deeveus 81 Report post Posted August 31, 2008 Just starting some inquiries but has anyone fitted a towbar to an X5 here here before? Have been quoted $489+GST for the towbar & wasn't sure if there was anything else that needed to be done to the vehicles computer?

Have been quoted $489+GST for the towbar & wasn't sure if there was anything else that needed to be done to the vehicles computer? $489 + GST is a pretty good price - I was quoted $1500 for my E46 (at the stealership)! The E46 needs a wiring module to interface the computer with the extra electrical load, and I believe it also turns off the parking sensors when a trailer is connected. I would expect the X5 to require a similar setup.
greenday-rulz21 6 Report post Posted September 2, 2008 Theres one on trade me atm. But you've probably got our eye on that. Genuine BMW NZ issue, then you would only need the electrical module. PM Jochen or Hotwire.
kiwi535 538 Report post Posted September 2, 2008 i think you will find the module is more than the towbar...
elmarco 56 Report post Posted September 2, 2008 I was quoted $156 + GST a while back for the wiring module (admittedly for an E46) - so not crazy pricing.
deeveus 81 Report post Posted September 2, 2008 Yeah that guy wants too much for that towbar... Crazy seing its 2nd hand & he wants more for that than a brand new one. Being BMW Genuine doesn't mean a shite of difference, they still tow the same.
elmarco 56 Report post Posted September 2, 2008 Yeah they still tow the same... Just make sure they do make use of the factory mounting points (normally in the chassis rail I think) and you can't go wrong. I have seen some that just bolt up under the spare wheel well and will end up folding the wheel well up and doing untold damage to the car.

Nope, genuine BMW is much better quality I've seen both: Best Bars: strong, painted, can easily rust, permanent fixture, non-removable, limits ground clearance (had issues on my car) BMW genuine: better quality finish, MUCH more resistant to rust, removable so it gets protected when not being used, and better quality fitting to the vehicle You get what you pay for..... Anyone who mounts a towbar to a spare wheel well should have their licence revoked. That is dangerous and criminal in my opinion. No strength whatsoever, not authorised by the factory, would never pass a vehicle check (at least in my current country of residence)
