  1. Well, it looks as if we're definitely in business. Done close to a couple hundred kms since replacement of the sensor, and all is well:) Just watching out for economy now, see if that's also improved. Thanks guys
  2. Ooops. Lol. I replaced the temperature sensor in the photo, with a second hand one supplied by HELLBM. Now I just need to do some more running to confirm it's all working properly. The car is not a daily driver at the moment, but will be again when University restarts. The car belongs to my son's girlfriend, and I'm teaching her to drive in it.
  3. Well, so far, so good. Have only done 10km out, then after 2 hours, the same 10k back, but with no problems. Need a bit more travel time to confirm it, but it's looking good, so far. Hoping it will also bring fuel consumption back to where it used to be Cheers.
  4. Some more information, plus a photo. If the plug is taken off the sensor, the car will start and idle fine. If it's cold, it will not take any throttle, but warmed up, the car will run great, no surging, or anything untoward. The photo shows the sensor in question, directly behind the oil filter, under the front of the intake manifold. I assume it's a temperature sensor, although not for the temperature gauge. Am I correct in that thought, and would it be the actual sensor which has a problem? Where's the best place to get a replacement? Thanks again.
  5. No, unfortunately, I'm in South Auckland, but thanks anyway.
  6. Morning all. Our 1994 BMW 318iS sometimes revs for no apparent reason. Can be driving, or sitting in gear, or out of gear. It will sometimes rev up and down every second or so, sometimes just sit on the higher revs. Can be anywhere between about 1500 and 4000RPM when out of gear. There is a sensor towards front of engine, on passenger side, below the manifold. Moving that wire will often alleviate the problem, or make t happen. If it's in the rev mood, and then ignition is turned off, it won't fire up, just turns over, until that wire is moved. What is that sensor, (temperature sensor?) and would it be the actual sensor, or a wire damaged inside that part of loom, or the plug that fits onto the sensor? Or is it likely to be some other reason? If it's the wire, should I cut it back and solder in another wire in place of it? What's that sensor worth if it needs replacing? I have puulled the plug off, and pushed it on and off a number of times to be sure there isn't oxidisation stopping proper contact, but it looks okay. Many thanks. Keith

  8. Hey, me again. According to my owners manual the row of green lights on start up is the countdown til my service is due. Fairynuff, I'm down to one light and have been for a little while. I do my own servicing, I don't trust many mechanics Is there any way I can reset the service light myself, or is it one of those niggly things I just have to live with or get BMW to sort? It's a 94 520i Executive. Thanks
  9. Hey, me again, the old codger Couple of queries. In the mornings, the transmission seems VERY slow to change, refusing to go to second until somehwere around 4 grand, which is much higher than I'd like, especially on a cold motor. I'd like to change the transmission fluid in the hope it might help. After some research on the net I've found a couple websites that suggest I can drain the fluid in it and then should be able to fill it through a fill hole, which there appears to be no sign of, and theres no dipstick for the trans that I can see either. I've also found two conflicting websites about the fluid I should use. One says Dexron II fluid and the other says Dexron III, which is correct? And how do I fill the trans up again once I've drained it! Other thing was how do I get to the rear speaker wires? Theres not enough low frequency bass so I'm going to put a cheap subwoofer in to reinfornce the lower end (yeah my sons fault, bastard got me spending money on stereo equipment and now I can't go back - blast). But I need to get to the rear speaker wires so I can use the speaker level inputs on my amplifier. No I don't want to use RCAs, I have no desire to change what is a perfectly good source unit. Having said that, how do I get it out though - undamaged, so I can get remote power for the amplifier. Thanks, Druid P.S. - Car is a 94 520I Executive, trans is what I believe to be a 'sealed for life' 5spd auto,ZF brand
  10. Howdy Just bought myself 520i Executive (makes me sound rather flash I think hehe), and having previously owned a selection of American & Japanese cars I thought I'd try something new. Bought on a bit of a whim off TM, I'm hoping I'm not in over my head. Anyways, thought I'd introduce myself, I'm a basically retired 63 year old, 3 ankle biters, own my own house (and no, the bank doesn't own any of it, at least not since I last checked) and collect old radios in my spare time - of which there never seems to be much. Lost my wife a couple of months ago to cancer, and she's usually been the car decidee of the family, so hopefully I've done her proud by buying a vehicle myself without her usual input. Why a Beamer, well I'm not really sure. Prior to my oldest sons other half buying one for what seemed to be practically nothing, I had always thought BMWs were for flashy high salary type business people. Lol, more fool me. Anyways, thats me in a nut shell, no doubt you'll hear a bit from me - I've owned the car a week and I'm still learning things! Thanks Druid
