  1. hi all, am have problems with my 98 540 starting and am just trying to educate myself a little bit more before i take it to some one to fix, thinking auto electritian or Jeff Grey BMW, not sure yet.

from my point of view it just seems that the battery isnt holding a charge and going flat, even after a drive. Got it checked by bmw 4 days ago and they said the battery was fine but im not sure if i beleive them, a mechanic friend said that if they test it while it isnt fully charged it wont show a problem. when i turn the key to start it all i get is clicking.

today has been a stuggle with it starting but ill give a description of the day. started fine in the morning drove 10 minutes and parked for an hour 20. left the key in the car and it wouldnt start. got a jump drove home 15 minutes and turned it off restarted it and it started fine, left it running for 10 minutes turned it off. 2 hours later drove for 25 min and parked for 4 and a half hours tried to start, turned over once and started clicking again.

any help would be greatly appreciated cause the problems are starting to get me down a bit. have had the car parked up and used very sparingly over the past 2 years as well.

    cheers

  2. i guessed this was more maintanence than electrical.

twice today i had problems starting my car but both times i got it jump started ok. The first time it died i had the heater in the car running for maybe 20 minutes without the engine on, after i jumped started i left it idling for ten minutes then started it a couple of times and then left it for maybe an hour and it woulnt start again.

so my question is, is there any ways to test the barrey, or check the age of the battery? and lastly there is a lable metioning battery status im not sure how this works? can anyone help?

    the car is a 1998 E39 540 automatic

    Cheers

    Stuart

  3. lets see.

i can drive for 5 hours straight and get out of the car and feel like driving for another 5 hours.

I went drag racing at ruapuna and while waiting in line, i had air con running and was watching tv. and still run times faster than some stipped out cars.

"apparently" it will do 180 on the open road and only feel like 100. and there is almost zero road noise.

it just does everything i want it to, drives great, rides great, looks even better, practical. as close as i can get to my dream car (E39 M5) but 50k cheaper.

  4. had little luck on this subject. The website jochen recommended seems to be very good but... they dont seem to ship outside the us, has anybody had luck getting around this,

also checked with autosound and pauls audio and they both say that it cant be done....

the items are easy but getting them is not. so next time maybe look at a different player.

regardless of what happens, cheers for all the help given.

  5. Can anybody recommend anybody in christchurch who can fit these two things for me?

is the mp3 changers a straight plug in for the old one (i was hoping to get alpine one)

with a ps2 (i have a slimline) how do you go about getting the power for it, the ac adapter supplies 8.5v. and is the picture/sound just the same as doing an ipod

if there is a company that will fit these at a resonable price i would rather pay them to fit it, if not i can probebly get it done myself

    Cheers for any help

    Stuart

  6. south island roads are all so smooth and well made with camber and apart from sh1 there all pretty quiet too.

with competitive shooting i do now i get to spend a bit of time on them with the 540, get to do chch to gore which is the centeral otago road which would be the best in the country if there were no speed limits, get to do chch to blenheim twice a year so get to drive the kaikoura highway, (depending on traffic is outstanding) and get to do my favourite road from chch to westport which has hamner to lewis pass with lots of fast corners, lewis pass to reefton tight and smooth, then reefton to westport which i think has stunning scenery along the buller gorge.

my only problem is trying not to do 150 all the time cause that still feels slow on them. probly not the worst problem to have :D

  7. Dragster Engines: Interesting Stats

Nothing to do with Mustangs, but engine enthusiasts will be interested in this set of figures for big power dragster engines.

One Top Fuel dragster 500 cubic inch Hemi engine makes more horsepower than the first 4 rows at the Daytona 500.

Under full throttle, a Top Fuel dragster engine consumes 1½ gallons of nitro methane per second; a fully loaded 747 consumes jet fuel at the same rate with 25% less energy being produced.

A stock Dodge 426 Hemi V8 engine cannot produce enough power to drive the dragster's supercharger.

