Automotive Photography Workshop #2 (Also free)
viktro replied to viktro's topic in General Discussion
Hey aespablo, come along and even if your camera doesn't do everything you want it to, you'll still be able to pick up pointers. Sorry for the late reply by the way, I didn't have email notification of replies on! My camera isn't a flash expensive camera, you can usually get some great images just from following some basic principles. -
Automotive Photography Workshop #2 (Also free)
viktro replied to viktro's topic in General Discussion
Hey everyone, This workshop is coming up next week. I've just updated the location, the Apex Megacentre is directly opposite Sylvia Park. Let me know if you're planning to come along so I can get an idea of numbers. Also post any particular topics you want me to cover or have them ready to ask me on the night. The stuff that I'll be going through will be very much dictated by what you want to learn about. -
Automotive Photography Workshop #2 (Also free)

Sounds good, it's a great opportunity to meet people into the same sort of photography as well -
Hey guys, There are a few people here that missed out on the first one that I ran so I'm running another. Once again the format will be very similar and I'll tweak it as I get more experience in running them. It'd be a good idea for you guys to post what you want to be covered in the workshop. In summary, I'll be covering the basics of automotive photography - equipment, location, positioning, composition, angles, camera settings, natural light, background. You'll be shooting for most of the workshop and I'll be coaching you through the shots you take and giving you feedback. By the end of it, you should have a better understanding of the basic principles behind automotive photography and be able to shoot good photos reliably! I'm going to look for a location where we'll end up with some brilliant shots without too much mucking about! I picked a relatively challenging location out at the Wynyard quarter . Date: 5th April 2012 Time: 6:30pm Location: Top level in carpark, Apex Megacentre, 393 Mount Wellington Highway, Mount Wellington As an aside, I am looking for someone that has an office that they could lend me to run a photoshop workshop for those that are interested. It needs to have a projector and room for people to sit at a boardroom table. Cheers, Victor www.victoryuen.co.nz 021 168 7661

Awesome, have sent you an email

18 month calendar makes a lot of sense, I could definitely do that. Price may need to be adjusted to reflect the extra work but definitely workable.

Hey everyone, I saw a few posts a while back in regards to a Bimmersport Calendar and I see that it's died a bit of a quiet death. Although I know we're into 2012 now, I thought there may still be people interested in me producing a calendar which I could start from say April/May 2012 through to April/May 2013. What I'm offering to do is travel around the country shooting cars of Bimmersport for a calendar or photobook (if the dates don't work for a calendar). I need to cover my costs so this going ahead would be totally dependent on the takeup of Bimmersport. I would require deposits and once we reach a threshold, I will travel as necessary to shoot the cars that are selected (by you guys voting) for the calendar. Given that I would need to travel, I estimate the price of the calendar would be $50.00 - this may change depending on numbers and location of vehicles. So would you guys be interested? For those that haven't seen my work, you can view it at www.victoryuen.co.nz. Cheers, Victor.

Yup that's multiple exposures A lot of what makes a good photo comes down to composition and the location so it's very applicable even though you have a pocket camera. However, you will find yourself a little more limited when it comes to playing around with focus and multiple exposures. Sorry everyone for the late replies, I will subscribe to the topic to make sure I keep on top of replies. I'll have a look at my calendar and see when I can schedule another tutorial session. Sounds like there's a few people keen.

e34play and Shorty, remember that multi photo image I was going to do? I've just edited it up and here's the finished result: Are there other people that are still interested in another workshop? If there are enough numbers I'd be happy to do another one. Alternatively, if people are interested in a photoshop tutorial, I could run one if someone has an office they could offer up with a projector?

Good stuff Shorty, just gotta watch out with how you hold the camera otherwise you'll end up with shots slightly off horizontal level . Keep practicing and send your stuff through to me and I'll give feedback
-
I'm not sure who the people are but they've all posted here: http://www.eurosport.org.nz/forum/viewtopi...?f=1&t=9211 There's about 6 or so people coming to that one. You're welcome to come along to that one .

Plenty of parking if you want to come tomorrow

Thanks Shorty and e34play, was great to meet you . Small turnout but thoroughly enjoyable still. For the people that weren't able to make it, I'm running another for Eurosport tomorrow at 630pm. Sorry for the haphazard communication from me. We spent a decent amount of time on the basics and I went through what I look for in my photos.

