"Brake light circuit failure" - What does this mean?

Recommended Posts

Does it mean I need a new fuse, or is it something more terminal?

The brake lights are all still working fine, but this message comes on whenever the car is running. Any ideas on how to cure this?

Thanks

Did you change the bulbs to those LED types? As they have different current requirement, it will trigger the warning. If that's the case, you might need a resistor pack.

The E36 has a two pole brake switch. One drives the lights, the other the computer. This is prone to failure. Its a very cheap fix. Just get a new switch from your local agent and its a 5 min job to change over. The switch is at the top of the brake pedal.

I had to do it both of my E36s.