With 3000 CFM of air being rammed in by the supercharger on overdrive, the fuel mixture is compressed into a near-solid form before ignition. Cylinders run on the verge of hydraulic lock at full throttle.

At the stoichiometric 1.7:1 air/fuel mixture for nitro methane the flame front temperature measures 7050 degrees F.

Nitro methane burns yellow. The spectacular white flame seen above the stacks at night is raw burning hydrogen, dissociated from atmospheric water vapour by the searing exhaust gases.

Dual magnetos supply 44 amps to each spark plug. This is the output of an arc welder in each cylinder.

Spark plug electrodes are totally consumed during a pass. After 1/2 way, the engine is dieseling from compression plus the glow of exhaust valves at 1400 degrees F. Only cutting the fuel flow can shut down the engine.

If spark momentarily fails early in the run, unburned nitro builds up in the affected cylinders and then explodes with sufficient force to blow cylinder heads off the block in pieces or split the block in half.

In order to exceed 300 mph in 4.5 seconds dragsters must accelerate at an average of over 4G's. In order to reach 200 mph well before half-track, the launch acceleration approaches 8G's.

Dragsters reach over 300 miles per hour before you have completed reading this sentence.

Top Fuel Engines turn only approximately 540 revolutions from light to light!

Including the burnout, the engine must survive 900 only revolutions under max load.

The redline is actually quite high at 9500 rpm.

The Bottom Line; Assuming all the equipment is paid off, the crew worked for free, and for once NOTHING BLOWS UP, each run costs an estimated US$1,000.00 per second. The current Top Fuel dragster elapsed time record is 4.441 seconds for the quarter mile (Oct 5th 2003, Tony Schumacher). The top speed record is 333.00 mph (533 km/h) as measured over the last 66' of the run (Sept 28 2003 Doug Kalitta).

Putting all of this into perspective:

You are riding the average US$250,000 Honda MotoGP bike. Over a mile up the road, a Top Fuel dragster is staged and ready to launch down a quarter mile strip as you pass. You have the advantage of a flying start. You run the RC211V hard up through the gears and blast across the starting line and past the dragster at an honest 200 mph (293 ft/sec). The 'tree' goes green for both of you at that moment. The dragster launches and starts after you. You keep your wrist cranked hard, but you hear an incredibly brutal whine that sears your eardrums and within 3 seconds the dragster catches and passes you. He beats you to the finish line, a quarter mile away from where you just passed him.

Think about it, from a standing start, the dragster had spotted your 200 mph and not only caught, but nearly blasted you off the road when he passed you within a mere 1320 foot long race course.

not sure of the original source but a interesting read

  8. i was standing on the side of tai tapu rd closing a gate and heard a amg mercedes v8 passing another car and i sounded amazing, the way a v8 should sound.

what is there that i can do to make my exhaust sound better, i have been told that my car has 7 mufflers.

something that is very close to factory or factory aftermarket, (m or schnitz?). and doesnt void the aa warranty??

is this too much to ask?

    i have a 1998 e39 540i

  9. ps3 all the way, bought on release so its backwards compatible just about to get gt5 prologue, gta 4. call of duty 4 and resistance fall of man is amazing. it can play divx and high def mp4 movies.

and it has never missed a beat.

  10. Power at Flywheel (BHP) : 286

Weight without Driver (KG) : 1770

Power to Weight Ratio (BHP Per Ton) : 164.18

    0 - 60 (Secs) : 6.50

    0 - 100 (Secs) : 16.15

    60 - 100 (Secs) : 9.65

    Quarter Mile (Secs) : 14.82

    Terminal Speed (MPH) : 95.78

Drag Strip Quarter Mile (Secs) : 14.72

Drag Strip Terminal Speed (MPH) : 96.85

real time was 14.7 at 94mph.

i think with some launch practice it should come down a little

  11. does anyone have some information on installing a dvd player into a 1998 e39 540, i have the factory tv and as i scan through the channels there is a blank av channel so im guessing it shouldnt be too difficult. the amp and cd changer is on the left of the boot and im not sure where the tv tuner is as i dont know what it looks like.
