I can't work out what's "rare" (referring to the advert).  An e30 coupe?  The Toyota V8?

    I'll get my coat...

Me too, for a sec I was like did they actually do a 340?!

There must be valid reasons, but if one was to build such a rarity, would you not opt for a Bavarian 8? Cool car none the less.

  3. The rain stopped and the sun came out at about 6 this evening, so got back under the car, finished bolting up a few brackets etc and pumped the fluid back into the trans.  Took it for a drive and it's all working the way it's supposed to, even the Alpina flash is still doing the business :D  New (to me) engine and gearbox transplanted successfully at last - it's only taken me about 13 months and I don't know how much $$$$!  Next time (shudder the thought) someone says they'll do the swap for $1500, I'll jump at it!

  4. Good stuff Matt!  Probably a bit like my old Polo 1.8t when I put a Milltek catless downpipe on it.  Mine was one of the ones that didn't have a central resonator standard, so without the cat, it was just a bit too loud for my liking.  Sounded wicked with the odd little pop when backing off, but that disappeared when I put a resonator in there, which didn't seem to make a notable difference to the performance.

Might have the software for a different car, someone with coding software might be able to flash and reset it?

Or swap it with a DCT? lol

Hmm, DCT...i like your style...maybe next time.

I've done a few things on the coding front, including flashing the old box with the Alpina firmware. But this one sounds like it's bit more involved than that and there's very little info out there. I did reset the adaptions yesterday with INPA but that didn't help.

Anyways, today I dropped the oil pan, removed the mechatronic, swapped in the TCU from the old box and put it all back together. Still need to torque up the bolts, reinstall a couple of brackets, put the oil back in and go for a spin. But at this stage INPA is telling me the original error has gone and the exclamation mark has gone from idrive. Moment of truth tomorrow hopefully :-)

  6. Just took the 335 for it's first little drive since engine and trans install. Engine feels and sounds good but the trans isn't shifting, seems to be stuck in 3rd or 4th. I suspect it's TCM related - VIN mismatch or something along those lines. Investigating my options. The easiest might be to swap out the TCM from the old box. More work underneath the car zzz

What happened to the original engine?

I should get my 335i back tomorrow after two months at the workshop, so I can kinda imagine how you feel. I've even had dreams about it, lol.

I can't recall if we exchanged some PMs about it when we were discussing stage 1 turbos the other week, but basically the crank bolt came loose and you know what happens next... :-(  Started down the path of a rebuild before giving up on that and buying a used engine.  Replaced the gearbox at the same time, as the old one was slipping on the 4th to 5th change.  Chucked in some new turbos also.

Some of the work done in the process... valve cover gasket, oil filter gasket, oil cooler gasket, sump gasket, rear main seal, injector seals, new thermostat, new coolant hoses, new vacuum lines, millions of one time use bolts, gaskets and o-rings, new RB Turbo Inlets (much easier with the engine out!), downpipes, new transmission oil pan/filter, bolts and fresh BMW trans oil...the list goes on.

Jeez I hope this thing doesn't give me any other major headaches for a while...all other domestic and automotive projects have been on hold for too long!

As an added bonus, while bolting up the driveshaft, I discovered I have LSD :-)

Apart from a well overdue clean, got a letter from NZTA stating my 530 has been sold or disposed of and the  motor vehicle register has been updated such that I am no longer the registered person.... I mean... WTF?!?!?!

Wasn't me! Oh well, time to go see what she'll do

  9. Got the bugger in, in between the showers, the odd bit of sunshine and even a hail storm! Engine and gearbox installed together, dropped the subframe a couple of inches to pave the way, but there wasn't much space to spare, lots of maneuvering and jiggling about. Probably another weekend or two before it'll be ready to fire up...can't wait!

  10. Fuel rails installed. Fitted new rear RB inlet (now's the time to do that otherwise time consuming project). Replaced vacuum hoses feeding the wastegate solenoids and sheathed in heat shielding. Installed kittyless downpipes and fitted the oxygen sensors.

She's all ready to go in! Hoping the weather will be kind tomorrow and I can shove it all back into the car...would have started already but the AB's are playing in the neighborhood this eve, so the street's about to get real busy...that and I'm going.

The area was prepped very well with everything back to bare metal, although the weld through primer seemed to make it more difficult...

Yeah, I find "weld through" primer a pain when working on my Datsun. It's good for sealing up metal that you're never going to have access to once the patch goes in, but personally I find the surfaces that need to conduct are preferably cleaned back to bare metal. Maybe with thicker steel it would be ok as there would be more current involved.

    Cool project man...following!

  12. I'm not sure how much different the N55 is, but the N54 is definitely a noisy beast. I was running mine for a while without the engine cover, and mate, it suddenly became apparent why there is so much sound deadening in that engine cover. Mostly the direct injectors I think.

Separate tool pr0n thread is the go.  No confusion is good.

Show us your tools.  Discuss who sells the best tools.  Stories of what you did with your tools.  Who you shared your tool with.  Who broke your tool?  What happened when you went on holiday without your tool?  Have you polished your tools lately?

Please do. This thread is supposed to be more about what you used your tool for today, rather than a showing off the size of your tool schoolboy competition ;-)

I do agree with this. I bring my own parts to my mechanic on occasion. As I travel for work I stock up on filters via US suppliers when I'm there. One time I bought a Continental belt for a car of mine and they installed it for me. The bloody thing seems to have been defective from the factory and noisy. So I had to go back, pay again for labour and a new belt.

Yeah and it's becoming more and more pertinent with all the counterfeit shite out there.

Thank you... and the clientele that I work for and enjoy working for is probably not the same as the people who are commenting here. My reasons are for the first thread I posted on this subject. I don't work for labour only and I don't discount my labour, I don't fit parts supplied unless by agreement with a client, I don't get told what or how much I will charge. I choose who I do work for and what I will work on. I don't need the stress or exposure to risk and I really enjoy doing what I do using quality parts that I have control over and being able to do my work to a high standard that has a quality back up of 1.5 million dollars of public liability which I have only had to use twice since 1986. I'm also supported by by network of suppliers who guarantee their products. If I offended anyone with my blunt statement... tuff. I can take it and get insulted at least once a week by 21 year olds that tell me how to repair there pieces of sh*t , what I will charge and how to do it, which I refuse to work on anyway. I will also add that I am not insinuating that any of the people commenting on here own pieces of sh*t, I just didn't put it across appropriately in a post up there ^^^^^

    Using this scenario:

Go to your local special restaurant... take cheap cut of meat and an imported crayfish with you. Put it on the table and tell the chef how much you will pay him to cook it to the same standard you had there a month ago ? Do you think he might be slightly insulted ?

I'm only interested in dealing with people who want a quality repair done to a high standard at a reasonable price with guarantees, and my costs are always able to be negotiated... I have a phone number

Yep, fair enough, valid points. I'd probably be the same in your shoes...but different.
