  1. Someone is going to pick up a good deal. Hopefully someone from on here. Our BMW family of motors look deceptively the same within reason, which is great for us motor swappers!

Even if you told most mechanics that you have increased the capacity from X to X+ whatever, you can see that most of them wouldn't even be bothered doing the maths if it took longer than 4 seconds to work it out. So that's 800cc odd added to 2000cc and 800 divided by...she be right mate!

No one has look at or even questioned my 3000 to 4000. Why would you?

  2. That's cheap new per tyre. But they aren't that flash. Not a bad tyre, just not a stunning tyre either. The best set up for my coupe I thought out of all the various combo's was 245/40-17 all round fyi. But buying new in this size is a bit more expensive which is why I always went premium used with matching pairs. Just my opinion.

  3. Yayyyyy.

Glad it finally works for you.

You'll notice it will get off the line a lot quicker now and the shift points for changing gear will have changed too.

    Have fun.

Well, it already had a superchips chip for the 3.0,and it ran well, not optimal, but well. Now , more so I guess. Put it this way. I am more than happy. After having gone through all the work of transplanting the 4.0, mucking around with valley pans, welding stuff to remove rounded and busted nuts, and all that grief, getting a custom flywheel made and all, knowing that the engine runs more or less as good as it can, some may say better than factory, without costing as much as one Bilstein insert. Hell yeah.

Cant stay in first very long when I hit the loud pedal, and the additional torque means, I can meander around town in 4th a very low speeds.

I would recommend this to everyone who has a 540i I guess pretty easily.

  4. O.K.

So the package arrived today. Full DME with the chip in it ready to go.

So 4 big philips screws undone, and I am a pro at this now, cover off, remove spring loaded clips, remove DME, unplug, plug in the new one reverse the process and kick it in the guts.

It turns over straight away, the exhaust seems slightly louder, maybe smoother? But its only idling, so I let idle for 5 mins before I take it for a fang.

Yes, it feels different, it's not that it was ever slow, but now the exhaust is definately louder, it bellows more, more of a cyclic exhaust note, not just louder. Then it actually crackles when you take your foot off the gas, I thought you needed carbs for that, it actually sounds very very meaty.

Keep in mind I have removed the rear box on mine, thats the only change exhaust wise,

Worth the wait, dunno, I hardly use the brute, but it is seriously too fast to drive in anger on the road, as soon as you give it the berries, you run out of road.

    I love it. Worth it.

I will FB DUDMD and tell him it was a raging success. In future...not that I am intending to do this again, I would ay extra just to have the whole shebang couried over for ease of use, literally plug and play.

    Thank you for following.

    Another happy customer!!!

  5. DUDMD said he has had the odd 404 DME not work. He is going to send one over with the chip installed. Then plug that sucker in and it better work!!! Its good weather now and we need to drive our beastie cars.

It does mean of course that I have 2 spare DUDMD chips that should work by right in any other 404 DME. But lets see how this new thing goes first, before we get carried away.

  6. I am using the original DME a 404 jobbie, I think that's what you are referring to?

DUDME sent me just a little chip...then another little chip. I need to get a hold of him actually. I have 2 either brilliant chips that I cannot get going, or 2 dud's that should be refunded.

As the car goes well (I have no other reference) I might just call it a day on this one, I will wait to see what he says.

  7. So after a time, DUDMD sent another chip, it took another 2 weeks. It didn't work, I even took the 'middle' base off where the original chip goes, and then back to front and it just didn't want to turn over. Iput the original in and it started as per usual. So its xmas. I will get someone a bit more betterer than me to have a look at it. It's just a chip, but I cant get the ruddy thing to go, so let's wait after the xmas period.

Who wants to help me? The chances they are both duds are slight so I could be doing something wrong.

    Auckland.

  8. I saw this too. I cant imagine rebuilding one of these is worth it, knowing you can get a secondhand motor for about a grand or 2, and that will last you 10 years maybe? It's only stock so the advantages would be minimal. 2.8k is pretty steep and then you still have to finish assembling it. Parts are eye watering for bmw's, I wouldn't rebuild one of these V8's unless I was doing a serious performance motor, and even then, I would have to question the maths, because then you might as well just go the whole hog and get this...

Now that miiiggghhhttttt be worth it. Just maybe.

  9. the e34 is pretty well balanced, its why the battery is in the boot

I could use my battery as a door stop to the gates of hell. It really is that heavy. Mind you 850CCA was always going to be on the heavy side. I might look into one of those flash Lithium jobbies in the future. The future is light, bright, and well effin expensive.

Some of the race guys will chime in I hope, I mean they put their cars on stricter diets than they would themselves probably.

  10. As the title suggests.

Where do you go to weigh your car? I am interested to see how much my beloved behemoth weighs. I would also like to know where that weight is.

NZ Autocar weigh some of the cars they roadtest, and as far as I know I don't know of any other mainstream car magazine that does.

It is interesting to see if cars with more 'ideal' weight balance fare any better. I am guessing race car peeps know where and how this is done.

    Anyone?

Oh and after I go and weigh my car, I guess I will decide on whether it goes on Paleo or just a full detox. Maybe I will just go on paleo or full detox if I am close to happy.ha.

  11. Im looking at ordering a rebuild kit for the M62. Pelicans Total is $6500 USD incl shipping. How did you find ECS Tuning in comparison to Pelican?

Well both have their merits. ECS have stuff Pelican just don't have. Freight for both are good in terms of speed. ECS is cheaper nearly all of the time. Weight is the biggest issue, and you will have to keep that in mind. You are going to be taxed heavily for that I am guessing, due to the sheer cost of that kit. The weight is going to cost you a pretty penny too. A rebuild kit cannot be light. As a privateer it will be more expensive, I think bringing in things via a company is cheaper.

Find out the total costs from both companies and go from there?

  12. Thanks guys, yeah it wouldn't look out of place on a wee midget looking thing. You don't get simple directional patterns like this anymore, they are all flash now, with 3D chamfered slopes and stuff. I have to buy some front tyres, so I am weighing up a few ideas there. Some semi track tyres would make sense in a way, because the stagger is going to be quite savage, so I can only close the margin by getting much grippier tyres for the front. In theory that will make up for the lack of grip relative to the rear. Well that's my theory anyway.

Hope to be spraying the leather tomorrow if it's fine enough and not too windy. Then I can re-assemble the seats and put them in, everything that is also leather can wait for a bit.
