ED1RTY 2 Report post Posted March 4, 2007 Anyone still reconditioning Gauge clusters? My rev counter went on me in the weekend. Either that or anything I can look at that might be effecting this? (Bearing in mind all the rest of the cluster works) Ie where does the counter get its reading from?? Holla Cheers Chris
ED1RTY 2 Report post Posted March 5, 2007 Okay, i took the VDO out and opened it up. doesn't look like theres any corrosion on the boards and the batteries havn't exploded. The rev counter light used to come on and off intermittently when i had my headlights on and i never thought anything of it. Now the thing doesnt go at all. What wires should i be looking for that read the revs? im guessing it would go to the gearbox?? Someone please help!!
kerrynzl 3 Report post Posted March 5, 2007 I assume you're talking 'aftermarket' Tacho here [the shiftlight clue] All aftermarket rev counting devices [Tachometers, Limiters,Shift lights etc] have 3 main wires Red = Switchable power [ignition] Black = Earth Green = Negative side of coil [signal] White = to instrument lights [Tachos sometimes have a 4th wire] Wire to Gearbox??? I assume you meant Flywheel ps. the above works commonly with single coil ignitions
Silver Fox 43 Report post Posted March 5, 2007 (edited) Hi, the m40's take the reading from a sparkplug lead, would expect the M20's to do the same? If so its a small coil wrapped around one of the sparkplug leads with a wire which goes around the front of the motor and connects to the wiring loom under the intake manifold. possibly come unplugged at that point? See attached link. http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?mo...hg=12&fg=05 Edited March 5, 2007 by Silver Fox

will 169 Report post Posted March 5, 2007 You have a pre-f/l 320 motor with dizzy down the side of the block, right Chris? Can't remember right now what you had.. The older 320 motor didn't have the revcounter pickup on the HT lead like the later ones have, it gets it's signal from the control box I think. Will check for you. I have had a couple of rev-counters die on me before, may just be the gauge itself. The light working intermittantly wouldn't have had anything to do with the rev counter, it is on the same circuit as the speedo light. Will

The light seems to f**k with me whenever i do oil changes etc. Just randomly comes on when i bump a wire (dont know what wire ) not worried about that. Just want to know my revs! Checked the guage Will, it works in my parts car, started it up with the VDO from my car and it was sweet. Must be the pickup somewhere. There are alot of brittle wires in my engine bay, i wouldnt be surprised if one had snapped"?!

will 169 Report post Posted March 5, 2007 Chris, the best I can make out is the revcounter wire is a black wire in the blue plug that goes to the instrument cluster. This connects to the main engine harness plug via terminal 9. I assume it then would connect to the ignition box to get the signal to fire the revcounter. So, the best I can do for now is get you to check the wires from the main engine loom plug, paying particular attention to pin 9 and see if all is ok there. The only other wire that might do this is a yellow/white wire that goes to terminal 8, but I think that controls the economy meter. Will see if I can dig up any more.
