hotwire 352 Report post Posted August 23, 2008 Unless you connected wrong then you really shouldn't have done any damage. What fuses did you check? Has the alternator got a battery supply to it? If not it will probably have a blown main fuse. The systems are fairly well protected now days to avoid damage from incorrect polarity.
bezzal 1 Report post Posted August 23, 2008 (edited) My car has sticker saying to after jump starting, turn the rear demister on, and the headlights on before disconnecting. I presume this allows it not to suddenly go from a high to low load... Car is E36 328i Sounds like you might have damaged something. Rich. ducatiss 1 Report post Posted August 24, 2008 The balance of probability would suggest that you have indeed damaged something due to jump starting the nissan (bloody nissans :-) unless by some coincidence the fault just appeared straight after. If you followed all the precautions in the handbook and didnt mess something up it would be unlikely to damage anything (note I said unlikely - not impossible) If the car is running ok and just not charging, it would appear to be the alternator. Your best bet would be to take the car in to a BMW specialist who can diagnose the fault for you.
j_tomo 0 Report post Posted August 24, 2008 ive got the alternator out at the moment- not an easy task evry thing was hooked up fine in the correct procedure but the nissan was dead flat, once the last cable was conected the beema bogged down with the extra load and the cables i used wernt the spike protection type also what one of our sponsors do the best deals on parts? while ive got the alt out ill replace both belts, idlers and water pump ill go check the small wire coming off the alt for power i checked all the fuses under the bonnet, found a semi crook one for the passenger air bag??? (one of the legs wer loose and lost continuity when wiggled) ill keep ya's updated lesson learnt- jump start cars with batterys and not beemers!!!!!! melowpuf 19 Report post Posted August 24, 2008 lesson learnt- jump start cars with batterys and not beemers!!!!!! heh golly you people have bad luck. I've jump started a bulldozer, a massey fergusson tractor, countless POS Nissans, 4wds other BMW's and lots of farm machinery with the trusty old E34. I had to use old faithful this morning after a week and a half of sitting in the driveway unused crossed my fingers that the battery would crank over.. first pop as usuall, then straight around the back to jump start the Mitsi Pajero, some people still dont know how to turn headlights off at night. SELL your e36 and buy an E34 then you can jump start almost anything your heart desires. They just don't build them how they used to anymore.
