  1. Now heres the odd thing, got in the car this morning and it was quiet as a mouse, hasn't made a noise since, when it started making the noise I'd just returned from driving 3.5hrs at speed. could it be too thin a gear oil that's losing it's viscosity at temp?
  2. Yes, I did fit a pilot bearing, though pushed it in quite a way, is it possible that it hasn't located properly?
  3. Think selling the car is a bit extreme for a simple gearbox fault, I've only just put the thing in, so a replacement box job would not be too bad, how many $$$$ is one talking to get a new bearing and seal?I put GL4 oil in it.
  4. Well, a week after doing the conversion it's making some nasty noises, symptoms are as follows: Not in gear and clutch out a rattling noise is heard Not in gear and clutch in, noise goes away In gear and clutch out, rolling along the road at idle, noise is heard Thing is I don't think it's the input shaft to the gearbox as it "should" be in the spigot bearing and when pulling away there isn't a huge amount of vibration or knocking, Also unlikely to be release bearing as it's new and a buggered release bearing doesn't make a loud knocking sound in my experience. However, I have recently had the gear oil changed and noticed after my 700km drive today that there is oil all over the underside of the car. any ideas?
  5. think they were about $80ish Seem pretty good.
  6. My bushes are nolathane from BNT, not sure as to the difference really as my previous bushes were shot, a great improvement over shot bushes though.
  7. Hehe, she's well alarmed, and no you can't steal my shiny new gearbox.I'm in Merivale. We should organise a mini-meet sometime.
  8. Luckily I had all the tools I needed, and had the sense to look at the gearbox and see I needed to get some E-bit star type sockets before starting, halfway through (about 6:30pm without a car for transport to repco) I thought I needed a deep 13mm socket to discover they were 14mm nuts grrr, though it proved useful later.
  9. Yes I do have a black 325i I have a very noticable number plate (RF) if that's the one you've seen. Would be great to meet up with some more owners. Yes the getrag 260 fits, one thing no-one told me was that the bolts in the automatic are shorter then the manual so you'll need to get the longer bolts from the doner (or buy new ones as I had to) some parts of the job are not much fun (removing starter motor is one of these) oh, and as a friend who helped with the conversion pointed out you don't need to swap the pedal box, you can just undo the big bolt and swap over the pedals as all the mountings are there for the clutch master cylinder. I need to top up the gear oil tonight and then fun fun fun! Also need to do my cambelt, though I might get that done at a garage.
  10. hehe, will post pics when I can get them off my friends camera, Cheers for the warm welcome! it's amazing the difference in acceleration from the auto, I fitted the getrag 260 gearbox from a 323i, seems good so far. Bleeding the clutch was difficult though!
  11. Hi all, I've just finished (this afternoon) converting my 325i to a 5spd manual. This is my first BMW and I love it! with the 4.10 LSD and 5spd it's quite a performer too! The conversion wasn't the easiest to do but all went well in the end. I'm now just scared of the next time it rains! :bounce:
