LEAKY WATER PUMP

Recommended Posts

As a BMW newbie I am slightly green in these matters.

But I have just purchased a '90 320 6cyl which had been stood unused for a while, before picking up the original owner started her up and water came flooding out of the waterpump area.

He suggests that there is a seal that can perish if unused causing it to fail.

a. Is this true? If yes where will I get a replacement seal?

b. If not where in the Glenfield area will I be able to get a new waterpump or refurbed item that is not going to break the bank, as I also need a number of other items.

The waterpump is one of those items on the e30 that is best replaced if showing any signs of problems. It would be false economy to just replace a seal as the pumps themselves are not that expensive and once replaced will give you piece of mind. While you or your mechanic are doing it, replace the cam belt at the same time.

The waterpump has to come out to replace the seal , so replace the pump.

On my E36 I paid $80.00 for a new one. [ an E30 shoulb be similar ]

Ring Muzza's waterpumps on Neilson st , Onehunga [ he's one of the best around, pricewise ]\

Thanks Guys

Is the cam belt & tensioner a Repco or SuperCheap item or more specialist?

Not sure if you can get the tensioner from repco - but if so it should be fine as the cambelt change intervals are not large. Ditto for the cambelt.
