I own an ’86 318i with the ‘gutless M10’ motor and I stick by it. The motor is reliable, clean, & indestructible. The six is indeed more powerful, offering loads more torque, and yes- there’s that exhaust note of a six that you just can’t compete with! However, depending on your needs (wasn’t it for your girlfriend?) the M10 (only with a manual of course) offers enough power to get around, and don’t forget the other variable in this situation is the driver – knowing how to exploit the power. My 318i gets ‘da respekt’ :mosh: from the e30 323/325i clan that I seem to surround myself with. Driver training day at Taupo a few years back when it was nice and wet, the sixes weren’t exactly walking away. An e36 325i from Napier got pissed when he rounded a corner leading onto a long straight and just couldn’t shake that ‘gutless M10’ off his right bumper. :finger: Having said that, off the line speed isn’t that great, as shown by Bumpstop325, who gave me a quarter mile drag at Manfield with a 70 odd meter head start and still beat me by a car length. :banghead: Buy, upgrade, interchange, turbo, supercharge, chip the car at your leisure, but assess the cost-benefits of doing so.

What do you intend on doing with it once you have stolen it? You know you'd have a madman chasing you for life! :rambo:

In some respect you're getting an ok deal, i've heard of worse. I drive a minta '86 318iM  that is completely stock except for the king springs that stiffened things up, it doesnt even look low. Example in my case, when i went to change my insurance i uttered the letters B...M...W... and they just smiled at me and said "ahh, no". When i wasked why, there was a bullshit excuse of that it was and 1800 coupe and i was young. To that, my comeback was that my previous car was a 2lt couple (honda accord) and prior to that was a toyota levin (when i was 17!!) After negotiations with their head honcho in auckland they accepted me. Few years later now, i'm paying $730 pa @ 65% NCD (!!), and recently recieved a letter saying due to the fact that e30's are now a targetted car, my excess is $1k, with an excess for attempted theft or theft of $1500 !! Note, dont insure with the AA, they're a bunch of theiving &*$%#& !! and i too am searching for a better deal!!

Still keen on this one?, except for the comments on how much it'll cost to run Will convey your interest and offer to the owner. Owner wanting $4500 though... but is being told to get real. Gear box shouldn't be major, if it is.. then 'bumpstop325' has one on hand.

In terms of the loving care it needs: Fix gearbox leak is the main one, the rest is nominal stuff like needs a good service (oil change etc), light bulb replacements etc, and fix rear drivers side electric window. These are the only initial things i found wrong with it. Other than that, it sounds grouss! Beats the sound of my '18 any day. Go the six. If it doesnt sell i'm gonna pinch the rims off it... maybe.

I'm selling this car on behalf of the owner who is in Lower Hutt (Wellington). Have had a look at the car myself and is looking ok, but in the need of some TLC. Enough ramble, the fundimental info follows: 1989 E30 320i, automatic, 4 door , silver, new rear brakes, new radiator (mint as). Reg. / Wof due soon. Any interest / offers?... give us a yell. Can provide more info as i get it.

I have an M10 with cam chain in my 318i. In terms of purchasing a 3er the cam belt/chain point is worth noting, however there are more important things to consider. I looked for about 9 months before I found my wagon & whilst looking I saw many 3ers in many different states. Getting a good straight body is what to look for, as in my experience the mechanics tend to be sound. However I have replaced the rotors and pads which can set up back about two hundee a corner. The 318i’s M10 motor tends to be bullet proof, but I have seen the inside of a 2.3ltr six done 410K, still with the hone marks showing in the bores – BMW make ‘em tidy! Tidy interiors tend to be difficult to find if looking in the earlier e30’s, cracking dashes are common etc. Setting yourself a time frame would be my advice, as if you’re keen on them, it’s worth taking time and finding a good one. It definitely paid off in my case. Possibly someone on the shore from here could cruise round to have a glance upon purchase.

Shots bro! I couldn't catch much action on my digital camera, came out a wash. Where was the shot of bumpstop? Hoping 'shullet man' doesn't catch this action on here.
