  1. God, those $10 repco spray can style black rims change the whole appearance of the car.

Along with the tatty looking front lip, it looks like it should be cruising around the streets of Huntly or Flaxmere on dole day.

S/h car market is a ridiculous thing at present and despite the Covid import issues, doesn't really make any sense.

The vehicles you mention are right up there with other overpriced vehicles. I'd add a Hilux to the list! (Bl**dy horrible things to drive - what do people see in them?)

    What is your V6 wagon?

Yes, I can see why some cars may demand a premium (like the new Rav4 and Highlander Hybrids - 10 month wait time) but across the board I cannot stomach, so I'll just sit it out and see what happens.

Wagon is a W211 E320. Nice car and good value for $$$. These types of ageing and largely mediocre Euros are really the only vehicles that haven't increased in price hah.

  3. Be interesting to see the psychology behind the reactions to fuel prices... People selling their $10000 'gas guzzler' only to buy a more efficient $30k car that will take 15 years to break even on fuel costs before depreciation is factored in.

My daily V6 wagon averages 8.2l/100km, takes 70ish litres to fill and I'll get around 900km on a trip.

I usually do 700-800km/week. The increase in fuel price has seen me $40-50 out of pocket/week but I acknowledge I do more km than most. Not enough to break the bank and definitely not enough to make me loose my sh*t and sell my car in favour of a diesel or EV as a knee jerk reaction.

I've been hankering for a decent V8 - Lexus LX570, 200 Series Land Cruiser or a Ram 1500, but simply refuse to pay the inflated prices for them (3 year old LX and Ram asking prices at or near their RRP,  LC200 $20-40k more than RRP). Hopefully this increase in fuel prices hits the over inflated used car market and brings it back to what it should be.

From my limited Mercedes experience they aren't the easiest cars to sell. The older ones certainly dont appear have the fan base numbers in this country like they do in US etc.

    Not wrong.

Specific models go for good coin (pre 1990s coupes, convertibles and wagons), but nearly all sedans with the exception of W108 are hugely undervalued compared to everything else out there (except maybe XJ Jags, Silver Shadow Rolls and E32 7 series).

Last year I got $12k for this 280SE. It is in pretty good condition. I've seen Mk 5 Cortinas and 4 cylinder Holden Commodores have higher asking prices 😂

Theres a V8 one on TM now for $12k and you'd struggle to find a better entry into the classic car scene.

My V12 Coupe I sold in 2020 for $8500. I should have held onto it, an exceptional car and a bargain considering what it is. Currently one on TM for $10k.

  6. The biggest worry with having a retail outlet servicing the (Euro) car is their interpretation of what needs replacing come service time, then forwarding your boss the quote of ‘required’ work complete with NZ marked up retail parts prices.

What about Lexus - the GS V6 and V8 look ok.

If possible you should take one of those diesel C5s for a spin and see what you think - the 4 cylinder diesels will return 5L/100km on the open road. I have a pre facelift and it’s one of the best cars I’ve owned. Satisfaction everytime I drive it (last year I had a 1000km/week commute) as they excel at ride quality/comfort and fuel economy, two characteristics you’ll encounter every time you drive it.

But Christ, who worries about the 5 year resale on a $10k car that is on the books…

I had briefly considered the engine in a Jag, but dismissed due to lack of personal knowledge, and image. It's a ridiculous situation - another forum member recounted how arriving in his cheapy bought X45, or the workshop Q7 hack (combined value perhaps less than $10k) got comments of "You're doing all right", "can I expect a discount", and so on. Roll up in a near-new Land Cruiser 90-series at $130k+ and no-one bats an eyelid.

The Citroen I'd not considered. Yes, the wagon would be great!
    How good is the engine/gearbox?

I  haven't driven one, but at 180kw and 450nm I imagine it would make a decent highway cruiser.

As for reliability, not too sure, might have to do a search if genuinely interested. I think the Peugeot 407 has the same drivetrain.

Have seen several Disco 3 & 4 on TM with the same engine with snapped crankshafts. I stumbled on a YouTube vid of a mechanic in the UK who has some exposure with them.

It comes down to looking after the environment, no surprises then that they are dropping the oil dripping coolant swallowing seal munching V12s.

If that is the reason for dropping it then BMW may as well drop all of their ICE engines 😉

Thus i suggest abandoning Auckland and Wellington for other more sustainable cities.

With the exception of maybe Invercargill, there are no sustainable cities.

Even a 4 bed in Te Kuiti or Tokoroa you'll struggle to pick up something for under $400k.

Those who push the working from home angle, if you can do it, then there is a possibility someone in India can at a fraction of your pay check.

  10. Cummins are in the process of developing hydrogen combustion for their on highway engines.

    https://powertorque.com.au/cummins-is-developing-hydrogen-combustion-x15/?utm_campaign=60e4aa0b54d1a90001c2282d&utm_content=61b2059a9e12820001c55990&utm_medium=smarpshare&utm_source=linkedin&fbclid=IwAR3npbKTa7iCkEjzf32ZGCu3JHtgw7vnWP6X12ac-Bg35sQMgFka4vmoIQU#mobile-site-navigation

Interestingly, Isuzu and Hino will be using Cummins to supply their small and medium size diesel truck engines from 4.5 to 9 litres. They're both directing R and D into BEV technology and they don't see progressing their existing engine platforms to meet Euro 6 as viable.

A huge gamble on their part and Cummins could be the real winner out of this, especially if their hydrogen combustion tech and infrastructure takes hold.

As for the OP, you have an F20, worth at least $20k?

What sort of change over figure will you be looking at for an EV, at least another $20k...

How much gas is that going to buy, factoring in depreciation the unknown future RUC rates...

