E30 LSD Spacer?

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,

So yesterday went to a reputable BMW specialist who checked my car over pre-warrant and he said there is play from the drive shaft to the diff. So if you were to move the driveshaft back and forwards towards the front and back of the car there was some play at the diff end. The LSD diff in it was rebuilt not too long ago from a previous owner(s) but he said if I didn't sort it I would start snapping CV's or destroy the gold plated diff that is in there now :( from visual measurement, there is about 3-4mm of play at this point.

He said a small metal spacer can be made to shim out the pinion gear? (no expert with diffs) to stop the play and normal service can be resumed. Have been put on to a guy who sort it out for me, but wondered if others had experienced this first and who they took it to, to sort it out and approx. cost to fix.

Any help is appreciated.

Cheers, Nathan

Standard front washer/spacer in the front of the diff is a crush washer, crushes on installation and sets the gap according to the applied torque. If it crushes further on wear, then you get the play you've found.

A race setup usually uses a fixed shim, which is a solid washer and won't crush. You need someone to do this properly, if in Auckland I'd reccommend Kayne Barrie, you could give him a call, or talk to Paul Olson at interpart, he'll know who can do in Wellington.

Cost can be up to $7 to 800, depending on what you get done, may be a lot less if you only get the front done?

Just to add an update to this, went to see Paul and he said to wait till it goes bang ;)

Putting the spacer in will require a rebuild regardless so will wait till it breaks then do a full re-build then.

Sadly no more 6k clutch drops for me though in the mean time, but the last time I did that I destroyed the driveshaft, so its a blessing in disguise.
