  1. Hey its interesting reading my original post and still never bothered to post pics. After owning for a while here are my thoughts.

For city and motorway driving its fantastic. Very comfortable and fast.

But you need to decide if you are a turbo kind of guy or not. Ive found that im not i prefer a high revving NA car. So im mulling over selling for something else. I hate turbo lag and when boost kicks in it throws you back and you get an awesome rush. Thats cool at traffic lights and on the motorway but in the twisties makes the car less controlled imo. After boosting you have to slam on the brakes to slow down and the car doesnt like high revving. It runs out of breath after 5K rpm.

I got BMW performance suspension shocks and kept the M-sport springs. Got them for cheap from E90post forum member. If i keep the car i might get Eicbach shocks.

I got the MHD tune which is very good and lot cheaper than JB4 and better since its a flash and not piggyback. Im running St 1 FMIC map which targets 18psi (stock is 8). Turns the car into a beast. If you get MHD buy it on a separate device/google account so you can sell it with the car.

At 100K+ kms the shocks will probably be shot. Also replace the front suspension bits with M3 arms and rods will make a nice difference. Not huge though. But tighter steering feel. By all accounts the best mod is the rear subframe bushings. Car is squishy in the rear under acceleration and can wander a bit if going at speed in a corner. I find that quite unsettling. If i keep the car will do this at some point. Get poly bushings like powerflex which you can get in without specials tools. Hacksaw and blowtorch will get the stock ones out :)

Car burns oil. I have to top up a litre about every 3 - 4k kms. And will leak oil. Oil filter gasket, valve cover and oil pan will probably need doing at some point past 100k kms.

HPFP should not be an issue for NZ and Jap cars. Seems only an issue for US cars because of crap fuel. And my waterpump still okay at 140k kms.

Intake cleaning you can diy which i recommend. Walnut blasting can clog the ports in the valve cover. Safer to soak the intake valves with a cleaner and scrub them clean/wipe up. Its a messy job but safer imo.

If you like modding then get N54 engine. And M-sport. High mileage i dont think is a problem for these cars the engines are reliable. Only thing is the turbos (ignoring oil leaks, shocks, bushings). And if you are going to up the boost then you are shortening the life of them anyway.

So depends on what you like. The 335i is the new supra and at some point 1000Hp will probably be reached with a single turbo conversion. New turbos are coming on the market in the states from pure and hexon. Hopefully there will be RHD options as well.

  2.

Am assuming no OCC was installed after the clean?

I really should open mine again to see how it looks since the clean and the OCC was installed - have put around 40K+ since the initial clean

Nope no occ. An occ is not gong to do anything to keep carbon build up on the valves it just helps keep oil out of the ic and charge air passageway. Carbon is a side effect of exhaust gases. Only way to stop this is to port the valve cover.

Apparently rob beck in the us is coming up with a kit to do this. Otherwise you can diy it there is s guy on e90post done it but he's crazy is so ott lol

  3. Sounds like the previous walnut job was not done correctly - there should be no remnants left what so ever if done correctly....

Would love to see pics of the intakes via the wirebrush method

No arguments from me there should be no remnants leftover. When i opened it up it was only about 20k kms since the walnut blast and it was pretty black and mucky in there. I didnt take good pics as I was in a hurry to get it done that day and plan to open it up again and do a more thorough job. But here you go have a look how black it is in there!

  4. Vacuum lines, leaking diverter valves and low pressure fuel sensor. These problems only showed after added a tune. If you are handy with a wrench then the only thing you need to worry about is the turbos and even they can be replaced on a pair of jackstands in your driveway.

DIY on these cars is recommended as the parts are not really expensive its the labour that gets you. For example I had a leaking gasket in the oil filter housing. The gasket is $10. But to get the OFH off you need to drain the coolant. To drain coolant you need to remove the intercooler. Then just for a laugh BMW engineers decided to place one of the OFH bolts behind the intake manifold. So off comes the manifold. Thats a good time to pour some ISO alcohol in the intake valves and scrub them clean.

FYI i would avoid doing the walnut blasting. Previous owner did it on my 335 and there are left over remnants all over the engine. And anecdotally the shells can end up plugging the ports in the valve cover. So save some money and DIY with a wire brush, rags and ISO alcohol.

  5. The worst part about the proposed GST changes is not the paying of GST but the part in there which has a fine of up to $30K for using an offshore streaming service like the US Apple TV store or US Netflix... they don't even give you the option of filing a return and paying your tax, just shut down the content. What next?! Banning all offshore goods except those who have import licences, we all know how that movie ends.

We could re-enact the 70s and 80s where anyone who didnt have a job worked for the railways everyone was content and unicorns were in abundance.

  6. Gotta say he is pretty dismissive about the cost. Because its not his money. Typically a business would not go about designing a product before doing market research on whether there is demand for it. Careful analysis and surveys would be performed before even coming up with prototypes. But this doesnt apply to govt and they dont need to be careful about how they spend money. Because its not their money.

I wonder if he would still do it if he had to refund the $26m if the referendum result is for "no change". Key is so convinced kiwis want a change then he should put his money where his mouth is.

Anyway sorry for the OT and rant :)

  7. Agree. They will quickly find it costs way too much to chase the money.

Customs will not want to do this for free. Delays and fees will cause much grief.

I doubt they will care one bit about the cost of collection. Remember its not their money they are spending its taxpayers money. I doubt they really give a toss about cost v benefit of use of our money. Customs themselves, from a bureaucratic perspective would love this change to happen. Its means they can get a bigger budget, hire more staff, become more important etc to hell with what it costs the taxpayer.

John Key is perfectly comfortable spending $26m to convince us to change the flag before even bothering to ask us if we want to. Because it not his money he is spending our money.

This is more about pressure from the retail sector which leads to the trotting out of excuses like "we have to do what Australia does".

  8. Buy A cobb v3

I have the MHD app which also has myriad of gauges to choose from (and is better than cobb for tune flashing). But I prefer to not have dangling cords and phone mount. And phone/cobb do not charge from the OBD port.

Sure i could go about trying to build one. But to have it look like an OEM feature? No. These units replace the vent mount entirely.

  9. Update - shipping for 5 displays is EUR 68 and for 15 displays EUR 92.

Looks like these gauges are not compatible with JB4. I think its because the gauge is controlled via steering wheel buttons which the JB4 hijacks.

M5V8 - yes you lose an AC vent but the air flow volume should remain the same - instead of air vented through 2 ducts just goes through a single duct.

  10. Hey guys

Gauging interest for a group buy for an Awron gauge. I have been in touch with them and they are willing to do a 25% discount for 5 gauges or 30% for 15 gauges.

The standard price for an E9x are EUR 587 plus 2% paypal fee. Shipping for one unit is EUR 35. Not sure how much for a bunch of them. So excluding shipping a 25% discount would be EUR 449 which at current fx rates is around NZD 746. Not cheap i know but the gauge is pure sex. And would hold a good resale value.

Check on the website whether your car model is supported - http://www.awron-shop.de/awron-performance-display-systems

Edit: shipping for 5 displays is EUR 68 and for 15 displays EUR 92.

So 5 displays at 25% discount will come to EUR 462 each approx $772 and 30% discount EUR 425 or $710.

Edit 2: Forgot to add there will probably be customs and gst to pay on this.
