Hey .. after reading wils stuf please ignore my other thread.. the oil pump must run off dissy. But my opinion is that the key depending on size should be fine sitting in the sump provided it has fallen down into the sump. the noise will be the cams getting dry . so stop running it. items can sit in the sump for ever and have a slim chance of getting picked up into an oil tunnel again. it may even come out after an oil change if it is small enough. if you have one of those magnet things with the extendible arials that look like a car arial but with a magnet on the end,,,,it may well be able to pick it up through the same hole it fell in through. I would just buy another key somewhere and get it fitted by that mechanic up there. im in palmy so bit far away to help, good luck

Hi there. have you sorted out the timeing belt issues?. I am a qualified mech and will type this out to see if it helps. it is just the basic stuff for a timing belt.and applys to all cars. The timing is 1342 for a 4 cylinder , get some thing to turn your crank while you have a long thin screw driver in the spark plug hole number one.thats the plug at the front of the engine. when the piston moves up to the highest point , and should line up with a mark on the crank shaft pulley. then it is at Top dead centre . this happens twice each cycle so make sure your distributor is pointing to lead number one to check it is at the firing top dead centre. check that the cam shaft marks line up at that point. you can double check this by taking the rocker cover off and checking that both the inlet and exhaust cam lobs are pointing away from the valve stems. Ie,, not opening valves at all. then all the marks should line up. they should line up again with each two complete revolutions of the crank. and each two complete turns should line up the cam marks and the distributor with spark lead running to number one cylinder. figure out which way the distributor turns when you crank the engine and then make sure the leads run to cylinders 1 then 3 then 4 then 2. the crank angle sensor should not stop the car starting and running. it is there to aid timing and avoid pre ignition. pinking. hope this helps. Rick

THANKS CHAPS Brent ill get back to you ..Aucklands a long way for a thing that weighs that much but ill ring ya.. GUS : Whats the deal with the injection if i score a 2.5 litre.. do i need to change my ECU/ Air flow meter or does it just adjust it self as the engines sucking more air for the bigger cylinders. i think id rather get a wreaked complete 525/535 so i dont end up paying heaps for small components after the transplant. Thanks guys Great help. :thumb:

Any one of you gurus know if a 320 engine is the same as the 520. ive got a 520ia 1989 and need another engine to fit. only replies that know for sure please.

THANKS for the tips GUS....... but ive gone through all the basics like striping down the throttle body and removing and cleaning the ICV..im a hugh fan of Carb Cleaner. could sit and sniff it all day... Idles real low and cant seem to lift the idle. TPS im not keen on touching as its still got the paint on it and hasnt been moved since new. If the 2.5 are not much better it's looking like V8 time. that sort of horse power cant be achieved with inline engines and im not going diesel. :gay: no offence to the diesel heads ,,saw a guy in the super cheap carpark doing serious dounuts in his mum and dads diesel hilux the other week..RESPECT!

 Ok . So im as wrapped as with me first BMW, then i realise that it wasnt just a bit soft in its old age,,, but it consistantly was not starting proper when cold. And i mean NOT!! crank and crank and get jump battery on to it and crank some more and finally it comes to life. done all the obvious things. and it starts first flick of the key when hot. its a NZ new 520i 1989. 260,000 kms 6 cylinder multipoint injection, no cold start injector. when its running its a pleasure to drive but gutless as. Idles like a dog. from looking on the internet it appears i may have the Nikasil Engine and the associated problems. Any suggestions other than transplanting a small block Chev,,,which is becoming more then just a whime. Any one tell me how difficult this transplant may be or if it will even fit?. Any one got a non NIKASIL engine that they want to sell. cheers.

Cam, your not far from the mark infact some what right on it, but you need to come for a cruise one day and see what i focus on. I am and will always be a petrol head, but for some reason age has stopped me acculating tickets. I would be the first to admit that the majority of crashes around town are not young fellas or boy racers. but the old biddy poping up town for her subscription being the first time she has used her 320i that fortnight, is a lot less likely to get snaped for bad driving than the young fela who drives around all evening and chews through two tanks of gas on a weekend. the oldy gets her ticket and says nothing to no one, out of embarrasment . the boy racer gets his ticket and tells the story a hundred times in a more exciting way each time and by the time you hear it he's forgotten to include that the cop let him off the Wof and bald tyre and let him have the 62 km/h fine. i see the tickets. the boy racer and the 62 km/h driver is the minority. these smilies Rock! :mosh:

:banghead: :banghead: :banghead: After much thought i decided this (banging its head against a wall)icon would best descibe the poor cops in south Auckland that have to deal with the evil Bmw. One would not have to put much effort into his driving to aviod a ticket for the same offence in the same short while. But dont let that worry you,, just post a grissle on the Forum and bag cops in general .But whatever you do dont change lanes safely cause that would be learning from your mistakes. I will make sure next time i am driving my pride and joy Bimmer in Takanini that i look out for evil BMW and pray that my insurance doesn't Right Off my lovely old 5 series, when it gets side swiped by some chap who has still not learned to indicate properly. As soon as i moved out of Auckland my insurance premiums halfed. but that would not have anything to do with the number of cars righten off by the likes of evil bmw or the shear volume of vehicle crashes. that would be the Police's fault ,,,right.cause they are too busy focusing on traffic inforcement. "Na" I would post a photo of what happens when some one doesnt indicate and the person that hit them hadnt straped there kid in proper but i dont think evil bmw could handle it.

thanks for the info about the ratio graph, and i think your right, the pick up is stuffed. but i think ill just go for the standard ratio for that model/year or get this one fixed. all a learning curve

i can 100% say that palmy and fielding have no under cover cars designated for traffic use with a taxi light on it. infact nothing but stock holdens and a maxima. :banghead: if only i could get them to give me a bimmer.

Can the Diff Gurus tell me what on earth is going on with my Diff. I purchased a 1989 nz new 520i, lovely car but i straight away noticed noise from the rear. ive pulled out the Diff and sure enough its noisy, maybe a pinion shaft bearing. heres the catch. The tag says 4/45. This is not a Diff that comes standard and some ones thrown it in. The other point is that my speedo is way out. 130km/h at 2700 revs but only feels like 100km/h . this diff only came out in a 318At i think, From looking on the net the 4/45 is a bit rare and might be worth something. either way i just want a quiet diff and a correct speedo for the wife.
