+1 .
yes thats why i am going back to a e34 . selling the e39 .
not that the engine is the main concern its all the %^*&*& around it that packs up.
when the M30 just keeps on going like the rabit
So maybe I should be so hastly going e34>e39 540. The 34 is supposedly the 'last' model that one can DIY on.

Glen's post: "..and the wiring loom socket seals...". BM Workshop quoted $310 plus GST plus fluid to do this on my car- but as you'd be having other work done this would be proportionately a lot less of course. I would get this done when I got a trans service- get it all done at once -worth doing

Alan is a good guy and he sold the business 2-3 years ago. The new guy is not so good. Alan still works out of Whangaparaoa (sp?), but is in the UK for 3 months. I had a ridiculous quote for work from Civic Auto in the Strand 2 years ago ($930 + GST), done for $440 incl at Bellars and I know there is another place in the Stand that charges you by how much money he thinks you have.
That's a shame Alan has gone. Where is Bellers?

Crystal Motors 11 -13 Ruru St eden Terrace Ph 09-300 7464. Close to the the top of Mt eden Rd/Upper Symonds street intersection- if that's CBD enough for you? Got service done there. No problems. everything seemed fine. Well priced.
There's also Alan Giess Autosport, 2 Graham St, Ak City 379 0217- can't comment too much about the place - only got some repairs done a while back, not servicing- Alan (owner) is a good guy. They specialise in BMW and Audi.

Is your car manual or auto? Assuming it's auto I would not have though that chipping is going to do a hell of a lot for you. Chipping comes up fairly regularly on BS. I get the impression that results are mixed but generally not particularly impressive. There are a number of other mods to accompany chipping to give a collective noticeable gain. which can add to significant $$$
If you want more performance you are probably better off strating off with a larger engine for starters. 1.6 litres is not the best place to start if you want more hp. Search previous theads.
You want noticeable gains- trade in for a 325- you should notice something straight away

Hmmm... so much info here my head is spinning. Nice write up thanks. Intersting re Holdens I did not know that some much goes wrong with them when thay get a few Ks on the clock. I LOVe the build quality on a beamer.
I am being educated- of course it's called a clubby. Your current clubby look crash hot. I kind of thought as much regarding having to pay considerably more for a low K one. I would be going for a higher K one because of the lower price. Sounds like I should be very carful or stay away, keep saving and get a low K one as you mentioned.
Same re the M5. An e39 M5 would be my choice over all else. I don't really like the newer shapee in general (especially the 5 series e60). Time soon to trade in the clubby on an M5 perhaps? With 325 Kw the Holden would rival, nay dare I say it:beat an M5 around the track surely.
The Holden is a lot cheaper to get significant power gains compared to BMW. I guess there is a lot more automotive specialist engine parts as well as mechanical shops offering affordable upgrades. Googling performance mod on an e39- it looks comparitively expensive compared to Holden- there's alot less off the shelf stuff on offer in NZ
Yeah the guy with the green (I think it was) e34 on 20's has the wrong rims- they are too modern and don't look right where as the one you've got match the era of the car well- think you've done well there.
So Holden= low Ks = spend more vs beamer= low K good, higer ks no a problem for mid $$$= seems like I might stay in the fold. Cheers for the info mate.
the clubby pics- damn that's a nice looking car.
Braeden- what's the BMW limo? link doesn't work for me
Yes there are a few 540's on TM- seems to be an injection of recent imports around 1998-2001. Prices dropping all the time. Still need my car sold so I can do something. Bloody petrol prices...but I'm looking at going e34 4.0 540----> e39 4.4 540 ... can only get worst on the wallet! but fun though
-
That would be the one.
Anyone know the car on here? 2000 Black 540 licence plate 'Area5I' ,all black on black

