bamgmz 0 Report post Posted December 7, 2006 Hey guys, First post here...sorry for the noob question and yes I have tried the search button. Just got me a 318iS to start off with...and loving it! First question is, how do you know if you have a M42 or M44 engine? I've read somewhere that 1996 above, its an M44? but apparently BMW started making them mid 1996? Looking forward to knowing everyone here Thanks
318isCoupe 0 Report post Posted December 7, 2006 Apparently some 1995's have an M44.. which I didn't think was the case. There's not really much difference anyway, there's more aftermarket parts around for the M42 though..

318isCoupe 0 Report post Posted December 7, 2006 According to that site.. both the M42/M44 engines were produced from Febuary 1995. With the M44 replacing the M42 completely at a later point. Car looks good! manual or auto? Clear indicator's and corners make such a difference.

318isCoupe 0 Report post Posted December 7, 2006 IMO. Best option for boosting an M42/M44.. http://www.downingatlanta.com/da_superchargers_info_new.htm Price is currently $3,399 USD, they claim 200-210hp out of an M42. More if you've done the exhaust right. I mean.. you won't go smoking Evo's or anything.. But you're less likely to get the beatdown from a 15 year old in an FXGT.. and you'll possibly even be able to chirp the rear tyres in anger.