I always worry that at some point there will be a “smog test” as part of a WOF and you’ll get picked up for that - I guess you could always remap it to stock. I also feel that the logic is like saying if others dump a trailer of rubbish on the side of the road, I can throw a hamburger wrapper out there - I guess it’s how you feel about it.

Really though, if you want a fast diesel I would just go for the 330D, that thing is a great driver's car.

Taking a moral high ground on someone who deletes their car of adblue or DPF or remaps for performance is champagne socialist levels of hypocrisy especially if one owns multiple vehicles, old car pre emissions vehicles, (or a race car lmao), uses their car for anything more than essential travel, travels by plane for leisure etc.

Besides, who ever complains about DPF removal is oblivious to what happens when they re gen. All that matter trapped is burnt out of the exhaust.

I dont need anything to back up an opinion but I do have a rational; that the $10k+ and 20k+ for the older M30 block in the E34 is overpriced. Sure, 3 to 10k maybe fine, have at it. I've had the M30 and have had the M60 and the M50 (and soon an M54) in the E28 and many, many E34s. I grew up with E34s in my family. The M60 is simply a beautiful engine, in power delivery, smoothness (even though its a V8) and sounds good too. The M50 is just a nice overall engine, a huge quality of living increase over the really old M30.

The 535i "shitting all over the M50" (I never mentioned the M20, equally archaic, not sure why you mention it? ) I presume you mean in terms of torque and power? Yeah, sure, but in practice the lightness and comparative freshness of the M50 in a 525i is nicely matched in the E34. Its a more modern engine for a more modern BMW.  But I don't really care, I'm not a major fan of the M50, its just a sweet spot overall. A well setup M50 e34 is a nice handling, driving car.  The M30 is fine, but I've never been enamoured with it.

I think the peak E34 is the 540i and I think the M30 has a lot of respect/fan service but IMO is overrated. I also think most of the 540's here have been ruined by idiots but that's beside the point, in stock form it was excellent. I don't think the M30 535i is bad, I just dont think it compares that well to the V8 for similar prices.

Being "designed in the same decade" doesnt really make cars similar, at all. Have you driven an E28? I have one, but christ its basic. The E34 is nothing at all like that.   I also don't think the statement is even correct, given the E34 was developed from '81 and launched in '88.. the E28 is a 70's design (with a mild refresh in the early 80s, kinda) with similar'ish suspension but inferior and older.. so Im not really sure what you are on about there.

How many E34 535iS have come to market in the past 24 months for you to form that opinion?

Bare in mind the price gains all enthusiast cars have seen in the past 18 months.

The rooted red one in Wgtn for $6.5k and the immaculate black one in Wgtn for ~25k?
Both a bargain compared to this E28, any E24 or any E30.

The M50 is still a slow torqueless gutless thirsty slug when it has to move 1700kg + of E34 around NZs hilly terrain and no amount of on paper ‘tech’ is gonna change that.

All things equal I’d take a 540iA/iS over the M30 equivalent but the M30 does have more character especially in iS spec.

I’m going to list my average - above average condition 535iS for $12.5k in the first quarter of next year. Good buying considering auto E30 320 and ghetto E36 6 cylinders are going for the same price.

The E34 is not at all like an E28!? The E28 feels way older, way lighter and way rougher, ie, it feels like a classic. The E34 just feels like an older "modern" car. Also the E34 535is is grossly overpriced (at least in NZ), so its not a good value for money proposition anyhow. The E34 525i and 540i were probably the peak E34's, aside from M5's (but even still, 540i vs older tech M5.. hmm).

Do you have anything solid to back up your claim E34 535iS are grossly over priced?

Say, prices of previous sales, sale or asking prices compared to other models in the BMW line up of the era, or alternative models to the 535iS?

And sorry, but the 535i shits all over any 525i, M20 or M50.

    Thanks all.

I was hoping to find some software that has the ability to adjust smoke limit, fuel pressure, injection time, injection mass, boost pressure etc. I feel I'm just missing a few key words in my Google searches to find what I'm looking for.

Before anyone gets worried, I am aware of the risks associated with this.

I do appreciate all the plan b options for getting someone else to tune it.

Hadn't looked into galletto so will have a look.

    Have you discovered MHH auto?

There is a sign up fee to join, $20 US a few years ago.

I did mainly for heavy diesel but light vehicle diagnosis and tuning info is on there.

There might be someone on there with a tune they can send you if you have the right software and tooling.

I hate buying cars in NZ.

My attempt today has gone totally ignored.  I'm short on time and the guy is not answering any of the means of contact he posted.

Don't worry, you aren't the only one.

Also had the same issue with the red 540iS in Auckland around 6 months ago.

How much are you willing to spend, I'm probably going to put mine up for sale next week.

As for the thread topic, does it piss anyone else off that nearly every second BMW listed on trademe comes up as 'manual'?  Seems to happen more with the 3 series.

Yup I know who the owner is! He is only selling as he managed to score an amazing deal on a 540i/6 recently and now has 3 e34 540s. Are you part of the E34 Enthusiasts NZ Facebook Page? Personally I would go for the 540 seeing as they are both automatics.

    Was the 540i6 publicly listed?

Am only aware of two that have sold in the past year - the techno violet one in Auckland and the neglected hellrot red one a few months ago?

  17. Warren and Brown have a good name and nice products.

I run a digital Snap on 3/8" which goes from 5 - 140nm which is versatile and handy but not cheap at around $800 from memory.

Also have a Cat micrometer action 3/8 and 1/2'' which were around $350aud each. 1/2" has good range 40-300nm and long handle.

The Cat wrenches are old Snap On gear.

Warren and Brown look to be identical to my Cat gear.

Am in the trade and use them nearly everyday. Have owned the Cat stuff for around 7 years with no drama.
