  1. am after an auto electrician in christchurch, can anyone recommend one that is quality, or should i just go to Jeff Greys? Cheers Stuart Amos
  2. hi all, am have problems with my 98 540 starting and am just trying to educate myself a little bit more before i take it to some one to fix, thinking auto electritian or Jeff Grey BMW, not sure yet. from my point of view it just seems that the battery isnt holding a charge and going flat, even after a drive. Got it checked by bmw 4 days ago and they said the battery was fine but im not sure if i beleive them, a mechanic friend said that if they test it while it isnt fully charged it wont show a problem. when i turn the key to start it all i get is clicking. today has been a stuggle with it starting but ill give a description of the day. started fine in the morning drove 10 minutes and parked for an hour 20. left the key in the car and it wouldnt start. got a jump drove home 15 minutes and turned it off restarted it and it started fine, left it running for 10 minutes turned it off. 2 hours later drove for 25 min and parked for 4 and a half hours tried to start, turned over once and started clicking again. any help would be greatly appreciated cause the problems are starting to get me down a bit. have had the car parked up and used very sparingly over the past 2 years as well. cheers Stuart Amos
  3. saw this a couple of weeks ago while in france.
  4. cheers for the help, the car is going into chch bmw for a full charge and check of the battery and alternator. just for peace of mind.
  5. i guessed this was more maintanence than electrical. twice today i had problems starting my car but both times i got it jump started ok. The first time it died i had the heater in the car running for maybe 20 minutes without the engine on, after i jumped started i left it idling for ten minutes then started it a couple of times and then left it for maybe an hour and it woulnt start again. so my question is, is there any ways to test the barrey, or check the age of the battery? and lastly there is a lable metioning battery status im not sure how this works? can anyone help? the car is a 1998 E39 540 automatic Cheers Stuart
  6. lets see. i can drive for 5 hours straight and get out of the car and feel like driving for another 5 hours. I went drag racing at ruapuna and while waiting in line, i had air con running and was watching tv. and still run times faster than some stipped out cars. "apparently" it will do 180 on the open road and only feel like 100. and there is almost zero road noise. it just does everything i want it to, drives great, rides great, looks even better, practical. as close as i can get to my dream car (E39 M5) but 50k cheaper.
  7. had little luck on this subject. The website jochen recommended seems to be very good but... they dont seem to ship outside the us, has anybody had luck getting around this, also checked with autosound and pauls audio and they both say that it cant be done.... the items are easy but getting them is not. so next time maybe look at a different player. regardless of what happens, cheers for all the help given.
  8. its not the bmw alpine player, just a standard alpine unit it, has a single round plug. where would i be able to get a Alpine CD-changer-control language to BMW CD-changer-control language unit? or is there a more common name for it
  9. just bought a alpine mp3 changer, how can i go about conecting it up to the existing wiring, do i need to cut into the wiring or is there a adapter i can buy, if so, where from cheers stuart
  10. Can anybody recommend anybody in christchurch who can fit these two things for me? is the mp3 changers a straight plug in for the old one (i was hoping to get alpine one) with a ps2 (i have a slimline) how do you go about getting the power for it, the ac adapter supplies 8.5v. and is the picture/sound just the same as doing an ipod if there is a company that will fit these at a resonable price i would rather pay them to fit it, if not i can probebly get it done myself Cheers for any help Stuart
  11. cheers for the help zenetti, pm sent.
  12. bmw chch have told me that my tyres are too small for my rims so some new tyres are due. currently i have 225 45 r18. questions i have are should i fit the same size tyres on the front and rear wheels? what size should i fit? any particular brands and dealers recomended? i have a 98 540 with m sport rims (i think) they look like the ones in the e39 artical. http://www.bimmersport.co.nz/forums/index....st&id=15250
