  1. Hi team,

Thought I'd put this up here:

    http://www.trademe.co.nz/browse/listing.aspx?id=699434203&/listing?rfm=1

Very good family friends are selling their compact. Can't say much about it as I've never seen it properly in person, but I can vouch that they are BMW enthusiasts and take good care of their cars.

Any idea how much they're worth? I just hope they get themselves a fair deal.

    Cheers

  2. Oh my... That looks terrific!

What kind if suspension is that on? Msport springs with stock?

That looks like it won't get up my driveway lol!

Absolutely love the tech1 with proper skirts. I hope you understand how rare those skirts are! Looks so amazing. What is she needing to be road legal?

  3. :( That one in Napier has sold.

IMHO Once you swap that motor to non-original your resale is going to be equal to the collection of parts rather than any collectable value.

I fully agree Chris. I think the train of thought for this potential modification was just a slight upgrade, without leaving the "collectible" zone. Ernst suggested keeping my 2.0 top half and replacing the bottom with a 2.5 to improve low range output. 2.7 would be better as apparently more 2.0 parts are the same for 2.7.

The price for the half swap job was relatively low I think, compared to fitting in an M50 or something.

I might hold you to your M springs though Chris (god damn it you have everything I need and even maybe-need!) After I get my friend out to measure his stock cab vs the driveway monster I'll let you know.

  4. Car colours in Albany is where I go. $30 retail for 1 can, but one of the guys loves e30s and sells them to me for $25. Real quick, plus they open on Saturday mornings too.

You just gotta tell them the colour code and you'll be off

  5. I wonder what's wrong with the body?? From what little I see, that is a great deal, basketweaves, fog lights, 2.5L, relatively low km and cirrusblau to boot!

I saw it and actually almost bought it for some reason. Trying to justify it as a parts car as the weaves and fog lights can happily go into my current one, and maybe I can swap engines....

    Also a cheapy:

It is certainly vert season! I still remember trying to find one for 4-5 months last year...

  6. Whilst walking toward's Ernst's garage this afternoon, I immediately spotted and recognised a familiar looking E30 tech2 calypso cab sitting in the garage door.

Turns out someone actually finally bought the cab that was listed on Trademe for a while. Looked like there was quite a bit of work for it (oh mann), but I look forward to seeing it's progress!

  7. Alrighty, quick update. The fuel pump has died on Sunday and has been promptly diagnosed and repaired by Ernst from Bavarian Motors. While we were there I had him look for where my slight oil leak was, as well as offer some insight into my cooling system. I noticed my coolant levels had dropped around 20mm over the last few months, and my temperature gauge rising now to 3/4, from 1/4 originally.

I had thought it was an old and leaky water pump, as I thought I was hearing the characteristic whining during the first 10 seconds after starting each morning. Apparently its leaky pump onto belts which then whine until they dry out.

Turns out the oil/water seal on the headgasket has begun to deteriorate, allowing some oil and water to escape. Fortunately the headgasket side of things is still holding, but she'll be due for a replacement next few weeks/month.

Ernst has thrown up the idea of swapping the 320 bottom end for a 2.5 or even 2.7 half, since we'll be opening her up anyway. So now I am starting a general lookout and hunt for a 2.5L or 2.7L engine. Otherwise it'll just be to replace the headgasket in the 2.0 and call it a day.

Might sell the Tech1 to help fund this endeavour, although I'll still need to sit on it and digest these thoughts for a bit.

  8. Yeah can anyone offer insight into why you wouldn't insure your rare BMW that gets parked in the side of the road? I see insurance for things like these a necessity. You only pay for other stuff once the insurance box gets ticked.

Can't speak too much given the sparse information though. He may have been between changing insurance or something.

Good thing he was a photographer though. The photo of the crash is pretty good. Wonder if it was his and he got paid for it!

  9. That is certainly cheap. But the vert was looking pretty rough aesthetically, from what I could see from the images at least.

Just trying to think of what kind of person would buy it and what they'd be thinking. Too rough to look sweet for cruising without a bit of money to fix? Can't think of anyone who would rock a scruffy cab as a daily driver? But would anyone want a scruffy Sunday car? They are great for sunny days I guess.. Mmm

  10. I'm sure you know this already but you can get the same OEM coded paint and some good clearcoat both in aerosol for around $25 each from car colours in Albany. May help you if you can't find one in the right colour.

I painted the panel in my tech1 spoiler and it worked real well. Am going to do the same for the entire kit one day. Although I might buy a bottle and use the gravity gun, as using aerosol to apply clear coat is a little time consuming, relatively speaking.

  11. Yep, completely true. Any chance I could get a rough price for a fuel pump replacement job? I've had the car moved to a workshop in the middle of the night, would like to know if I'm paying a fair rate.

  12. Had Mr AA-roadside-man come so I could get her towed back home. Started freaking out a bit as soon as he was surprised the bonnet hinged at the front for E30s!

Sprayed some aerosol fuel in the intake and cylinders started firing, so prob not crank angle. He determined it was fuel related. Looking afterwards online it seems that it could be pressure regulator or something.

Now I have to wait until like 3.30am for the cradle tow truck to come! Happy about going to the airport at 5am tomorrow.... Good times

  13. 50L/60L, so its not fuel supply.

Cleaned the sensors after I cooled the area with water. The Bosch blue connector seals are relatively waterproof, but I cleaned and wiped the exterior dry with a clean rag, then disconnected and saw no moisture in the blade terminals.

  14. Bad news... E30 cab usually takes a few extra cranks to start when parked on a slope. Yesterday I parked on a slope and came back to start it 1 hour later and it sounded terrible. Really rough idle, really weak spluttering, sounded like only some of the cylinders were firing. Looked it up in the net and saw a myriad if possibilities, but it seemed like the high temp was a cause of it (bad info from hot sensor going into ecu producing incorrect map?)

Anyway, took the other car and came back 7 hours later around 1am, started her up no problem and drove her back into the garage.

Went to lunch this morning, started up completely fine and parked up in Newmarket. Came back 2 hours later and hot car starts spluttering and idling really weak again. Left it with the bonnet up and gently cooled the sensor section of the head with some slightly cool water. 2 hours later engine is only slightly warm, but now the car only cranks and doesn't fire any of the cylinders..

Looking on the net there are sooo many possibilities, sounds like a pretty expensive endeavor of troubleshooting.

Any tips? Currently sitting and weeping waiting for another car to come and pick me up so I can go to work some overtime (already 3 hours late!) for no pay :(:(:(

  15. Faded black plastic livens up quite a bit with some meguiars trim detailer. Give it a go for the mirrors and grille? I've got some here you can have a hoon with it. Works pretty well on my e30.

Its not permanent though. Few weeks and you'll have to re-wipe. Also have a can of SEM trim black if you wanna see how it looks man

I'm a little skeptical of colour matching the mirrors as I love the trim features on Bmws.
