  1. My E34 made a flappy, belt broken sound. I pulled up straight away. After I towed it home I took the dizzy cap off and watched while my wife turned the starter over. The rotor didn't turn so I assume the timing belt is broken. Before I go to the trouble of replacing the timing belt is there an easy way of telling if the valves/pistons are OK?

    ABS HCU

OK - failing that - Does anyone know how to disconnect the ABS system. This problem keeps running my battery down.

    ABS HCU

Hey There, My 1990 525i has a problem (maybe) with the ABS Hydraulic Control Unit. After ABS has functioned the ABS light comes on and the HCU whines for an hour or two after the ignition is turned off. Seems a bit excessive to me. What I want to know is: Is this normal? What is the HCU trying to pressurise? If it's not normal, what can I do to fix it?
  4. Not CEL - it was the Brake light. Also had trouble starting cold. I replaced the ht leads, rotor, fuel filter, fuel pump relay - problem still there. Cleaned the Idle Control Valve out in a solvent bath and then with CRC contact cleaner. The problem is now fixed.
  5. Hi, I have a 1990 525i E34 M20 imported from Japan - Every now and then the Check Engine Light (I assume its the CEL. Its a red exclamation mark in a circle with brackets around it). While the light flicks on the engine has no power. Anyway, how do I find out the fault code? I tried stomping on the accelerator 5 x within 5 secs with the ignition on but no flashes - nothing happened.
