  1. So far have found that the M52TU is cable-driven, but it's not conventional, it's also motor-driven. The motor can override the cable in both directions (closes throttle for traction control and opens throttle for cruise control.) The cable is not rigidly fixed to the throttle plate.

Will see if I can get instructions from dealer otherwise will just have to wait till the wiring harness arrives in 2 weeks time.

  2. I know you weren't emplying that I do it for you.. some people actually do though... they think I know every thing.. I don't... I am able to help where I can though. My business services and repairs standard vehicles... we are not the Auck. BMW modifiers.. I learn alot on here as well ... and I enjoy it

    :)

  3. sh*t happens doing this sort of thing...research, research before spending ???

And only talk to people who have done it with success.. and keep off US forums as there cars can be quite different. UK forums are safer

It's a case of what you don't know that you don't know :)

Yes, that's right Euro BMW are a safer bet rather than US BMW. Wise words, "only talk to people who have done it with success". Will have to learn it the hard way this time.

Maybe too late to stop parts from Germany but I'm sure there are plenty of e46 M54 engine owners who I can sell the cable and steering wheel to.

  4. Just found out that early e46 like 328ci have throttle cable and later e46 like 330ci have drive-by-wire.

All instructions found on retrofitting cruise control are on later e46. Is it the same when retrofitting on a early e46 with throttle cable?

Have just order the wiring harness from Germany, hope I can stop it in time if it is different.

  5. Have you got a part # Tony ??

    After a little digging, part # 61318379091.

This part # has two version, one with SMG and one without SMG.

From what I have read, it seem like all the newer slip rings will have SMG connector. Probably from 2003 onwards when SMG gearbox came out? So that means all e46 from 2003 onwards will have them?

The dealers are charging $300+gst and was hoping to pick up a second hand one without going to eBay.

Let me know what you find, Thanks Glenn.

  6. Just some basic info on e38.

    http://www.windigoauto.com/E38CommonProblems.html

    http://www.meeknet.co.uk/E38/bmw_e38_buying_guide.htm

If you have had the car for a long time and had a lot of use out of it then you would not mind spending money on fixing the car. But when you have only spent $2.5k buying and later finding that you need to spend $3k on fixing it then you might not be so keen.

I would test out all the electrical stuff in the car, seat, window, each button for a/c, radio, and anything else on the centre console. check the transmission shift smoothly in cold, bewary of auto box with such high kms, chances are no previous owner would have flush the oil.

Need to also watch out for worn suspension bushing. I'm sure the shocks for e39 & e46 are not $630 each on front, probably only half of that. maybe 7 Series parts are more expensive too. Might want to find out how much a set of brake pads & rotor would cost for an idea of general maintenance.

  7. The two stage airbag had two connectors,

1st) I remove the black one and reset the light, it came back on.

2nd) then I put the black one in and took up the green one, reset the light and it stayed off.

The black connector doesn't go into the green socket so it's not like I could choose.

If there was any problems, I'm sure the airbag self-test light would come back on. Don't know if this is will deploy 1st or 2nd stage airbag on impact.

Hate to think that I'm putting my life at risk just because I want a thicker sport steering with buttons & paddles.

(have not connect the buttons or paddles yet)

  8. Then you are lucky. Hope it stays that way for you.

I believe in the opposite too, there aren't any great days or great years. Life is made up of moments that comes to you which can be good or bad.

eg you go out for a drive in the back road, there will be moments that are great when you have the S-bend lined up correctly, there will be moments that are sh*t when you come across a pothole or a unexpected compression.

eg you're holding your child and she is so cute looks at you and tries to talk, suddenly she pukes. You had a great moment then a sh*t moment.

eg seeing your mother-in-law drives off the cliff in your brand new car. depends on how you interpret that, it can either be a great moment or a sh*t moment; not both.

(it did happen to a friend, but much exaggerated, it was a steep driveway and she went off the driveway, slip down a slope and scratch the side while reversing down)

  9. Don't have a sh*t year or a sh*t month, not even a sh*t day. I have a sh*t moment or a sh*t two second, no one has ever heard me say "I had a sh*t day" or "Yesterday was sh*t".

Everyday I wake up, I say "This is a good day". Don't ever get up on the wrong side of the bed because the left side is just as good as the right side :)

  10. I am with AMI and have had no issues with them. Last claim was 5 years ago. Wife's Allroad is insured for $80k and the premium was $466.57. My M5 is insured for $120k and premium was $610.31 Excess on both is $250

That is some good deal, even without multisaver I sure it's probably like 10% higher.

Like a lot of people have discovered, premiums are now very high, maybe it has something to do with age brackets.

Mine went from $650 to $850 to $950 for next year. Value drop to $15k for my 328ci with State Insurance.

Can't blame it on them though, because in the last two years the value of e46 coupe have dropped heaps due to more people selling and less people buying.

Went to AMI who insure it for $18k at $850 for the next year. can't help but think if a claim was to be made, they could probably say the car is worth $15k; I'm sure all the insurance companies have the same car value to work from.

Something I don't understand was 2 years ago I had a $3000 Honda and the premium was $600. Then I changed to a $20k BMW and the premium was $650.

  11. I've got a SMG multifunctional steering wheel, will be getting the retrofit kit as Hybrid has detailed in this forum.

Just want to know if anyone know if I can connect those paddles to the steptronic gearbox?

Will try and find all the wires to see if I'm confident in doing it myself.

If you are reading this Hybrid, do you have spare hour or two to fit this? Of course your time will be reimbursed, just name a figure :) Feel free to send me a message if you are up for this...

  12. But I believe BMW and Castrol only really support that oil from the new point of view, not the "this will improve your engine no-matter what point of view". So be aware if you've done 60000k's+ I wouldnt switch to the lower viscosity oil, I'd probably go to a thicker oil in step's of 5 every 50000kms to keep up with the wear of the engine.

    Hope this helps=D

I see, thanks. Sorry to hear you waste so much money...

  13. Try this for pricing then... I bought 2 tyres of Johno today.. his tyre machine is faulty at the moment

Took them to a Tyre Company today (No Names) Cost me $70 incl. to fit 2 19" tyres .. trade ??? Virtually got told to suck it up. Thats what they all charge now ??

Had tyres fitted & balance for $17 at my local greenlane firestone and $13.5 (trade) at a independent grey lynn tyre shop. Fitting & balancing is certainly making lots of money for those guys who charges $35 at trade. Wouldn't want to come across that shop...

  14. I put castrol edge in my e36 325i and it was to thin...

    I wouldnt recommend it.

    5-10w-40 or higher only.

0w-40 is for brand spankin new engines only.

What happen, was it doing something funny?

BMW TIS says LL98 can be used in m50 & m51 engines found in e36.

BMW Longlife oils are only available in 0w/5w-30/40 and can be used anywhere in the world, at anytime of the year, regardless of the ambient temperature.