Sorry guys I've been occupied and haven't had a chance to check the forum! I've attached a picture of the location. It's right down the end of Jellicoe Street. See you all there at 6:30pm

I've actually got no lighting gear and don't have any experience with artificial lighting. Everything I do has been with natural light. If you've got some gear you're welcome to bring it along and maybe you can add some insight into that side of things?

I've organised us a car to shoot - a 335i Touring. I've updated the details of the location. I did some scouting last week while shooting a RS3 (what a seriously cool car!) and the spot next to the concrete silos will work well. In terms of a backdrop it's not stunningly perfect but it's got good space and the area has backup spots if there happens to be something else occupying the space at the time. Things to bring: Your camera (preferably a Digital SLR) Tripod If you don't have any equipment, you're still welcome to come along and learn. It's not going to be too formal so you can team up, look over people's shoulders or borrow my camera.

Hey everyone, I'm running a free automotive photography workshop for Bimmersport members. In this workshop, I'll cover off the process I go through in performing the photoshoot. Depending on the skill level of people that turn up, I'll cover the basic fundamentals of photography as well. The workshop will be hands on, we'll have a car to shoot and I'll tutor and guide as we go through the shoot. We won't be using artificial lighting, I'll just be using a middle of the range consumer DSLR and a tripod. Something that everybody can own without too much difficulty. By the end of the workshop, the intention is that you'll be able to take the skills away to shoot your own car . I've been predominantly amateur up until recently when I decided to turn professional. What I want to get out of doing the workshop is just getting my name out there and meeting some cool people with a likeminded passion of cars and photography . The details of the workshop are as follows: Date: Wednesday 25th January 2012 Time: 6:30pm Location: Down the end of the Wynyard quarter, on the concrete pad next to the six large concrete silos and superyachts Some of you may know me from this photo I took of crazyarab's old E30 325 M-Tech2. A long time ago now! If you're keen on coming along, please post here with confirmation of your attendance so I can get an idea of numbers. If you have any questions, you can email me at [email protected] or give me a call. Cheers! Victor 021 168 7661 www.victoryuen.co.nz P.S. I'll be looking for a car as a model. Would anyone have an interesting car to shoot and wouldn't mind coming along for the workshop? I prefer a non-black car as black cars are much more difficult to shoot. Edit: I'm going to be away from the 3rd till the 15th of January so I won't be replying to this thread during this time

Thanks . I've just been going through a long process of working out what I want to be doing next year and I've just put together a plan which is very exciting. I've now committed myself to progressing my photography and put aside a few other business interests in the meantime. I've been spinning around in circles for the past year so it feels great to just focus on my automotive photography.

Hey everyone, I've been having a bit of trouble finding one on the other forums (and through people I know) and I want to see if any of you guys have an old single/double garage that I could do a photoshoot in. I'm looking for something that is a typical kiwi DIY workshop/garage with character to it - in Auckland. If anybody has anything, email me at vkhyuen at gmail.com or pm me a picture. Or you could post a picture here if you don't mind showing your garage off publicly . Just so you know I'm not a complete stranger/stalker, I did some of the shots for a good friend of mine on here, crazyarab aka Atta. Some of my recent work is here www.photomotive.co.nz Cheers in advance! Victor.

Thanks for the comments everyone. Funny you should say it looks like Lord of the Rings, that's Mt Doom of Mordor in the background

Okay Atta, I got your hint . Here's a treat for you. I'd have to say this is probably one of the best pieces I've ever done. I'm quite happy with it! I'm currently away so I can't upload larger versions due to bandwidth but I've given the original files to Atta so he can resize and distribute for wallpapers. Enjoy!
-
Haha not a bad job at all Atta! Looks pretty good to me

Hot off the camera! Taken up in the Port Hills of Christchurch. Beaaaautiful car, would love to own one myself! Some more available here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/viktro/sets/72157623111760026/

Haha it wasn't that expensive compared to some of the cameras out there. It's a Sony Alpha 300 with a 18-80mm Carl Zeiss lens. I previously shot with a Sony DSC-R1 and this is my first shoot with the Alpha. Looks like I still need to get used to the camera, or unfreeze my hands as it looks like a lot of my photos were out of focus and/or exposed incorrectly. Next time we'll find a warmer day with a more interesting backdrop. Thanks for the positive feedback, those M3's are pretty mint. Makes me want one myself! Here's one that's tweaked to fix my boo boos.
