For this money you might be better to get an e30 M325i, especially as e30s are far more of a performance car. However, if you like the looks of the e36, then a manual 325i might be just the ticket! B. 318i had a timing profile gasket failure problem - Early other e36 had the ole subframe issues (not really a biggie) someone want to post that buyers guide to esirtysix? But the early cars in the new model year are always that way... things that don't make themselves known in testing (and BMW don't skimp on pre-production testing...) still, it's bottom dollar for a newish looking bimmer that has a decent amount of power coupled with a man...
