  1. ok spent days trying to sort out the door - have pushed, pulled and prodded everything i can see, sprayed lube. Glenn suggested pulling off the external trim across the window and trying to push the lever the external door handle works on - no joy there.

Anyone got any other ideas short of cutting the door in half?

  2. On Thursday night my wife took her car shopping - 2003 525i Motorsport, drove home and the drivers door would not open. Not from inside or outside. Have tried everything - key, remote centre console lock buttons, double pulling internal handle etc... The lock button would move with the remote and key. Sometimes it would automatically go back down, but often it would stay up.

Took it to local BMW mechanic who did a quick look at it and said it would be the actuator. They were too busy to do anything about it, and my wife got impatient .... they did not fix it.

I read a heap of forums and punched a smallish hole in the door trim and proceeded to destroy the actuator. The door would still not release. More google and forums. Found you can remove the airbag panel, airbag and so forth and then pry off the actuator. (wish i saw this before I put a hole in the trim)

So the actuator is off, but i still can't get the door to release. There is a flat hook that will pivot forward inside/on the lock mechanism that would have been inside the actuator, but that does not seem to do anything either. If I push the door lock button down it releases when i pull the inside handle. The outside handle does not seem to have any resistance other than the spring - like it is not engaging. I guess this is double locked??

Anyone know what else I can try???????????

  3. Hi martyn,

thanks for your imput, but we don't have a sunroof in this one, (do in my E38) so i will check the drains in that one.

Thanks glenn, sorry checked back too late to catch you. May chase you up on Monday, depending how busy i am?????? I think it was you i got to have a listen to the trans noise in my E38 735I.

  4. Hi all,

We have had our 2003 525I for a couple of months and have just noticed that the footwell behind the drivers seat (and to a lesser degree the other side) has heaps of water in the carpet.

I can't see where it might be coming in. The sides of the footwell seem to be dry.

I vac'd it out the other day and got about 2 cups of water out of there.

Anyone had this before? What is the solution?

  5. Hi all

Just bought my 2001 E38 a couple of weeks ago. I really like the wheels that came on it (fresh jap import), i have seen a few online that are similar, but not the same. tyres are 275 x 35 x 19 rear and 255 x 30 x 19 on front.

    1) wondering what they are (rims)???

    2) looking for something very similar for my wifes E39 525I Motorsport (really want chrome finish). She currently has M sport wheels 17".

    3) Also looking for definitive advice. I bought my car from a dealer, the tyres are perishing (fine cracks between the tread). Should it have passed a WOF. is the car yard obligated to replace them?

It's a shame because they have plenty of tread left, though they are wearing on the inside edge.

    4) what $$$ would I be looking for to replace the tyres?

  6. Hey just noticed that the tyres have some fine cracks (perishing) between the tread.

Just a question - should that have passed a WOF?

I just bought the car - fresh import

    It has low profiles 275 x 35 x 19's on the back

    and 245 x 30 x 19's on the front

The tyres have quite a bit of tread on them - and i am sure they will not be cheap to replace. Just wondering if i should go back to the yard and demand they replace them.

  7. Hi I have seen a lot of information about changing the OEM nav/cd changers etc. It's all a bit expensive for what it is. I have a HTC HD2 phone (4.3" screen) that does navigation/mp3/phone etc.

One problem i have is the only oem power source is the lighter that is half way down the console. So running power to my screen mounted phone holder and visor mounted uniden bluetooth unit looks untidy and interferes with dash buttons (gets in the way).

I also want to run the audio out of my phone (has a 3.5mm out) to the sound system.

Has anyone got some bright ideas about putting in some unobtrusive power jacks. Was thinking maybe using 3.5mm mono sockets, and a right angle male? What about where to source the power from?

I have a 2001 e38 735I with sunroof. It does have an OEM phone kit (but no phone).

  8. Anyone got one of these or have an opinion on what they are like to live with/drive every day?

Will this work with the OBC? I understand that the display in an E38 (and all the rest) is just a display, and a tape deck for 1980???

I guess it depends on on the controls.

If you remove the standard BMW audio "head unit" do you still have access to that info on the cluster?

  9. Hi all, been a member for a short while. Bought an E39 525I motorsport a few months back and just bought a 2001 E38 735I this week. Someone ran up the back on my Legnum VR4 last week on the Southern Motorway and wrote that off.

Really surprised that it does not have 3 shoulder belts in the back or easy to setup child restraint bolts! when they are sold as big family cars. See below for picture of my new car.

Now my wife want wheels like mine instead of the Motorsport ones. Not 100% sure what my wheels are, but i really like them. Are the wheels interchangable between E38 and E39?

Who would you reccomend in Auckland for tints?
