  1. Hi @Mad_Max, I've probably gone as far as I want to stripping this thing. If you're still keen on the manual set-up and want to come and pick up the remains, lets arrange it. My other option is Simms Metal at this point.
  2. I've just recovered this car from a friends place. It has sat on a bush covered driveway for about 10 years or so. It's a manual, with about 300,000kms on the clock. It ran well before being parked up but, the rust is strong with this one. I don't want it on my front garden for long so if please get in touch if you're interested in parts. Really we're talking about lights, glass and perhaps some trim parts etc... The bonnet may be OK, and the boot with some repair work. All other panels / doors are toast. The interior has been damp and is mouldy. Sorry if this add bends some of the rules. I actually have no idea what these parts are worth. Left tail light $20.00 (chipped) Right tail light $100 Left and right head light clusters $100 each Windscreen, rear screen, window glass are all in good condition. $150 for front screen, $50 for the others Motor and gearbox unknown. You'd have to want them pretty badly because I'm not that keen to get them out of the car! $500.00 ono Let me know if there's something you want me to pull of the car.   3. I have some long overdue work to do to my trusty daily. It's a manual 525e circa 1987 in citrusblau. Not so worried about external colour matching but the interior is blue, and I'd prefer to avoid doing a wholesale interior change... then again, most of it's coming out so I'd look at it. Mechanicals are mostly all great. I need body and interior parts. Namely: Straight bonnet Rust free sunroof Drivers doorcard A good dash would be awesome but, then I'd quite like it if my hair would grow back too. #hendentures Gear lever mechanism complete. I understand that Z3 ones work? Full carpet set Headlining Tail lights Bonus points: Mesh rims would be a bonus (can't remember the type no.). Bilstein suspension Medium case LSD Drivers lights Bigger brakes that will fit and still allow a range of rims I need to 'panel and paint' the car so the bonus items may not make the budget and are less of a priority If you have a rust free, (or close to it) car with mechanical issues i.e. bad motor/box etc.. that has a nice interior I'd readily look at that.   4. About 6 months ago, on the way up the reallyfarawyfromanybloodywhere side of the Lewis Pass, my E28's camshaft seized, then almost immediately snapped. Valves met pistons in a dishearteningly non-convivial setting. sh*t got bent. 'p-Ping!' it went. This is a 'hey all, thanks for the support' post sorted it review. The encouragement made a difference. After chats here, I grabbed my uncle, hired a trailer and went and collected it the next weekend (a 1300km round trip). It's a been a long time coming but I finally got everything in and running again. I replaced the engine in the end with a 105km plug and play replacement from a one owner 525ee auto - the low kms appealed and I figured I could just put it in and assuming it was as good as it said on the box, relax after that rather than grabbing something cheap but very probably worn to hell. It was a big job for me, with some experience but nothing quite on that scale but I learned a heap along the way and the garage got a bit of a make-over too. After some faffing about getting it started it cranked right up and purred like a kitten. For interest, while in there I replaced: - cam belt - tensioner - water pump - front seals - cam cover gasket - sump gasket - rear main seal - cutch slave cylinder - exedy clutch plate - exedy pressure plate and the dual-mass flywheel was thankfully in good nic (they're eye-wateringly expensive) so I left it well alone. So, it's back to it's silky smooth self. I've of course spent more than the car is probably worth (though, actually still less than 3k including recovery...) but I'm really glad I did it. It's going to get some more love in the next year so it looks as good as it drives. Thought I'd share the good feels.
  5. Hey all, thanks for the help. It was the power line from the battery. The non-start problem was (as usual) pretty ridiculously simple in the end. The 12volt tongue plug needed to go onto the -other- connector UNDERNEATH the solenoid, which I couldn't see until I went under the car to check other things. It cranked over after that. Still didn't start until we worked out that the fuel lines to the rail were reversed. As soon as that was sorted, it fired up and purred like a kitten after just a few revolutions. So good.
  6. I think I actually had it right the first time - thanks for that, it will be easy to test that loop at least, then I can work out why it didn't want to play first time around. Or just look at it blankly and make another cup of tea.
  7. [M20 B27 in an E28] Hi bimmer people, Help a fulla out here. I've reassembled everything for my e28 after the engine failure a while back. The engine in the bay now is a replacement M20B27. It's all gone pretty smoothly apart from this mystery cable. It looks like it wants to go to the starter motor and I've seen some images on the web that show something like this i.e. black goes to same positive terminal as the red... but under the black sheath it looks like brown plastic and it looks like an earth cable... I didn't work connected to the starter - not even a click. No hot smells or anything either thankfully. Is it safe to just connect it to the block / body to see if I'm right? Or am I likely to burn something out? Thanks in advance... Tom

