E 39 % series - Front Brake (?) Shudder

Recommended Posts

Hi,

Mine is a 2002 E39 ex Singapore. Good car, and with now 64,000ks. I have a shudder in the front when under braking. I seem to recall reading somewhere that this is caused by worn bushes as opposed to brake disc/balancing or whatever.

Can anyone advise me further please??

Thanks heaps

Regards

Ray

Ray,

Can be suspension parts but at that milage I would say unlikely.

Mine has similar Ks (nearly 70 & genuine) & I had the same problem at around 60K where I had to replace the front discs. They were shuddering & were grooved to deeply to machine.

I priced genuine but fitted aftermarket as they were 1/2 the price - figuring that if genuine give only 60k ish then I would take a punt on aftermarket. So far so good.

Hmmm - a shudder in the front under brakes always makes me think about warped discs first up. Get them looked at by a brake specialist. If they are only slightly warped, they may be able machine it out.

You've possibly caught the "shimmy".

Can be due to a variety of issues but I worked through the following steps:

1. front and rear wheel balance and alignment

2. replace front thrust arm bushes

3. replace front discs and pads

Read this thread - "540 wheel issues" posted by MattA in Technical>Maintenance

or might just as easily be poor spec Singapore tyres
