Head alone should work on both M50B20 and M52B20 engines - valves are 6 mm diameter, VANOS inlet cam should fit, VANOS actuation bolts onto front of head.

Check coolant temperature sensor as well - located on thermostat housing. Resistance should be 2100 - 2900 ohms when cold, dropping to 270 - 400 ohms when warm.

Fixed a similar problem on my 320.