Arros E55 AMG Mercs are very nice, you can find a year 1999 ish import model with average Km for around 30K, which is good value , I was looking at one after I sold my last E34 540i Touring.
But ideally you really want NZ new and low km's unfortunately they're hard to find so people still ask good money when they do sell.
I ended up buying another E34 540i Touring instead, NZ new with 130km , lowered it with Vogtland Springs, stuck on Ruff Racing 20 x 8.5's all round and custom painted the wheel centres silver and polished the lips with 245/30/20 k107 Hankook Tyres, I drive it everyday and love it, it handles and goes hard! What else compares to an E34 540i for the money?
I just had it serviced by Glenn at Botany Motor Worx and would definately recommend them, this would be the first time I have had any of my cars serviced for a long time where everything that I asked to be done was done and done properly.
They fitted up the new updated Silver Indicator lights and disconnected the Camber link arm and secured in neutral position to stop the dash light coming on since the rear is lowered. And the price was very reasonable thanks Glenn.
Heres some pics.
Adam
Yes the AMG E55 is nice... oh but for the price.
What else compares to an E34 540i for the money?= exactly
I had kind of dismissed a Touring- thought it a bit too grandma, grandad 'family wagon' type of car but yours has made me think again. Do the rear seats fold? I'm thinking no. Does it have real stationwagon sized space in the back?
Clear indicators (like mine) on the back maybe?- I think the original look just fine- might look to mono tone- with all lights silver/clear.
-
Adam, that is a very nice car sir! You must have beaten Brent to this one me thinks.
Those 20's look just the ticket- nice!
Guess you be keeping it for a while with all the money you've spent. Everything you've done is prob
what I'd like to do on a 540.
Read your profile re Holdens. The clubsport would be quicker than the beamer by quite a bit but as you say the beamer is a nicer ride. Have been thinking of a v8 Holden as an alternative. Would you recommend one?
Hey if you ever think of selling the touring.... but why would you!
I have heard many good things about Botany Motor Worx- should try them
Love the car Adam. Have you got sounds in the car or standard (which is pretty good anyway)
-
No its mostly because they got no balls??? LOL
Just bought a E34 535. Knowing that the patrol price could now go up as high as 2.80per litre.
But seriously, you might be paying a little extra for patrol than say your average boring corolla or a pulsar to save some bucks but I would pay that extra anyday for
1st Comfort and Safety this car is known for
2nd Class
my 2c
Hell yeah. I'd rather have a higher running cost and have a beamer over the cars you mentioned (all jap cars really) for the points you mentioned. Anyway this is bimmersport and we are all 'the converted' (no preaching necessary)-
And yes a 4 ltr car has higher running cost than most beamers but I love it

No. In Sylvia Park Pack n Save carpark, Auckland yesterday

'Area 51'? Plate check says it belongs to a Honda Integra. either I've got a letter wrong or the plate has been reassigned recently. It was on a black e39. Quite a fitting plate: black on black (nice dark tints) and indicators. Pretty sure black wheels too- can see how the car gets under the radar. Looked mean. Wondered what it was.

E34s dont have much rust or body issues to worry about?
No problems with rust on e34's. Would had to have been neglected or from the salted roads of the UK to have any rust issues. Had no problems with my 535. Good tips from Kiwi535. ALso keep the antifreeze levels up in the coolant system (though that's standard stuff anyways)
-
Yes tis a nice car. Not as much bodykit going on as I'd expect for an AMG- possibly on account of it being 'RARE FACTORY AMG' whatever that means. I'd go for an AMG 55 yes, though spending that dosh i'd prob hold out for a manual motorsport beamer. Thanks Jeremy
-
What about a AMG E55.
Would need to se waht it is- prob outside my budget. Chr
-
More like newer but downgrading?
Not going to argue with you on that one-least while I still own an e34
-
Good luck with the sale mate, it looks really nice in white and has tones more appeal than the run of the mill Jap import E39.
Are you upgrading?
Kinda thinking of an e39 530/540. 3 series too small, 7 series to big: 5 Series just right
-
What sort of thing are you looking to trade on?
Looking at the e39 540. (Thanks Silver Fox- though I may still agree it's a 'downgrade' (least while I still got an e34) Particularly like the v8. Been thinking about Holden but... a real one I can't afford... Can't get so excited about Holdens now, probably stick with beamer, wife suggest a Subaru: No thanks... Merc's: Kinda interesting I suppose though no model particularly appeals- something slightly pimped- Do Merc do V8's me wonders
-
Silver Fox you are probably quite corrrect. If someone is looking for a beamer then yes, if they are looking an e39 then less chance. Yes again to a 3 series e36. e34's go for less depending on model. 'Standard' e34 540's do go for less, some asking more. Depend what someone is looking for. It is interesting how cheap you can pick em up for...if I only had more time to spend looking at Turner's auctions- darn it
-
Cheers guys. Car is certainly taking longer to sell... possibly people are thinging twice re petrol prices. Guess the reason why I can afford to run it is that recently it has mainly been a weekend car. Though if I was driving it 5-6 days a week I probably make cuts elsewhere so that I'd still be enjoying it- all about one's priorities
-
She's still for sale chaps...
