  1. Hi James That link is where I got the included angle from. I noticed it is for a non Sport package. It would be great to find a resource that has scrub radiuses for different models and wheel combinations. This is a link that explains some of the effect of positive zero and negative scrub radiuses. If any one is interested... http://www.clubprotege.com/forum/showthrea...on-Scrub-Radius The fluid filled steering box cars can be a little vague in comparison to a rack and pinion car. It would be nice to try and get a bit more feel and response with out making it wandery. As you can see from that very good image you posted the more the diameter of the tire increases the smaller positive scrub raduises become. So there is a chance that if I plus size I will do the opposite of above. I have attached an excel spreadsheet that a guy made for an AE86. Any excel gurus want to modify it for our cars? We would need the hub face to steering axis and included angle measurements for the cars first though.... Still looking. ae86scrubradius.zip
  2. Thanks Scott. I figured it out. Simple really. BWT I am talking about plus sizing diametrically. Sorry I should have been more specific. Correct me if I am wrong but you add tan (included angle) * radius increase to the offset in order to keep the same scrub radius. So if I ended up with tires that had a 8mm larger radius and the included angle is 13.5 degrees then I would need to change the offset from the standard 20mm ET with my 17/8 style 66 wheels to 22mm ET in order to keep the same scrub radius. For example the BBS RGR 18/8.5 ET22mm. Where do we find the scrub radiuses and included angles for BMW's?
  3. Hello folks. Does any one have the measurements and method to calculate how much to change the wheel offset when increasing rolling circumference? I'm a bit new to the concept my self. Can some one tell me where to find the scrub radius specs for the 540iM-Sport with the standard wheels and tires? Many thanks Jason
  4. Thanks for chiming in Johno. I'm deffo after performance first. I've been looking at the test on tirerack and the Continental Extreme Contact DW looks to be quiet and the Michelin Pilot Super Sport as well. But I want to sharpen up the turn in which points to the Micky's. What do you think?
  5. Awesome Neal. The Conti's sure have minimal tread blocks. Any one compared them to the Michelin Pilot Super Sports?
  6. Right on the money there Darren!I'm working on my signal to noise ratio! ...always had a thing for the r32's I'm sure that would be a hoot. BTW your uber M5 completely flip'n Corollaized my 540M, if ($the540m eq $therealm5) { print "your dreaming! just get your own one."; Fun times. I don't really care how much the tires cost. I just want to stop it under steering and take a big chunk out of the road noise. J
  7. Thanks guys. Darren: It was nice of the council to provide us with that race track. I'm not sure why the other cars were stopped or did it just seem that way? Any of the UHP/MHP tires that ppl thought were actually rather loud and would stay away from if noise was a factor? I've been reading this -> http://www.fem.unicamp.br/~lva/WorkshopQui...ys/Bernhard.pdf and have come to the conclusion that as always it is more complex than I thought and our roads are utter crap. From what I gleaned; Wider = Louder (Just going to ignore that!) Stickier = Louder (going to ignore that as well!) Blockier Pattern = Louder Harder = Louder Small exit channels for air to escape = Louder (high frequency) Internal cavity volume excites 250 Hz resonance = Louder (most important for in car noise levels and different for each size of tire) <- Who wants to try and calculate that... "Sorry dear but our current tire configuration excites a 250Hz harmonic resonance that is insufficiently dampened buy the systems mechanical properties hence we HAVE to upgrade to 315/30/21 all round in order to be able to listen to Rotor+ Aileron or any thing else with a wide dynamic range" "Ok but are you sure it has to be so big? Is that really the first anti node creating cavity volume?" "Of course dear" "What ever you think is best... would you like massage while you type this?" Damn I knew I was dreaming!! Opportunity for tread blocks to slide over each other = Louder Now I am no expert with little real world experience. Any one else care to add to this. Who wants to put these in an order Quietest to Loudest? Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 2 Michelin Pilot Super Sports Bridgestone Potenza RE-11 Bridgestone RE002 Adrenalin's Yokohama ADVAN Neova AD08 Continental ContiSportContact 3 Dunlop Direzza Sport Z1 Kumho Ecsta LE Sport Pirelli PZero I'm sure I've missed some and included some that are track only tires. Many thanks Jason
  8. Question for the tire whores. I've currently got Bridgestone Sport touring tires on the front of the e39 540iM and they just have to go. Top priority is grip and turn in response and a close second is quietness on our course chip open roads. Any thoughts. Also can some one please explain the fundamentals of tire noise. Is tread pattern the primary factor? Are directional's always louder? Do tires with energy absorbing material like the aramid in the Michelin PSS help to dampen sound? Just looking for the 235/45/17 fronts at the moment. Unless someone can convince me to get M5 18s and go for a full set of Micky PSS's Cheers Jas
  9. Thanks for asking the question Chad. I have the standard audio so with out the M package amps I may be doing a bit more wiring. Thanks for all your PMs Darren. I'm looking forward to checking out your work next time I'm down in Welly.
  10. Thanks for all the comments guys. Shane you are right about the reversing mirror. This is what I'm thinking of doing so far: Nav upgrade thanks for the PM Hotwire Aux in not sure weather to use the video port or a DICE conection Speaker upgrade something like this http://bavariansoundwerks.com/product/380/...39-5-Series-M5/
  11. Good tips guys! I'll try the partial dsc tomorrow morning. I didn't know the abs was turned off as well... I used the windows and sunroof open trick after an afternoon at the beach yesterday. These are very thoughtful cars. I have been slowly making my way through the manual and amiring the service history. Having a searchable pdf version is helpful thanks Shane. One of the keys has the parking assistance programed for the left wing mirror while the other one dosn't. I haven't figured out how to change this yet. One thing Mr dog and lemon did say that was actually useful is that there are lot of 'hidden' features with these cars so I will keep doing the home work. Thanks for the kind words Chad. Yours looks beautiful as well... wanna swap bumpers? I actually used the bat phone today! Couldn't do predictave text but the hands free was all good untill I had to enter an extension... I'm currenly reading up on audio upgrades. It sure would be nice to have a fully functioning, fully intergrated, Hi Fi, NZ Nav ready, Aux in capable head unit. If it is easy do you could explain how to program pathway lights Shane? And how on earth did you get your self a red one?
  12. Thanks guys. I finaly managed to figure out how to set the time and turn off the DSC and had some fun in the wet on my local hill climb today
  13. Hello everyone! I am very glad to have found this place. You guys seem to have a great thing going here. I have been looking for a solid, competent touring car for some of my open road missions. Initially I was looking at Lexus GS 300s and Audi S4s untill a friend sugested I look at a BMW 540i. I am so greatful that he did. The others are nice cars but NOTHING drives quite like a good BMW. There is something magical going on there. I just fell in love with it and as of yesterday I am now the proud owner of an NZ new 540i M with 54ks on the clock and I just can't fault it. I have to take my hat off to David Shacklady from Giltrap Prestige for finding it for me, he really kicked a goal there. It even has the folding rear seats that I was struggling to find. I would like to keep it reasonably original but I probably wont be able to help myself in some areas like the sound system. I am certainly open to suggestions. I look forward to talking with you all in the future. Fond Regards Jason Williams
