  1. I just pulled the fog lights out of my wrecked 1990 bmw today only to notice they dont fit in my 1986 e30. I unbolted the black bracket and everything. Am i going to need to buy new fog lights ? If so where is a good place or does anyone have any ?

    Thanks

  2. Just installed my new alternator and it started to squeel when i change down gear. I figured my belt wasnt tight enough so i tightend it more but when i had 4 people in the car it started to squeel again.

It only does it when i changed down gear ? Maybe i didnt tighten the bolt properly ?

    Thanks

  3. The biggest worry each of us have is breaking down in the middle of the night. Fortunately we all brought the right brand of car to minimize the chances (:.

However last night my nightmare came true. After a mate came and towed me home i diagnosed it to be a fault with my alternator. It wasnt charging the battery so the car died.

My plan of attack is to obviously just replace it. My e30 is a m10 4 cylinder motor and i was planning on replacing my alternator with my parts car which is a 1990 m40 (unsure) 4 cylinder e30.

If anyone has any previous experience of weather the alternator would fit my car or any advice would be appreciated!

    Thanks,

  4. Today I was giving my car the walk around making sure it was clean enough and up to my standards when i decided to take a look at the tires. Horrified i noticed that the left rear was 195/60/14 and the right rear was 185/65/14.

I don't know how bad that is for the car but its going to bug me and i want the same sized tires all round (195/65/14). The tread on them was also worn so that's another reason to justify buying new tires.

However, as we all know buying new tires comes with a cost.. A rather steep one at that. In the mean time i would like to get some second hand ones until i save enough money for brand new.

I was hoping maybe someone in my fellow BM community may have something they are willing to sell?

Whether or not you know a good second hand tire company or have some spare tires or wheels you could sell me.

What ever it is, I would really appreciate your help.

    Thanks guys!

  5. I recently had the unfortunate event of snapping my car key in the lock, I have a spare key but the remainder is still stuck in there.

In the mean time i am using the boot to unlock the car (which gets alot of funny looks :/)

Has anyone had the same problem ? I talked to accurate lock smiths and they charge $100 an hour and said its quite a specialist job.

Before forking out to get the key removed i'd just like to hear your opinions. Is there someway i could get it out myself ?

    Cheers,

  6. changing the clutch in an E30 is a relatively simple task to do over a weekend if your up to it, its not as daunting as it sounds! a basic socket set, a jack and a couple jack stands, a few inverse torx sockets and a torque wrench are all you need. One of my first project ever on my E30 was doing a manual conversion, and that was on the back of very basic offroader/4x4 mechanics.

Thanks for the positive news (:

Yeah i figured nows the best time to learn how to do it and with the help of my Grand dad and his hoist we'll be able to get the job done.

    Thanks,

  7. I assume it's an E30,dont know your location

    you will be up for

    clutch kit

    Flywheel machine

    and Labour

While you are there probably best to get the slave replaced, as with the master and fluid for reliability

    Yes e30 and auckland.

    Thanks for your help !

  8. Well my first bad news with the car has a arrived today and i noticed when i let the clutch out to go up my drive way (which is a hill) the revs were at at 3 thousand but i wasnt accelerating very fast haha. Darn clutch was slipping. Thats the first time its ever happened and i dont normally have problems when driving.

Every now and then from take of it does something funny and it almost stalls but thats about it. I must admit that i do a few skids in it just to get her a bit sideways and have some fun.

I know its the responsible thing to do and all but come on, who doesnt do it every now and than. I do take care of my car e.g. regular services.

So im in need of advice, what i was thinking of doing was just taking it to Auto clutch and getting them to check it out and see what my options are.

Does anyone have any recommendations or have had the same problem and what costs are involved.

Any help would be much appreciated,

    Thanks !

  9. Hi all,

I brought my 1986 e30 318 manual about 8 months ago, it was a tad scary because of all the talk on how BMW are expensive to maintain.

Best decision ive made and has just cost me a little bit more than my old Mazda 323. I paid $3300 for it knowing that it needed $700 of work thanks to BM Workshop.

What inspired me to get an e30 is my father, sister and mother have each had one in different stages of there life and i didnt want some commen jap car like a Nissan Sylvia.

Im getting a bit tired of the height and the wheels but being at school thats one of the issues we face , no money !

    Cheers guys

  10. The bmWorkshop in Grey lynn has recently told me i need to replace the front left hub on my 1986 e30 because my wheel bearings are screwed. They quoted me $350.

I instantly thought there must have been a cheaper way and was thinking i could get a new hub of a member off here or i could go to the wreckers and than install it myself.

    1) What are the steps required to install it ? , would it be that difficult?

    2) Does anyone have a hub for the front left of my 1986 318 e30.

    Cheers
