Diff internals?

Recommended Posts

Hi,

Does anyone know how inter-changable medium case diff internals are?

I have a LSD medium case diff (is a crap ratio 2.93).

Figured that if I get another medium case diff (in a nice ratio)I could simply swap the open diff centre with the lsd centre, there by keeping the same crown and pinion together in their original case. I would also swap the output flanges and shafts to keep the bearings and races paired as original.

Has anyone done this or have any info that may be useful.

cheers Matt

That should cover everything.

Might pay to check the breakaway torque before you go to the effort of swapping internals and find the LSD is shagged and needs a rebuild.

The LSD clutches & shims are NLA from BMW so you'll need custom made plates & shims, GAC in chch have these made but are $$$.

Thanks Glen,

Not as straight forward as I had hoped but then it never is..

Might be best if I get someone with the correct tools and skills to do it looks a bit outside of my level of mechanical experience.

cheers Matt

No worries.

Mechanically it is easy, but doing it right it the hard part, side load & pinnion depth, hrmmm, OK.

Shouldn't cost much to get the internal swapped over, but as I said check the LSD out first otherwise it's a waste of $$$ if you have to pull it apart again to rebuild the LSD.
