  1. Hey people, I've done something kinda dumb - long story, won't bore you but I fed a hook through a hole in the sheet metal just below the boot latch (body side) then closed the boot. It won't open now of course, doesn't matter whether locked or not and the central locking appears to be still working via key and from unlocking at the front doors... I believe the lock mechanism itself is fine, but the hook is obstructing the release of the catch. Two questions: do any of you know a way into an e28 boot that doesn't involve cutting?! wall behind the back seat is solid steal. do any of you have a boot lid that I can buy if I have get the tin opener out? e30 boots are apparently identical. Colour is light metalic blue. It's one of those ridiculous problems... Of course the boot was/is full of camping gear and food for the weekend just gone by... Cheers
  2. Cheers Brent. Would have thought camshaft / camshaft oiling would have been more rackety in the way of valve trains.. but good to hear anyway. Oil change tonight before some road tripping over the weekend so will keep an ear on it and if it's all going pear-shaped well then I might be in touch! t
  3. People of the world! I've noticed a bit of a knock on cold start in the morning. It is not audible inside the car once underway and once the engine is warmed up all is quiet. It's hard to pin down where it's coming from in the engine bay... but it is a knock, rather than a tap/valve gear noise, if I'm any judge. Sounds like 1/revolution. The car is an E28 525e, with the ETA 2.7. It's done 208,000kms though the previous owner/s wasn't all that big on maintenance. Starts and pulls well otherwise and there are no warning lights showing beyond the oil change schedule thingo. Any thoughts? Cheers all, Tom

    BBS for E28

Hi people, http://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/car-parts-accessories/wheels-tyres/alloy-wheels/auction-705095783.htm Vague question but I'm sure some of you will recognise the style of these wheels... Does anyone have an idea if these BBS rims would fit my e28? They come from a 318IS. Stud patern is prolly all good but the offset may well not be.
  5. Yep, Allan, it's getting pretty warm. Ran it up over Arthurs Pass a couple of weekends ago and it got very hot, just short of the red, no steam or signs of boiling thankfully but closer than I'd like. On a trip it gets warmer than it should when slowing down through the towns. Pretty sure the fan clutch is done. The radiator has also never had a shroud in my ownership, which may also be an issue. Did these cars have them from factory does anyone know? Hear what you're saying though re replacement though. I should get a price for a new one at least. 3pedals, will PM shortly.
  6. Hey all, The viscous fan on my e28 ETA is not engaging fully anymore so rather than replacing it I thought I might remove it and fit an electric fan instead. Has anyone done something like this / have suggestions for fitting a fan from a later model? Any thoughts on it very welcome. I'm not the most electrically literate but I think I could sort it with the right advice.. Tom
  7. After a winder for my sunroof (car: 525e E28 but I suspect the same was found on e30s from the 80s too) They commonly break apparantly. I pretty much just need the handle and what ever rotating parts etc, spring/clip comes with it. Am in Dunedin but I'll pay for freight... Not looking to spend too much - it's a Scottish ancestry thing Tom
  8. Will take 'em if they're still there. Can pick up.
  9. In case anyone is remotely interested, four new tires and alignment has transformed the car. The toe was 3 times the normal setting on both sides... Mental note - must do the basic stuff first! Also read previous mental notes.
  10. Did you move these? And if not, any clue if they would fit an E28?
  11. The top one - my wallet started aching the moment I set eyes on it...
  12. Hi again, I'm getting a balance and alignment done on my 525e E28 before the long drives of summer... Any set-up advice from folk out there before I take it in? It's a standard, unmodified car. Also I'm in Dunedin, any local folk have a favoured tire shop for alignment services? I've already replaced all the control-arm bushes to shut down the infamous 'shimmy' the E28s suffer from. There's still a slight hint of it at 115km/h but it feels more like a wheel balance thing. Cheers all. t
  13. Hi people, I've had my 525e for over 6 months now and apart from a computer failure in the first 24 hours, it's run well. I had the distributor cap off the other day when I replaced the cam belt, tensioner and pump. It was in a bit of a sorry state so I made a note to look into getting a new one... Checked the other day and just about fell over with the $350 ish price! Not sure what I'm asking here but have any of you fine people found cheaper options than this? The car is starting to miss a little and while economy is admirable on the open road it's pretty diabolical on my 25kms to work each day. (OK, yup, it is a heavy 6cyl car! I know...). I feel like it could run better anyway and the cap is a good place to start. Alternatively, has anyone got a good one they might part with? Tom
  14. In case anyone is vaguely interested: the fault was a bung computer. Soon as we sourced a replacement it fired up right away and has run well ever since. Still wants front wheel bearings (horribly expensive damned things), control arm bushes and vacuum hoses but for now it's good enough. Thanks for all the help. Tom
  15. Also good to know. It's cold and wet outside so I'm not all that keen to pull the rail if I can avoid it, or until I can get the car into the garage! Cheers
  16. Thanks for this - it makes sense. I've bought a new DME relay to cancel that out as a possible cause. Will have at that plug tomorrow. That link you sent through was excellent too. Cheers
  17. I did pop a plug out to check for spark - I'd call it oily/sooty rather than wet with fuel. Also we did get it firing on quick-start / ether, so the timing and ignition seem to be OK. My hunch is the injectors are not injecting...
  18. Hi all, I just bought this the other day - ran fine for two days then one morning after a long idle (warming up and de-icing the screen) it just stopped and wouldn't restart. I've checked fuses, looked at relays (don't have a meter so not much further there..) and there is heaps of fuel coming out of the front end of the fuel rail. Big blue spark from sparkplug number one too. SO I'm guessing it's a sensor that talks to the fuel injectors? I'm not great at electrics but wondering if any of you can help point toward a likely cause? Or suggest what to pull off and clean up? The car hasn't been well maintained, but it was running strong for about 100km before this. Any help much appreciated. Cheers Tom
  19. Cheers cheers, yep all looks pretty affordable. Picked it up tonight - funny how noises are much louder and more ominous when you drive a new (old) car home! Think it might need a diff inside the next year.. but hopefully they're not too hard to find. Otherwise, it goes pretty sweet.
  20. Was thinking the seals and tensioner at least. Would look at the water pump and thermostat depending on price though it seems to be behaving very well on that front. Any other advice gratefully received though! Cheers.
  21. Yup - that'd be it. I pick it up next week as it needed a ball joint for its wof and the seller is being damned decent about it and sorting out for me.
  22. Hey all. Got bored with being so damned sensible all the time so thought I'd buy something a little bit different and ended up with an E28 525e. A cruiser rather than a rocket but I've always liked the shape. No plans yet - just wait and see what trouble comes! I want to do the cam belt and associated bits pretty soon just to be sure. Any tips? - I've done them on previous cars before so not completely new to it. Seems to be a bit of space in there which is a change from the usual. Anyway. Cheers, Tom