  10. Hi BM people Does anyone have one of these lying around? [ no.7 in the diagram ] mine somehow went west when I was degreasing. The car is a 1987 E28 525e but I think these springs are the same across many models around this era, including into E36 (assuming a 260 box). I'm trying to get everything up and running this weekend so if you can help I'd be pretty happy! Cheers, Tom

Classy car driving people of Earth, I want to replace the gear lever in my car as a previous owner has cut it down rather brutally, the knob spins around annoyingly and it appears to be bent too. The box itself is a Getrag 260. Will gear levers from other models with the 260 fit mine? Do any of you fine people have one I might nab? Cheers, Tom

    Yes! Was surprised to see that had gone. I'm guessing the shock to the valve gear did that rather than movement in the head. I've bought a replacement M20b27 from a low kms (115km) car which has just had cam belt work in the last 5k kms. It arrives in 10 days or so. The old block I'll put aside and look to build a stroker or something over the next little while. Will knock off a few other jobs along the way.

    Yep, cheers Justin. It's tricky. I really want to keep it going but it will be all of the that. I haven't seen b27s come up all that often, but I'm sure I could find one, then as you've mentioned, belts, seals, tstat etc... Then all the other niggly little things that are still wrong with it...

    So this is what I found today when I finally got it open. Cambelt OK but little tension to speak of, a broken camshaft and 6 bent valves... Must have loosened off and jumped some teeth. Not sure what to think of this because I remember following the steps/torque settings to the letter (belt had far more tension when I did the work). Distinctly possible I got something wrong though! Belt, tensioner and various other parts came from BnT. Not OEM needless to say. Question: What would the general consensus be re sorting the head / replacing it and putting it back together. Are the pistons crank likely to be OK - they are virtually unmarked.

    Thanks guys. Trailer booked, heading over on Saturday early and we'll get the old girl home and decide what to do after that. Probably fix and work over a bunch of other niggles at the same time. In case anyone is interested, the cost to get it transported from Springs Junction to central Dunedin was $750 + GST. Probable cost to go get it inc trailer rental and gas is going to be around $450.00 and a road trip with my uncle so overall not as much sting as it could have been. Cheers, Tom

    Ok... so crank seal must have let go a little while back and an oily cambelt followed, at pace yesterday on the west side of lewis pass while heading back to dunedin. It's currently secure thanfully. Its a manual e28 525e. Not immaculate but sound, 245kms. I like the car, othwise this would be a no brainer. I have to either go get it this weekend or go get the stuff in it before leaving it for scrap OR get it transported back to DN. Talk sense to me please! Or sell me your 2.7 ETA engine.

  19. I love my old thing [ 1987 E28 525e manual ]. I've owned a lot of cars over the years and raced and rallied in past too and this car is right up there in terms of favourites. It's rough and I paid under 2K for it but it's straight and rust free and keeps on giving. Bought at 185ks and have done 45,000km in it in the last 2 years. It get's no quarter either. I've done: Shocks, Front control arms, cam belt, w'pump, tensioners and seals and a muffler. Brakes had had a fettle before I bought it so it pulls up straight and handles with huge poise for biggish car. I think any e28 with an unruly back-end (especially in the league of 911s!!!) has to be seriously in need of some maintenance. I rate the cars handling (mine is stock). It needs: Paint! Dash redo, stupid factory in-cluster batteries relocated and replaced, sunroof drains cleared, Basket-weaves, a limited slip diff and well, I do fantasise about a low pressure turbo for a little more push but that's really for the lotto win. The rest though will probably happen because it really deserves it. Finally, check this out. From 2:30 or so on. Annoying sound drop-outs but I enjoy the chuckles from the driver watching the E28 in front.
  20. That lip would never survive my possum count... Actually the standard one is barely coping. Both the little flaps that hide the towing eyes are gone and the standard (alluminium?) valence has at least one slight reversed impression of the now, furrily departed. If you look carefully, you can make its last surprised expression. Otherwise would be into it. Of course then I'd need to make the rest of the car look better too...
  21. Looking for a boot lid for my e28. It's a 525e - Car is Steel Blue from memory - be good if I could get it in the same - cars paint is not flash so I'm not fussy if the clear coat is poor.
