tried rebooting the drive system and it goes back to normal for a few seconds before reverting to this.

Any ideas on what I should be doing?

    Thanks
