danutt 4 Report post Posted October 3, 2006 putting a new camshaft with slightly more lift and duration(as much as stock ecu can handle ) its going into a e30 318i m40 motor ive had the tappet cover off and had a look and i can see some of the cam is worn but not very bad also the valves clearances are hydrolic and dont have anywhere to set them so i presume they set themselves im going to do the job myself as i have the tools so if anyone has links, knowledge etc on how to go about changing the camshaft and what to do before taking the old one out(TDC etc) please post some info thankyou Quote Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
Silver Fox 43 Report post Posted October 4, 2006 Hi, just rebuilt my M40, make sure you identify the marks when you take the front apart, easy to get the cam off, replace the cam seal on the front when replacing the cam shaft. The worst is getting all the front off the motor, the fan, water pump etc, so you can get to the cambelt tensioner to release it to get the belt off. be a good time to change it as well for the cost of the belt? Read and soak up, click on arrow at top to go to next page, there are 5 pages. You don't need to take the fan off separately, you can just use a 10 mm spanner and take the 4 screws off from the pulley behind the fan, slip the pulley foward to the fan and carefully take the 4 water pump screws out. There are 2 threaded holes on the pump, one at the top and one at the bottom, you have to carefully start 2 of the screws you have just taken out in these holes and slowly tighten, try to tighten the top and the bottom equally and you should find the pump slowly comes out. Take care not to over tighten any of the screws in the head as it is aluminium and you can strip easily if you overtighten. Once you have the water pump out you take the bottom pulley off, and then the bottom cover plate, and it's all in front of you, put back in reverse order.
