  1. interested in your machine.nice colour combo

so from what i gather, no traction control and no LSD?

someone didnt tick a box or two?also, are there arm rests in the front

    cheers marty

    Hey Marty,

Why thanks - Its certainly a good looker - Amazing what a nice colour does, Ive seen so many of these in dull colours that don't complement the body shape at all.

Yeah, No TRC or LSD in this one.

    Also no Arm rests either.

As of tonight I've reduced the price down to $5000, lowest I would take, but need the money for film gear asap.

It is a shame to sell it as these are terrific cars, but I need to let go and put my money where I actually have to for my studies.

    :)

  2. Good luck with your sale.

What's up with E34 540i's for sale lately?!?!?

    Cheers.

I don't want to sell it but I have to really! At least I'll know what to buy next time when I'm after a sedan, probably go for an manual one next time (if I could find one) or a E39 540i M. I'm sure they will be cheap as anything in the coming years.

  3. Hey,

Well unfortunately I'm selling my recently acquired 540ia, I would rather keep it but need to free up some funds for a cheaper vehicle, and a range of video/pc equipment for my studies.

I'm leaving it up for a month so if it doesn't sell I will be keeping it.

Here are the key points about it.

    254,000kms

    Blue Metallic in great condition

17" Alloys with good 245 Federal tires.

    Tidy interior

    Runs perfectly.

Recent oil change/wheel bearings/coolant/radiator and a few other things

Only problem with it is the control arm bushes are causing a shimmy at 80-100km/h which is rather annoying and not good for the other components, I would expect it to be sorted and fixed for about $500 for both sides, cheaper if you do it yourself, though it will need and alignment afterward I would imagine.

Heres the Trade Me auction for pictures and more details

    http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing.aspx?id=210356988

    After around $6000

    Cheers, Mike.

  4. If you're buying in the 3-5k bracket you're obviously looking at an auto as manuals still fetch decent money as they are rarer. In which case I would buy a 323i. I have owned a 325i auto and while a good car, they are annoying in auto as the transmission is forever hunting for the correct gear to keep the engine in the sweet spot of the rev range. the M52 in the 323i has more torque and therefore a much better drive in auto.

Yeah Mark thats what I was thinking today actually,

I would like a manual for a change but Id be stretching my budget out for one, starting at around 6-7k for anything decent. Therefore an automatic one would suit me best, remembering this is going to be A-B car, does not need to be the sports version so an auto 323i would probably be the most logical, though Ill have to keep and eye on the gearboxes as like many automatics they can get issues...

  5. Right well, I like my 540i enough not to want to drive it around every day.

Rather keep it for the weekends and 'sporty' events as such...

So I'm going to be looking around for a daily driver thats fairly decent once Ive sold my Soarer, Ive concluded it will be a BMW, realized now they are where its at - sick to death of my boring Toyota's.

Im thinking my best bet would be a E36 series, they seem rather plentiful and relatively cheap for what you get, Seems around 3.5-5k will get you a good genuine 323i or 325i sedan... After one with the M52 straight six, not interested in the 4 cylinder options as int he 316/318's... Ehh.

Basically wanting to know, what are the key areas to look out for when buying one? Ive read the rear areas can be prone to rust and suspension mounts/bushes can play up (like any car)... Anything really important to check on any I look at?

    Cheers guys.

    Mike.

  6. So I ended up spending less than half what I budgeted for...

and got a 1994 e34 540iA SE, NZ new, full service history @ BMW it's whole life.

Body work needs a good cut and polish (it's been parked outside for a good few years now), and it has a few key marks and other scrapes, but overall it's in pretty good knick.

    Pics to come!

Nice, I look forward to seeing pictures too.

  7. Hey there,

My E34 540i has a problem where at around 80-85kms there is a rather violent shake going on, enough so that the interior giggles about including the passenger seat...

It becomes less noticeable at 90-100 but is still there, however at 110-120kms is not there. Bellow 85km's its fine though I do fell a vibration under heavyish acceleration at around 30.

So far Ive checked the wheel balance. I've ruled out it is to do with the suspension, as you dont feel anything through the front wheels.

Just replaced the Flex Disk Guibo, makes for a smoother drive but still the problem is there, just not as bad.

Any ideas on what my Issue is?

  8. Right, I have my E34 540i with its factory system.

A great factory system, keeps it nice and quiet, though I want it to actually sound like a V8...

As far as I know these older exhaust systems don't mind being tampered with - from memory the later 90's E39's and E38 have those qwerky tuned systems which if removed or replaced with other gear can cause them to actually loose power.

For mine I was thinking of a full header back system Remove the cats, mid mufflers and rear...

Replacing it with 2.25" tube, an X pipe as close to the headers as possible, leading down on the left side to a dual inlet/outlet Remus muffler or something of that high quality type - what other decent compact chambered mufflers are out there available here in NZ that would fit into the exhaust cavity on the E34's?

Any recommendations would be good - as to what you have done on your V8 BMW's etc.

    Mike.

  9. thhats my thoughts at the mo.i wonder if you can bypass it and have manual control only of seats and mirrors

Yeah thats an idea, might be tricky but dont see why I couldnt just rewire it under their neatly so all the motors have a direct feed to the power cable.

Then again, the mirrors might be the next issue with that... will look into it as I need to take the seat out to replace a motor tomorrow so will see what the go is.

Might open up the box in that time and see if there are any components that could be replaced - old caps perhaps could be the culprit or bad relays?

  10. Hi guys,

After searching for a few days I have not really found what my issue is here.

Basically the electric seats and power mirrors work when they feel like it, some times not at all and sometimes straight away.

Its like power gets cut to them at a certain point in time weather its parked up or your driving or at the traffic lights.... just seems to be totally random.

    However its extremely annoying.

I thought one cause could be the seat switch but that does not seem plausible in this situation.

My guess is a power loss of some sort? Like a relay sticking, or having bad contacts??

Any information / help / a solution to this would be excellent! This is an E34 540i 1993.

    Cheers

    Mike
